Eric Boehlert

Eric Boehlert is an American writer at Media Matters for America. Prior to this he was a senior writer for Salon for five years, and before that a contributing editor to Rolling Stone. At Salon Boehlert won the 2002 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers‘ Deems Taylor Award for music journalism, for a series of articles in 2001 on the radio industry. The series was also shortlisted for the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.

What Eric is Clearly Not

  • A military veteran
  • Someone who has worked in the Intelligence community
  • A person who has likely never held a classified security clearance
  • An expert on National Security, Military or Intelligence Issues

Gutless or Courage?

Anyone can see that the video clearly goes after the Obama administration Eric. Calling the men who made the video gutless is a long shot, especially for someone who has never served their country in any capacity.  I doubt you would have said this to the faces of these men and that makes you the coward. Lurking behind your computer lobbing rocks on Twitter doesn’t cut it in my book.

I personally believe that there’s plenty of blame to go around Washington and it’s on both sides of the political fence.  Some Washington politicians (Democrats and Republicans) are playing a dangerous game of political chess, where the U.S. Warfighter has become the pawn, and National Security at risk is the end game.

And what about holding the U.S. media accountable? Who are the media groups that are throwing up the TMZ headlines like gossip girls and giving no consideration or regard for U.S. National Security?  I guess a breaking headline and ratings are more important these days. Reminds me of my favorite Don Henley song “Dirty Laundry“.   Shame on the usual suspects.

The important point that the OPSEC video makes, is that it clearly displays the problem of politicians leaking national security Intel and its consequences, straight from the experts mouths. These men are patriots and put their own identities on the line and at risk to make a powerful point. They are Patriots who are exercising First Amendment Rights, just like you did when you made pushed “Tweet”.

Conclusion

Politicians need to shut the fuck up. There are consequences to the game you are playing and people that know the seriousness of it are banding together to raise awareness. I suspect both parties have blood on their hands where leaks are concerned.

It’s hard to censor the power of the Internet. China keeps trying unsuccessfully and our own government tried to limit our First Amendment rights with SOPA.

SOPA-SOFREP

Freedom of speech and the Internet is a wonderful thing these days. It can be a powerful way to organize and communicate a message.  Dishonorable Disclosures: A million views and counting…

If you agree hit “like” and share.

NOTHING that anyone from Media Matters writes/posts/publicizes should be taken seriously.  They are uber-far-Left partisans.  A little background research will explain why and how.

@BrandonTWebb Maybe Boehlert should go on the new TV show with Chris Kyle as his partner. Bet Chris could make him crap his pants.

The more I see of this Imbecile's (Eric Boehlert) comments and read about more comments that he keeps making on twitter to try to defend himself and divert blame, something comes to mind.  When I have to deal with people that have done something wrong or purposely said something wrong and are caught red handed the first thing they do is get defensive and then they become arrogantly loud and right up in your face.  They seem to think this makes them seem innocent when all it really does is make their guilt more glaringly obvious.  Sad, sad little neanderthal, what a gutless wonder.

I recently reviewed some research that said that when caught cheating by a spouse, 90% of all men and 80% of all womens first reactions is, "Your CRAZY!!!".

I think Boehlert's reaction falls into the same human reaction category. He was caught saying something he thought was cute and would be accepted and didn't expect the backlash he got. His reaciton was to effectly say, "Your CRAZY! I didn't mean they had no guts when I said the didn't have the guts, I ment something else."

I would like to think someone in his position would be more articulate than he is so that he wouldn't be misunderstood.

@IrritableGruntSyndrome Yes, I believe in some cases your correct but in many cases they realize it they just don't care.  I believe with media like this their motto is "As long as I look good and my ratings are good who cares if I put others at risk".  I do have friends in the media that are responsible journalists and reporters.  They have common sense and know what and when to report and more importantly what NOT to report.  Unfortunately the bad ones over shadow the good ones.

