Sometimes it is a very small world, with unexpected connections. I have just learned that Ambassador Stevens was a member of the Chinook Tribe, which is a neighboring tribe to my own. Ceremonies here will be done for him.
As more and more coverage is coming I just read this: http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/14/us/benghazi-victims/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 I only met Glen the one time and was very honored that he had a round with me and took time to chat and tell me some stories. He truly was mofokin awesome!!! For everyone that knew him I know this is a big loss. And although these are just words, they have my deepest condolences. I will keep him in memory always. As these attacks continue, it's easy to say all Muslims are crazy, fanatics. And it's very easy to say kill them all. None of them are good. Or very few of them are. And it's equally quick to jump on the band wagon and say kill them all. But I know/want to believe just like with any nation/religion not everyone is evil. There are good people in every nation/religion. But these attacks only help prove how evil/fanatic this religion (Muslims) are. And I don't want to be simple minded or jump on any band wagon. I know that as an American we welcome all and as a Catholic I should forgive everyone and as a human being have compassion for everyone. But right now I'm just upset/angry and want to force myself into believing we are better off with out them. No good has come from them. All they gave us is war. And yes I can argue we brought this on ourselves through years of politics and current politics contributed or current politics aren't making things better. But there has to be a line, a fine one if that between going all out genocide like hilter and welcoming everyone with open arms, turning the other cheek. Throwing millions at them and saying its going to help hasn't worked. Maybe we should cut all funding to everyone and worry about the USA first! At this point I'm just ranting and typing on an iPad. But going by the CNN article Glen believed in them and wanted to help. So in his memory I'll continue to forgive and hope the good ones rise up against the radicals.
Brandon, I want to send along my personal condolences to you on the loss of your friend. These are only words but I hope you can eventually find peace in your loss. I sent a simple prayer skyward yesterday for Glen and a new star is up with a little bit of kharma for him. Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, –and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of –Wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air… Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark or even eagle flew — And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. John Gillespie Magee, Jr
I'm terribly sorry to hear this... I have never met him personally, but I know him and Brandon were incredibly close. Losing a friend like that, and someone who personally contributed to SOFREP, is a terrible blow to all of us. I'm rereading all I can about Glen in The Red Circle. Brandon (and the SOFREP/LOR community), Glen will be in my mind as a brave man who was the real deal. RIP Glen Doherty and Ty Woods, gone but not forgotten.
Also, as much as I'd like to, I don't know how to change my photo for the blackout. Please don't interpret my photo as a sign of apathy or lack of care.
@GageReckart No one would make that mistake, you're good Gage. If so desired, all I did was open a word doc, black it out and save the file where I could easily get to it. Then I just selected it from the "Browse" function at the livefyre>profile>settings page. Took a few seconds. You still don't have to do it; honest, heartfelt words can be just as good.
RIP Ty Woods and Glen Doherty. You're service is beyond appreciated.
Brandon, I'm sorry for your loss. Its a sad day for SOFREP and the SEAL community.
I just learned about Glen. I'm sorry for your loss. You and the SEAL community are in my thoughts.
The Muslim Brotherhood's English-language Twitter account (@Ikhwanweb) retweeted a message from deputy head Khairat el-Shater saying he was "relieved none of @USEmbassyCairo staff was harmed" and hoped U.S.-Egypt relations "will sustain [the] turbulence of Tuesday's events."
What a bunch of DBs
We need to remind them Hosni's name was on that account not theirs. Then give Israel and India the money. Let Israel buy 22s and what ever else they want. Then repair our long over due relationship with India and pull Paks money while we are at it.
Little stickier with Libya what with all the major oil companies signing new drilling and pipeline leases since Uncle Mo departed, but we can figure that out at a later date.
@ArcticWarrior @50run50gun Right on and word to ya mutha... India is looking better and better everyday. I'm still not sold on Israel's loyalties to the U.S. (we seem to be a friend every time that they want to bomb somebody, not when we need something like a resolution with Palestine) but will take them over anyone else in that neighborhood.
I will add that we need a Sec of State that has (surprise, surprise) mil/intel/spook experience though. Let me explain: Hil is not my favorite person. She has parlayed her roles in life to get other roles that she isn't/hasn't been qualified to fill. I remember her handing Sergei Lavrov (Russia's Foreign Minister) a "reset" button like the Staples "Easy" button and feeling so ashamed. It's one thing to be amicable and amenable in public but quite another when you look like you're groveling.
Russia is in much worse condition then the US is (despite it's natural resources, because their resources are no more "infinite" than our's) economically, militarily and with regards to foreign policy; their closest friends are Syria, Iran and Venezuela? We're also their "friends"? Really? Don't piss on me and tell me it's raining. The other foot needs to drop in 2013... take from that whatever you wish.

