While I think this message would have been more effective had it been Apolitical it’s an important one none-the-less.

Capitol Hill has a laundry list of offensive disclosures and most times Washington ethics are no better than Hollywood’s. One is after votes and the other after ratings, both are in it for money and power.

It’s important to the Editors of  SOFREP that we remain centered politically. So you decide who’s accountable and share your thoughts, healthy debate and open minds are good things in this world.

An exclusive interview with the group behind the video is coming so stay tuned…

@M4GRUNT That means absolutely zero. If I posted Glenn Beck's website on here or Rush Limbaugh's homepage what would that prove? You've pissed off a lot of good people on here (who make solid daily contributions) who've been here since day one and before that at Kit Up. It's not your point of view mind you, differences are always welcome but it is the fact that you cannot disagree with even a modicum of humility. I respect you for your service in the defense of our and therefore me and my family BUT do not mistakenly believe that this behavior is going to be tolerated. Wanna have discourse? I'm all for it! :-) Wanna play "Whack-a-Mole"? Go the arcade and fk off.

Discuss what's right and what's wrong, problem solve, show our unity and support for our armed forces. Young bucks should know better than to sound off against their seniors like that. With a call sign like RVN SF VET, I'm going to imagine that he knows exactly what he's talking about and while that doesn't mean us guys have to agree with it( which I did agree with RVN SF VET) we do have to afford the courtesy of disagreeing respectfully. Just like when, on the rare occasion I disagree with you. You and the other vets here should always have the last word.  @M4GRUNT Don't you think you are going over the line here. I just read a note saying that I get my stuff from LSM which meant nothing to me until now. Now I'm referred to as a sheep. Baaah, humbug. I guess you have suggested where you get your stuff from. although I disagree with the editorial policy of both papers (especially on the 2bd Amendment) I have found that combing their content with books and "throwoffs" gives a guy a pretty decent handle on what's going on. When I started in government work in 1961, I was surprised to find a New York Times story stamped SECRET. Well, that sounded silly so I asked and it was explained to me that it agreed with our best intel and put some of our stuff in context. Like all sources, you have to read with some skepticism and compare it to other sources. You know, all source means all sources. I guess that even includes FOX and Rush. {;*))

Then you've got your experience and training. If you look at a wide spectrum of media sources, you often end up with a picture of events that is close to or better than classified info. What I have found iffy is the governments version of events in Iraq and Afghanistan. That's where some embed reporting can make a big difference. Even YouTube is a source of information on Afghanistan if you know what to look for. I'm retired now so I have more time to read a lot and I'm doing OK except for confounded changes in military acronyms.

As tempting as it is, I recommend trying hard not to attack or characterize the person making the comment - it's not nice blog/forum behavior. And yes, I'm criticizing you because I feel you've done it yourself 3 times on this topic. You have strong views about people and some of them are not flattering to you.

@JuliaHugoRachel Well, MAJ Jim Grimshaw is a great guy with a solid military background. I just happened to respectfully disagree that any of these folks have cited any Administration leaks. No one seems to know who compromised the doctor or if ISI figured it out. It was pretty easy to figure out. I don't know who divulged the Saudi agent as the first story was from overseas. But Jim is right, it damaged our relations with Allied intel agencies.

However, the first guy, the AF Colonel is a big fat liar. Revealing TOP SECRET war plans? What a crock!Who are we going to war with next? I want to know. And if you think he is referring to Afghanistan, I don't think anything fits that description since we are already there and getting out (mostly.)

It's the same old deal. Either cite something specific or shut the hell up. Please note that MAJ Grimshaw made two specific references - that's what I'm talking about.

JuliaHugoRachel
JuliaHugoRachel 5pts

@RVN SF VET I see your point. Some of the leaks did harm folks and families and that information is classified and will not come out for decades (as I mentioned in a previous post here). As for mentioning specific points, remember, the American {Public will just believe what they hear in this Video. They will see "titles and agency names" and assume it as the Gospel. ( as you mentioned in a previous comment). This is the world of media and propaganda. As far as "cite something or shut the hell up", were you referring to me or the video? Just wondering:-)  I missed all the action. It looks as if folks hope you don't walk away from SOFREP. Me included.