Beohlert is twittering about how he is being misquoted(where have we heard that before?). Apparently Beohlert saying someone doesn't have the "guts" to admit something he thinks they should admit doesn't mean he thinks they are "gutless." It would seem that "guts" exist in many subtle shades and layers to him. There are the guts to face bullets, bombs and violent death and then there is the absense of "guts" to admit your a Republican? There must be some kind of parallel universe for guts in which one can have the guts and not have the guts at the same time. Presumably one is gutless and gutsy simultaneously as well? Now he's saying that he has "nothing but respect for ALL Navy SEALs and those who serve this country. To imply otherwise is irresponsible." So all the veterans here who are calling him out on this shit are "irresponsible?" Afterall, we're doing much more than just implying it here at SOFREP. Next he'll be telling us he has "nothing but respect for ALL veterans who have served with country and that to imply otherwise is reckless." What you won't hear him do is say he's sorry, that he is a paid shill himself for the Democrat Party and that he's scared to death he will run into a SEAL at an Obama fundraiser(not likely). That's because all his friends are telling him him how much "guts" he has to play 'Poke the Tiger' with the SEALs. I'll bet he's sleeping with the light on with a rape whistle around his neck though, you never know what might be hiding in the closet..

@SEAN SPOONTS I guess none of us are as smart as Eric, but one would think that the absence of "guts" would be "gutless".  Love how these dufus' resort to semantics and context when they get called out.

EB's comments really got to me (in a very bad way) when I read them on Firday. I commented on them angry Friday night but I've had the weekend to cool down and reflect again. I did not serve my country in the military and wouldn't have a clue what it would mean to even think about making the committment to just request BUD/S. That being said I can't possibly believe anyone could accuse anyone who has served our country of not having "Guts". He is slow and if you gave him a needle and thread he'd sew his head to the carpet!

Brandon... this guy will never face you on Andrew Wilkrow  or anywhere else. He's a coward.

 Matt.... I completely disagree!

His quote: "Navy SEALs dont have guts to admitt they're running a GOP, anti-Obama campaign"

1) not "having guts" should never be used to describe any actions of our SEALs ex, current or future. These are men that have fought and died in outstanding fashion for the United States of America. Not just for the GOP... the Liberals.. the rich...the poor... The whole dang USA!!!!!

2) SEALs are extreamly strong, intellegent and determined individuals and I'm fairly certain they don't all share the same political ideology, religion, favorite flavor of ice cream etc... etc...

If he were to have said: "Joe Blow won't admitt he's behind a GOP, anti-Obama campaign"... I'd be fine with it.

Eric Boehlert is an idiot and made a disgraceful statement.

You won't hear me comment on what Jesse said as I did not see a tweet, post, e-mail, video, audio, etc. (evidence) of what he said at a bar... nothing documented other than testimony (by someone I hold in great regard, I will admit). And no... it was not gutless.. He served... graduated BUD/S class 58 in 1970 and SEALs can say anything they want about other SEALs... They take care of their own as I have read... But, That is none of my business. He did not throw anything like that out to the public that I know of.

Travis Bickle? Please.... Use "Goose" or "Forest Gump" instead (although they wouldn't help your point).

Matt... Just leave the SEALs alone... As you have pointed out before... we have real problems elsewhere.

@Matt2 I didn't accuse you of defending him. I just don't think you've thought it thru completely. You'll notice please that I addressed your remarks respectfully and didn't accuse you of being in the tank for the Democrats. And it is politics, I agree. It's not bi-partisan, I agree. And the Democrats will NEVER investigate this administration for intel leaks in a million years. Because like Beohlert they will claim its "just politics", that the critics are secret GOP operatives and then they will move along without ever looking into it. Because to them, leaking classified information is just politics too. It's no big deal.

@Matt2 @engelbrad Boehlerts comment about the SEALs not having the guts to admit they're running a GOP anti-Obama compaign is his way of dismissing them without addressing the substance of their position. So what if they are? It doens't mean shit in terms of addressing the validity of their claims. These guys are accusing the White House of intentionally compromising OPSEC, does he think they're going to still vote for Obama? Here's the thing. Even if the White House is leaking this stuff and compromising lives and missions, it's not going to do a thing to sway Beohlert from supporting Obama. What does that say about him. His supposed respect for people serving this country isn't worth much is it?

@BrandonWebb  I DESPISE Eric Boehlert.  This morning, on the front page of my newspaper I read the story of the loss of Pfc Michael R. Demarsico II killed by an IED in Afghanistan.  He was 20 years old, assigned to JBLM (my neighbor) and from a small town in Mass. Not SOF personnel or a name that will be recognized outside of his unit and small town, but GUTSY enough to volunteer, put himself in harm's way and be lost before he had a chance to fully live - lost in order to protect the very freedom that Eric Boehlert has abused to malign  those that protect his sorry ass.  I wish to Sapa that it was a rare thing to see in my newspaper, but it's not.  I sincerely hope EB , the GUTLESS wonder who hides behind the safety of words on a screen, IS reading this thread and begins to feel the absolute contempt he is held in.  Respect and honor still mean something; I may not like the position the former SEALs have taken, but I honor them for their GUTS and sacrifice.