Brandon: When I e-mailed you yesterday about whether the ROE's might have contributed to the murders of yet more American Heros I had no idea you had lost a friend. My deepest condolances for your loss and the loss to our Nation. With the utmost respect, Robert Gerard
Brandon and all,
It was tragic to hear about Glen. You are all in my thoughts today. Best wishes to his family and friends.
I thought embassys are protected by Marines, why were there no Marines on staff?! Especially in Libya?!Anyone care to fill in? Budget cuts?
@ITRIEDEL At embassies there are indeed Marines there for security purposes but they receive direction on their Rules of Engagement from the ambassador (unless I am mistaken). It was at a consulate, not the embassy, where our people were killed. There were very few security personnel located at that facility as I understand it.
@SeanGH @ITRIEDEL "Embassy" duty, unfortunately for the Ambassador and the three other gentlemen not "Consulate" duty... I think that the security element was simply outgunned. Having read Wasdin's book, it seems that the security elements are not much different from Secret Service in TTP's and that the is onslaught was well outside the purview of their tactical abilities. This was a coordinated and thoroughly planned attack that seemed to only worsen for our men. Grain of salt...
And now that the second name is released, I offer this:
Not to diminish the loss of the ambassador or the others lost in Libya, but the SEAL community lost two yesterday:
Glen cuts very close to SOFREP home, he posted here and was a close friend of Brandon. He wrote an article in May: http://sofrep.com/6627/swcc-not-just-seal-taxi-service/
If you find it in your hearts, offer a prayer for the families of the lost.
@Tango9 I am a military writer for the San Diego newspaper: U-T San Diego. Sorry to intrude here, but if anyone who knew Doherty or Woods (RIP) would like to say something in their memory please contact me at (619) 293-1293, or email email@example.com. From Gretel C. Kovach (normally the Marine Corps and AFG war zone reporter around here.)
@gckovach we have no comment at this point. Brandon will let you know.
@gckovach I understand and thanks for your kind words. SOFREP team will let you know shortly.
@Tango9 Thanks Tango9. Standing by. I know family is making the rounds of national TV now, but it would be nice to have something in print to memorialize them here in their current hometown communities. Such a loss...
@Tango9 You may recall his post on the Load out Room about Military Contractors as well.
@Tango9 I just read this news on the nypost and i am in complete shock. I met Glen and Jack while waiting on Brandon to arrive at a NYC book signing. I chatted with Glen for 30 mins or so and was fortune enough to have a round with him. He was such a nice guy, really great guy. Please pass my condolences to Glen's family, BW and JM. I'll light a candle for him and say a prayer.
@HugeFan @Recon6 @Ceilo @Tango9 Tthe UDT/Navy SEAL Museum is just a short drive down the road from me. Not sure if there is anything we can do there with those guys as Glen and Ty were no longer active duty....I'll be heading down though to make a contribution, kneel and place my hands on the piece of steel from the World Trade Centers and say a prayer for our shipmates.
"[I've] been making contributions to SEAL Foundation and Green Beret Foundation for a Long time.
Great organizations that Need the help. And the majority of the families are of the enlisted personnel that are in desperate need. R6
I'm callin' party foul on that, 6! LOL Because nobody here canNOT "like" that comment! Right on man, someday I hope that I can throw more in the pot but I'm signed up for monthly contribs (at a lower amount though) so I sleep better at night...
That said: any service member that needs their lawn mowed(or ABSOLUTELY any assistance, I'm handy with a wrench), hit me up; I'm in the Portland Metro Area in the great and weird state of Oregon(and Washington too, sometimes)... Okay Storm, I'll mow your lawn too because I luv ya! "-P
@Ceilo @Tango9 A great place to start is right here! If you scroll over the NSWC tab above you'll see a link to the Navy SEAL Foundation. As Glen and Ty were both SEALs, their families will now be entitled to whatever assistance the NSF has to offer. Click on that and they will provide you with options on how to support and care for our SOF community. Good post!
@Tango9 Please advise us if there is something we/I can do to help Glen's family. Maybe SOFREP we have a collection. Again this is such a tragic loss.
Glen's brother on FOX - http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/13/former-navy-seal-identified-as-embassy-attack-victim/
I can't imagine how you guys feel but my anger is off the charts. I feel so bad for the family members. I keep thinking of ST 3 Echo Platoon's patch - Embrace the Hate. Payback is a bitch and it's coming in hot!