@rozhbash @Matt2 May I add that Peter Bergin can not be considered an "Objective" Voice in this discussion because he is an "interested party". Peter is motivated by the sales of his books, which center on full disclosure and classified details on OBL as well as The Raids. I think, at this point, we need to look at facts only. Take away the politics (although they are intertwined) and look at the Leaks, risk assessment potential blowback. Were the leaks harmful (this is classified-we may never fully know), since they are ongoing (as never seen before in any administration-can somebody verify/confirm that?) and do we need to stop them now? If so, How? The video might be the plug. With the amount of attention and uproar surrounding this video, a nerve in DC has been hit.

@JuliaHugoRachel  @rozhbash  @Matt2 The video will have no impact on Washington leaks. As for what Administration had the most leaks, that's easy. It was the Johnson and Nixon Presidencies during the Vietnam War. Have we forgotten that already? Under President Kennedy and Eisenhower we had the leak of the Cuban invasion preparations. Those were leaks in advance of an operation. The Navy made a serious error which costs lives and made POWs. The Navy got confused as to the time in Hanoi and Haiphong and gave that wrong time to President Johnson. So, President Johnson announced our Gulf of Tonkin retaliation raid BEFORE the planes launched. The Russians flashed that info to the North and they were ready and waiting for our fliers. That is an excellent example of an OPSEC lapse.

Julia, you refer to the many leaks that this administration has either made or permitted to be made, Since there are so many, [;ease give us several examples that concern you. You cannot use STUXNET as that was not a US leak. However, after that Iranian scientist brought his laptop home, we discovered that the Israelis has added a "feature" to the software that caused it to propagate. They never told us they had done that. That was an Israeli OPSEC lapse.

JuliaHugoRachel
JuliaHugoRachel 5pts

@RVN SF VET  @rozhbash  @Matt2 Perhaps you are correct, " The video will have no impact on Washington leaks" However, perhaps legal challenges will aid this video to have an affect in preventing leaks in the future. WE know what happened to Kennedy and Johnson and Nixon. Knowing that, Leaks such as this can be monumental as far as public opinion and national security as blowback. Sir, I keep asking the question which I feel is a good one to ask and I would like your opinion. The men that produced and spoke in this video (no matter what their polilitical affiliation) - A) did not endorse Romneys' camp  B) Expected to have their reputations torn apart and a public backlash thrown at them (anyone that has been through public backlash,  it is rough) and C)Hostorically,  Romney has les than a 33% chance of beating an incumbent .

So why make this Video knowing all of the above facts?  With classified reports on collateral damage being sealed for decades about the potential blowback of these leaks, why not keep their mouths zipped? Perhaps more DEVGRU, SEAL, CAG and Intelligence operators support this video and the folks in it were the mouthpiece. Perhaps this was just a request "to stop the leaks". Just a theory. But I'd like to hear you opinion. Thank You.

I hate to even look that direction. Makes me sick. Bad guys may not have gotten lucky on 8/6. I dropped to my knees and puked that day. Intelligence reports 8-10 weeks prior to that showed risk. They did not get to where they needed to get.

@RVN SF VET I respect you and your knowledge and factual accounting. However, the investigation will be ongoing  at a top secret level. The leaks of most concern are within our military and the chance of that particular helo getting hit with those particular men is very coincidental. There will be a top classified investigation ongoing in this matter. That was where my remark was coming from. Enough said, whatever the situation, it will be hanmdled. In the end, whatever that report many say, it may have been blowback from the leak out of our government. That remains to be seen. I was pointing out the tentacles of the leak. That one has not been ruled out as of yet. The reports you speak of are public knowledge. Behind those reports, per normal protocol, many times, are classified investigations and reports.