I get really tired of hearing from media that it's ok to report any information they get.  NO! No, it's not.  The problem is most media and most of our politicans do care that it could put lives or operations in danger.  There is a reason that some information is classified and if people aren't smart enough to understand that then well, we need more ditch diggers (sorry no disrespect to ditch diggers)  out there because they sure as hell aren't really qualified to serve the American Publics need and safety.

I have never been in the military but have MANY family members who have been in the military or are currently in the military.  It makes me sick to my stomach to know that cowards who hide behind a computer or politicians who have diarrhea of the mouth may put them at risk.  Especially since most of the time they don't report the real truth anyway, they take the story and twist it, turn it to fit their own perverted needs.  In my book they are no better than any other brainless radical zealot out there.

It's ok for our country to be proud and stand behind our warriors (male and female), and it's ok to get information that has been declassified to the American Public so we can all know the hard job these men and women face.   BUT when it puts those same lives at risk because someone decides it's ok to divert from being a responsible journalist to a Enquirer type journalist then in my book they are just traitors.....plain and simple.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised about much Jack.  I have to admit I do have several journalist and reporters as friends.  It's just they seem to know when to stop, when not to cross that line (although the line can get fuzzy I know).  I also know of several journalists or reporters that just don't give a damn about the fall out of their stories just as long as it gets their careers where they want them.  The same goes for politicans except they seem to be even worse.  It's tough because you want to believe that there is more humanity among Americans.....but I guess it's a dog eat dog world isn't it?  Very sad, especially for our warriors and for most Americans.

I may have missed part of the discussion in the mass of comments (and yes, I'm guilty of adding to them in a particularly frivolous way), but have we discussed the fundamental core question of 'what does civilian America need to know' - not what to know, but NEED to know.   From my viewpoint, I needed to know OBL was dead.  I needed to know that we did it.  I needed to know that he was really, really dead and there was absolutely no mistake about it.  I liked knowing that it was SOF who killed him because it made me feel proud and safe, but did I need to know that?  I was glued to the TV and commentaries because it helped reinforce the believe he was really dead, but did I need that information?  I needed to know that our military was smart and capable because of the uncertainty of the world that my grandchildren will inherit.  I needed to know that America was still strong enough that we thumbed our noses at Pakistan.  I needed the illusion of safety.   I needed that moment of feeling totally united and being an American.  I did not need to know operational secrets and planning - I just needed to know there were capable people doing it.  I didn't even understand most of it.  I bristle at the notion that there is someone, somewhere that determines what I need to know, but that is simply my personal independent streak - but it is the reality and has to be.  As a civilian, I'm always going to be simplistic about this (unless conspiracy is a hobby of mine).  What separates me from the sheep herd is that I know I'm a sheep.  I just have to trust in the shepherds, because the alternative is to have no sense of security in my life.   So, what do you think we sheep need to know?

Totally agree. I've always felt most of the government and the civilian community were given much more information than they need to know, or that is safe for them to know. The news media's idea that the people, "... have a right to know." is just so much bilge water. They don't have a right to know anything that that may benefit the other side and put our people in unnecessary jeopardy.

I would like to have the news media report news and not editoralize. It is not their job to tell me what a piece of news means or to put their spin on it. Report it and move on or change the name of the activity to the "editoralizing, liberal spin doctor media".

Matt2, it is my opinion that the news media should not report information that will put our armed forces personnel in more danger than they already are. You can call that censorship if you would like. I would call it responsible, patriotic reporting.

STGCS SW
STGCS SW 5pts

 @Matt2

Never said that and never implied it, and if you understood the Consitution and the beliefs of the Founding Fathers you would understand. In reference to religion the First Amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..."