@Tango9 Hope you don't mind but I wanted to share in the solidarity with you, AW and the rest of SOFREP... truly black days
@HugeFan @notdrakebell @ArcticWarrior No my friends, we all have seen too much death and it never ends. From weak administrations sending kids off to die, to career Diplomats in countries they love, it is all ending in death. Sometimes a 'hard heart' is the only way to defeat them. Pandering to tyrants shows weakness, and we are weak in the eyes of our enemies. Peer into Iraq today, and A-stan soon, we will be gone, and for what? So many dead, on both sides, but the enemy will continue to strengthen and return in force from their enclaves. Remember what happened in V.N. when we left "a military capable of defending themselves", the NVA went thru them like a knife thru butter!!
Often we are just wrong and countries do not want Democracy, the people don't know what Democracy even means. We cannot force feed our beliefs to people with thousands of years of persecution. If they want freedom, let them Earn it the way We Did, fight the Oppressors! R6
HugeFan tells it like it is. "Phone sucker" is a bad actor and not Richie Cunningham or Wally Cleaver taking OUR Ambassador to the hospital as some press and other "official" accounts are claiming.
IMHO: Phone Sucker-Wanted-Dead or Alive (but preferably dead).
@HugeFan @Recon6 @notdrakebell @ArcticWarrior Fan, I"ve felt like I've had a ulcer in my stomach all damn day as I learned more about the facts on the ground there...nothing wrong with emotion brother...we've just got to use it constructively. Like you I've seen too damn many of our warriors and those who didn't wear a uniform, give their lives for places I could really give two shits about in the grand scheme of things. You're right...does harden the heart brother...
@notdrakebell @ArcticWarrior It's all good NDB, I understand 100% where you are coming from. I won't mind this time around apologizing if the remarks that I have made here today disparage an entire country of people. However that is all it would be because Tripoli has not been our friend since our nation's inception (SEE: the U.S. Marine Corps Hymn) and while there are good eggs everywhere, they need to be "cracking" and disposing of the bad eggs. When that doesn't happen... this shit does and I am over watching Americans get killed trying to assist their own killers. I'm an asshole or haven't you all figured that out yet?
The heart hardens because you have seen it enough times. Mog, Fallujah, this one. The Ambassador WAS our Country. Taking him and the Consular buildings like that was a definate statement. It was planned and rehearsed no doubt. Laying an ambush for the QRF with a second element is not the makings of a rag tag group of protesters. This news has been out in the foreign press all day, ours is just catching up with watered down versions of other peoples stories. Jeez AJ-E had the breakdown MSN has now last night.
Like I said, there is zero doubt in my mind that SOME Libyans helped him or attempted to. However, I don't see this like a Hollywood film (I'm also NOT saying that you do) where it's a well-orchestrated plan by AQ to shift the GWOT to Libya and by themselves time in AFG or anywhere else. I feel that the citizenry in the Middle Eastern states are predominantly anti-U.S. and therefore the amount of people out at 3AM in Benghazi looking to help the Americans were/are severely out-numbered by those who are "treasure hunting" or otherwise not our biggest supporters. How copy NDB? Good points man!
@notdrakebell @ArcticWarrior Look bro, I'm sure that out of the rabble there were some solid guys just like you and I thinking "This is not how I want my country and people to be represented" but I'm sure that the second those men turned up and attempted any assistance they were probably killed and beaten as well for being traitors to the "cause". I have used the big brush today because I no longer believe in the viability of educating the populace as to the "truths" of the modern world (like for instance: It's not God/Allah or whoever that makes the world turn, it's physics and a quasi-free market global economy). I hope that no innocent people ever get hurt but that is exactly what happens sometimes. The place needs to be razed and rebuilt... again.
When I first saw those photos I called BS on that story. Those guys had that all too familiar "look" about them. And the cell cameras all over and the AK sight post didnt disuade me in the other photos. Then we dont even get the body until well after, and at the airport no less. Im thinking no peaceful protesters were going to help the victim and target of the attack while surrounded by killers who apparently were still fighting. The photos had the look of Uncle Mos last moments. We can all put together what we saw, and we should be outraged our Govt isnt being honest with us about it.
An attack on a Diplomat is an age old no-no.
I'll put a new one up on Monday but I'm NEVER going to forget this week or the men who have recently died trying to help an ass-backward country/culture try to pull their collective head out of their collective ass and join the modern world. I've met cockroaches that I have more sentimental feelings for than those people and I really want that smug-fucker-with-the-cell-phone-in-his-mouth's name.
Think it's all good buddy? The US has a picture of you with our vainquished embassador and it doesn't look to us like your helping him so I recommend the one-eye open sleep pattern for the rest of your miserable life. Delta might come say "Hi" and show you why Chuck Norris is a pussy...
@HugeFan No one minds, huge. All thoughts and prayers are welcome.
