Introducing New SOFREP Writer, Coriolanus

by Jack Murphy · August 18, 2012 · Posted In: Admin, Special Operations

 I want to take a moment to introduce our newest SFOREP writer to our readers and welcome him to the team.  Coriolanus comes from a background in intelligence analysis and is quite simply a wealth of information, bringing a completely new perspective to SOFREP that Brandon and I are sometimes lacking.  When I asked Coriolanus to write for us I was half joking, not because I didn’t want him, but because I never thought I would talk a high caliber analysist like him into it! -Jack

Coriolanus’s background is as an all source fusion intelligence analyst. He currently works as a hybrid intelligence analyst and data scientist (similar to ORSA). He has worked in the intel industry for over ten years and specializes in DoD joint intelligence analysis, counter terrorism, joint targeting, and cyber information operations, among others. Coriolanus has worked at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels of war working for special mission units and policy makers; and working in areas such as Central and South America, Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of war, and throughout Southeast Asia. He retains a B.A. in International Relations from a US university and is finishing a grad degree in his field with a focus on counter terrorism, and speaks a second language fluently.

Due to his placement and access, clearance, and desire for privacy, Coriolanus is a pseudonym for a FNULNU citizen who bleeds red, white, and blue. More importantly the views he elaborates on should not be construed to represent the views of the government of the United States of America, it’s representatives, or his employer. They are his and his alone. Welcome to spook country.

Coriolanus,

Any comment you'd like to post regarding the Syrian civil war, its connection to Iran, the continued military buildup in the region, and the increasing likelihood of a much larger scale conflict? While the article in this link suggests some views I don't subscribe to, their are some nuggets of information that are very thought provoking;

Guest Post: Syria And Iran Dominos Lead To World War

Summary of points;

1)  Syria And Iran Will Join Forces

2)  Iran Will Shut Down The Strait Of Hormuz

3)  Israeli Action Will Draw In The U.S.

4)  Syria Will Receive Support From Russia And China

5)  Economic Implosion Will Become “Secondary”…To The Banksters’ Benefit (the "Secondary...Bankster" commentary is where the author lost me)

 @CJCJ @Coriolanus  in addittion to the above, I really thought since Romney might gain the upper hand with an :October Card", then seemingly Obama was playing along with Israel, now we have an element that is diturbing and I hope it gets included in any further discussions. i.e.: Israeli officials said Tuesday that Egypt's deployment in recent days of heavier U.S.-made M60 tanks went further than agreed and violated the accord. And the fact our state department is backing this is interesting. This changes the entire scenario. Or does it? In my mind, it is getting complicated.

 @CJCJ I for one, am excited about this. I would like to add anything I can that is nit found on the internet and not considered classified. This topic can not come soon enough, in my opinion. Its the 2nd wave of the latest 30 year Jihad.

Coriolanus

 @CJCJ Most people see that as a narrative. I can't say I agree totally.

I would recommend reading (as much I do not like the Kagans): "Syria's Armed Opposition", Holliday, Joseph. Institute for the Study of War, Middle East Quarterly Report 3, Mar 2012.

Buy (on Amazon, its cheaper) "The Syrian Uprising: A Militant Leadership Monitor Special Report". Zambelis, Zenn, Moubayed, and others. Jamestown Foundation, Militant Leadership Monitor, April 2012.

I think it should be clear that any comments I make here will not be any more or less elucidating than a pundit. Everyone on the internet has the same access to sources of information, and the clarity I personally derive is from sources NOT available to the public. So if I write a point here it could be construed a number of ways. 1. He's not telling us everything. Which would be true. Always. Every time. 2. Points he makes support his undisclosed knowledge. This would NOT be true. Especially not every time. 3. Points he makes do not support his undisclosed knowledge. This might be true some of the time. 4. I get paid to make "true" fusion analysis. Its not going to happen on this forum for A TON of reasons, other than the aforementioned ones.

HOWEVER,

 I will post pieces akin to what Jack is posting, with a different perspective. They will contain analysis. They will contain a bibliography with sources you can reference. Things you can find on your own and you are free to rebut, argue, discuss, etc. But it's a shadow of what I do for Uncle Sam. So don't equivocate. The writing here and the job are not equal. For right now, I have a list of postings. Syria is in there. But it will be a bit.

Finally,

 To your question..my analysis and synthesis on this is not short enough for a comment. It's also not built yet. I have an outline of thoughts, but I promise that I will give you that post in the future.

@notdrakebell @Coriolanus Wouldn't be funny if Coriolanus was actually a bot designed to measure the success of its "protocols" (I don't know shit about computers LOL) when interacting with humans? That was strictly for the fun of positing the theory, you know? Tin-foil hat status! ;-) C just has the best possible response at the best possible time. That's stone cold, bro, just frosty... BTW, listened to Bassnectar, Flux Pavilion, Skrillex, etc. for 11 straight hours today while driving to San Jose. That's my new shit, I'm rockin it like its the thing to do. Glad to have you on board Coriolanus. Ever since completing my BA in Poli Sci I've wanted to earn my grad degree in IR; not sure what emphasis but CT is certainly one I would consider. It sounds nerdy but the field of intel has always gotten me fired up. I know there is only so much you can share but if you could ever offer some insight as to how you got started in the business, it would be appreciated. Looking forward to your contributions.

 @Matt2  @notdrakebell I saw a great .357 HS wound a few years ago from a Deputy Sheriff buddy.  A wrestling match for his revolver brought about a discharge against his L thigh, in about the anatomical middle of his anterior thigh.  He had the barrel in his L hand as the weapon went off.  So, muzzle blast blew a small chunk of his hand away, and the bullet made a cool groove in the x-ray as it passed over his femur, without breaking it or hitting the femoral artery.  An amazing injury to see, provided you weren't the one in the gown!  The bullet stayed in tact, and gathered just at the subcutaneous or adipose layer on his hamstring.

The ER is an amazing place when an officer is shot but not seriously hurt.  Once everyone realizes the officer is okay, the jokes come hot and heavy, and my buddy was well out of reach of all of us making him feel loved.

As he was being prepped for the OR, a serious GSW came in from the 'hood, where a guy had taken 5 rounds to the abdomen and groin.  My buddy had to wait 12 more hours to get that round removed.

@notdrakebell @Coriolanus @Matt2 Hydrostatic effects by projectiles occur. Shooting a weapon into the water will demonstrate. Whether or not that has an effect on neurons is certainly debatable. However, the human body is composed of 80% water or 45% as you age. Either way its hard for me to believe that concussive shock waves at higher velocities do not affect neurons. Now, to counter that, I can't calculate the elasticity of neurons. Some damage may be permanent, other temporary. My two cents.

 @notdrakebell  @FLNavyVet  @HugeFan  @Matt2  @ArcticWarrior That sucks about the Glock, but there are lots of good pistols out there.  You can reload .45 for $8 per 50(box) easy.  Lots of guys do it for less, but I hate cleaning lead out of barrels so I shoot jacketed mostly.  Still way cheaper than buying retail.  And today's expanding 9mm rounds are way better than the old hardball stuff that we hear about in the old stories about stopping power.  Shoot what you like and can practice with.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