What that means, and what was clearly intended by the Founding Fathers, is that the government could not establish a mandatory state church. It in no way authorizes the government to keep me from exercising my rights to worship and in fact clearly says they cannot make any law that prohibits free exercise of my religion. Yet they do it all the time. Makes no difference what my religion is, this includes all religions. However, the US government has made numerous laws restricting religious rights. In most cases it is against Christians in actions brought by athiests; funny how athiests will overlook public displays of religion where Islam, Budda, Hindu, etc. are concerned but  seem to focus on the Jewish and Christian issues. How someone who doesn't believe in God can be so infatuated with God is beyond me. I think if I were an athiest I would find better things to do with my time than worry about someone's worship who believed in a God that I didn't believe existed. I guess athiests are just bored and have nothing better to do.

Back to your post. What I did say is that there is no such thing as a Constitutional "wall of seperation" between church and state. Find that term anywhere in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, or even the Declaration of Independance, and I'll give a public apology if you would like.

In closing, to further establish the Founding Fathers beliefs, the Congress, since its beginning, has opened in prayer every session. In addition, the Congressional halls used to be used for religious services. You also might try reading the Founding Fathers quotes to get a handle on what they really believed. Try the Patriot Post online.

@Matt2 There is a win in these wars. A few points. First, they think as Westerners and Christians we are weak and decadent and have no stomach for a good fight. If they watch American TV they can't help but think that. We have to establish that we are willing to keep busting them up as long as they want to fuck with us. At some point, these simpletons who respect NOTHING but force will realise that being a jihadi is a dead end philosophy. A pre-paid ticket to a life expectancy considerably shorter than the 45 years they average right now. Better to put your life to better use. Every islamist we kill now is not going to have kids and raise them to be little islamists later on. After 10 years we have seriously erroded their most dedicated idealists. Even during its zenith in Iraq, the Islamists had to pay, threaten and drug their fighters to pick up a weapon. AS far as I am concerned the so called "fight you forever" attitude of the islamists is mostly a myth created by media no nothings. Second, by demonstrating that we will go anywhere to kill them irrespective of national boundries we are making it hard for the Islamists to find a place to heal up, regroup and plan. Who will take them without risking invasion by the US? We are keeping them on their heels. They can't plan attacks on our civilians when they are just trying to stay out of the way of a JDAM or A-10 strafing run. Third, we are not too broke to defend our country and its citizens. That's the FIRST duty of government. We are too broke to give Federal money to free loaders, NPR, the arts and the UN, zero out those items on the budget before you cut a single bullet from the budget. The military is the only Gov't "jobs program" worth its salt. If you think wars are expensive you have no idea of what it would cost to seal off this country. We can't keep harmless Mexicans from coming across the border just to pick tomatoes, do you think we can stop terrorists? We can't defend this country from the inside, we have to do it proactively. That brings us to our losses. This may sound harsh but 'that's the job.' We don't have a draft in this country. We do not send "Press Gangs" out to grab people off the street and send to fight. Our people volunteer. They are not drugged or threatened. They aren't bribed, they're underpaid in fact. Our troops are not accidentally drowning in the pool at the Playboy Mansion(which would be a tragic death). They are 'giving' their lives in the service of their country. They offered their lives up willingly in service of a cause bigger than just their own self preservation, which is the default condition of Man. For some it is their country, or their family, or to avenge a lost friend or family member. Often, its simply for the love of the guy next to them that they give up their lives. In a real way, these men are the greatest gift America has ever given to the world. They are a moral lesson to a debased and selfish world that there are principles and causes worth fighting and dying for. That's what people like Beohlert can't comprehend and he calls it 'gutless.' To him guts is someone telling Barbara Streisand she can't sing anymore. He just saying what all his friends are saying at cocktail parties. He doesn't have the guts to disagree with the priviledged, goat eyed herd of latte sippers who's approval means everything to him. Because those people pay him to ape their views not think outside the hive. So much for speaking truth to power. Finally, look at a map. The entire middle eastr is being transformed before our eyes. Social upheaval in Libya, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. It Iran isn't scared to death of a US President polling in the low 40's and trying to win relection they're complete idiots. The Saudis are just barely keeping a lid on things. If that part of the world explodes in sectarian violence with muslim killing muslim that isn't a bad thing for us. We can't reform Islam ourselves unless we invade their countries, kill their religious leaders and convert them to Presbyterianism, so they will have to do it themselves. The way they have done it for 1000 years, by killing each other until one side says "Uncle!!" We just have to make sure its the right side giving up. It just can't be us. We have to be the strongest tribe.