@JuliaHugoRachel1 The investigation says it was just an ambush by clever Taliban/foreign fighters. IMHO, it was facilitated by a bad tactical plan. The investigation says that I'm wrong. Helicopters are not invulnerable - they've got to remember that. Leaks in the Afghan environment were the least of our worries as long as we kept the target from the Afghans. Now that we are giving them more control, we will have no control of OPSEC. The death of the 3 Marines in the gym is an example of the OPSEC SOP being ignored.

All is forgotten. People stick up for themselves and move on. Tough skins. Ny point, you may be talking to someone in Intelligence, law, politics, COIN, SF, etc. You never know on here....

On your question to me. I amreferring to the leaks in the Video, and all leaks known of since Commander in Chief has been in office. There are probably other leaks that are not public information. I am not in the Leak business, but I take note when so many have occurred in the past 4 years.

On the Nixon Leaks, men took the fall for those. They spent time in prison in order "to take one for the team". i.e. Frank Sturgis. May I ask, who takes one for the team with the DEVGRU leaks? The team or their families? Was the 8/6/11 heo crash (ambush?) connected  with the leaks? We don't know how far this leak ripples.

@JuliaHugoRachel  @Matt2  This is getting to be hysterical.

"The video, produced by a group called the Special Operations OPSEC Education Fund, features interviews with former military and intelligence personnel who say Obama “had nothing to do” with the successful May 2011 raid on bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The video also accuses Obama’s administration with leaking classified information to the press for political gain."

OK, which is it? Is he the Commander in Chief or not? Good heavens, if the mission had failed, whose fault would that have been? Why, let's ask Mitt Romney, he's an authority on Executive powers and the chain-of-command isn't he? He's also an authority on OPSEC as Massachusetts secrets have never leaked!

How stupid can the propagandists be? Our military crossed an international border 3 times and killed an enemy of the US without permission of the country they entered. Well, let's see, who has that authority? Could it be Admiral McRaven, or the CENTCOM commander or the Secretary of Defense? Could it be the Director of the CIA - why heck yes he can do whatever he wants! Who decides if the helicopters with the QRF can clandestinely land uninvited in another country in support of the raid? Well, just about anybody I guess. Who can authorize the CIA to take command of a military joint activity and direct their operation cutting out the JCS, CENTCOM, ISAF, AND SOCOM? Well hell, Secretary Gates and Director Panetta had dinner together and shook on it without bothering the socialist, commie President. No sweat.

Frankly, there are tons of citizens who will swallow this crap because they are ignorant. If you think I'm being unkind, just watch Jay Leno when he goes out on the street and asks passersby simple questions about our government or current events. They don't know jack or even Bob.

I doubt that the President made the one or two tactical decisions that were attributed to him, but it's certainly possible because those decisions could have been informed by a desire to guarantee the return of the raiders as opposed to some military understanding of the problem. But, there is only one person who can authorize what was done - the President. Technically, what we did could be construed as an act of war.The likelihood that UBL was there was around 50/50 or less.So he had to decide whether it was worth the risk to the men, the country, and to his Presidency (see Jimmy Carter) to go ahead with an even chance that the bastard was there?

But according to these public spirited highly qualified SOF experts, he had nothing to do with it! How did those noble, brave, objective, patriotic citizens come to their conclusion? Easy - they are Republican politicians unafraid to lie to achieve political gain in the run down to the election. Shazaam! They are liars because most of them do know how these decisions are made and they do understand the chain of command. So, they are informed liars. There is no other explanation when you assert that the President has "nothing to do" with the raid or the success of the raid.

What is true is that there are people who having been tirelessly hunting UBL for 10 years since TORA BORA. That is something the President did not set up, but he did keep the emphasis on finding him. I doubt that anyone opposed funding their operation. President Obama invited President Bush to come to Washington and share the podium to announce that we got UBL. President Bush declined and has made a point of staying out of the spotlight for the last 4 years. That is what he prefers.  But the impetus for the hunt began wirth President Bush whom we referred to as "the decider."

Well, guess who the decider is now?

@Matt2 "They support the video", thats good. I liked that what they said more, about presenting a "posture" for the Nation, that was good. That shows integrity and moral.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