@ArcticWarrior @Matt2 @STGCS SW The press cooperated in OPSEC in WWII because they actually wanted America to win that war. The same can't be said of the media today. The press is on its own side. They have invested 10 years in telling us that Afghanistan and Iraq are wastes of time, hopeless, illegal, unaffordable and the fault of one man. George Bush. If the US is victorious in either of these conflicts it means the media was wrong. And they simply will not be wrong.

@ArcticWarrior  @Matt2 I tried to move to Canada - I was rejected.  A whole country rejected me for gawd's sake.  I did not have a 'desired' occupation - so I was rejected for being undesirable.  I sulked for weeks.  The Nixon administration proved the value of freedom of the press...it's been downhill since then as reporters have looked for the next big cover-up.  And we Americans sheepishly and quietly gave up more rights by not screaming louder about the Patriot's Act.  Fear ruled us.  Freedom and democracy are messy, adaptable and the concepts so individualized that I suspect no two people would be able to agree on the fundamental concepts of them.  This is a good thing as it allows evolution and growth..the key is ensuring what we will evolve into.

I agree in priciple, but all is not apple pie. The 2d Pres, Adams had the Alien and Sedition Act which one section, made it a crime to publish "false, scandalous, and malicious writing" against the government or certain officials. A bunch of folks were prosecuted, its a crazy story. I mean these were guys who founded the nation. it expired on the last day of his term and TJ didnt re up it. So in short, Uncle Sam has often restricted the freedom of press. What happens when we dont have written press, as in its all digital, then what. We already have the Patriot Act and SOPA, and the Govt by Law controls the airwaves, you cant even show a tit or ass without sanctions and can lose your broadcast license, what if an Administration doesnt like the rhetoric one day and shuts down a media outlet?

Well the 1st isnt absolute, for instance you can not jump up in a court room and just start ranting, or in the Senate Chambers etc. Its a good thing that this brand of press and leakers didnt exist for Overlord, the 82d and 101st would have been creamed.  It is a political ad no doubt, but I think the message at its core is correct. Truman didnt spike the ball after dropping the bomb. And Dub never should have done the Mission Accomplished thing or say Bring It On during the early insurgency as well. Maybe its a symptom of an instant access info age? Maybe then privately they did do it but the press and staff didnt leak it?

I'm no Constitutional lawyer but I don't see anything in the Constitution that says the people have a right to know, or even a need to know. the First Ammendment does say we have freedom of speech but there is a huge difference between what the media does now and the right of free speech.

The media and liberal America has so bastardized the First Amendment that it now has little resemblance to the intent of the Founding Fathers. How can I know that? I read quotes and historical papers from the middle 1700’s to the 1800’s when our Founding Fathers were stating their views on what a free country should be.

The Founding Fathers had no intention of putting our armed forces in unnecessary danger by allowing people and government to openly share battle plans, strengths, and other military “secrets”. What is it that the government and media of today do not understand about the word “secret”? And when did it become acceptable to publish/broadcast otherwise classified information if you claimed it was provided by a “… high ranking reliable source…”? If the source doesn’t have the balls to speak openly then the source shouldn’t be speaking. If the information provided by that “high ranking reliable source” is classified the media should be forced to divulge the source and appropriate action taken to make sure that source doesn’t have access to classified information any longer.

And don’t even start me on the abuses of the First Amendment against religion. HEY!!! There is no such thing as a Constitutional wall of separation between church and state!

Sound of me stepping off my soapbox.

@ArcticWarrior Truthfully, I would have been seriously annoyed if he had been captured and a whole lengthy trial circus began.   There was no way to have 'justice' done - too many lives lost/damaged/destroyed both here and abroad for the death of one man to balance it out.  Nope, just wanted him dead - one piece or many pieces didn't matter to me.

And if my baking skills sound too girly to be valuable, I can also skin & butcher a deer or elk, scrape and tan the hide, and use them on a shelter I built out of willow or vine maple.  I just can't kill them 'cause I don't know how to shoot gun nor arrow.

@ArcticWarrior I have never fully understood the need to enter Iraq.  The best (meaning resonated with me) explanation I have read was in "The Only Thing Worth Dying For", and it showed me that it was such a complex situation that I could never have a valid, knowledgeable opinion on whether it was or was not a good decision.  I wasn't surprised SH made it to trial, only surprised (and pleased) that America gov. didn't do it.  He is another one that just needed to be get gone for what was done to the Kurds.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
