Did the U.S. train a Taliban Air Force?

Did the U.S. train a Taliban Air Force
In his online magazine, Michael Yon has an interesting take on Green on Blue attacks.  The Taliban should use air power.

The Taliban claims that their recent attack on Camp Bastion in southern Afghanistan was a direct attempt to kill Prince Harry.  Fifteen attackers breached the wire, killed two U.S. Marines, and destroyed six AV-8 Harriers with two more damaged.

The U.S. has bought the Afghan Air Force MI-17V5 helicopters and taught them to fire rockets.  This provides a renegade pilot the ability to attack an airfield, land 15 Taliban commandos in the middle of an ISAF base or deliver a 10.000 pound suicide bomb.

Wether they attack Harry, NATO aircraft or ISAF forces, this could be very bad.  I hope the bad guys don’t read Yon’s website.  I hope our red cell guys do.

Most of the 'taliban' that get in on the 'kill the trainers' bandwagon aren't exactly high-level guys. As part of the force-building, US and other ISAF forces train Afghan mortar crews, artillery batteries, anti-tank teams, rocket artillery units, snipers, machine gunners and demolition crews. Plus crewmen for attack and transport helicopters, and old-and-stripped M1 battle tanks.

Yet every time we hear of an Afghan ANA/ANP recruit who turns on his trainers, it's some guy with an AK just a couple of weeks after they first turn up. No rogue mortar crews, helicopter pilots or tank crews have yet turned on ISAF forces. I think we're reasonably safe in training Afghan helicopter pilots to fly helicopters.

The Taliban had several dozen helicopters at their disposal while they were in power. They killed the crewmen who knew how to fly them, and couldn't fly them themselves, so they sat in Kabul until the US liberated the city.

OFF TOPIC

Was over at B5 a few minutes ago.  Former SEAL Froggy attended Ty Moore's funeral and quotes Mrs. Moore from her eulogy of Ty:

"To all the Operators here today I give you this charge: Rid the world of those savages.  I'll say it again, RID THE WORLD OF THOSE SAVAGES!"

Thought you all might be interested in her words.

http://www.blackfive.net/main/2012/09/rid-the-world-of-those-savages.html#comments

Froggy was lamenting the fact that he wasn't able to record the eulogy.  Did any of the fine olks here attend and have the ability to round out his report?

Don't know Froggy's reputation in the SEAL community, but he has always had an interesting perspective.

This article shows how incredibly brave Doherty and Woods were that night, and sets the record straight so as not to lump them in with the failed security that was at the mission that night. It's disgusting the way the officials have tried to say they were responsible for security there when it wasn't the case and they knew so while using SEALS as political chips again.

On another note, WHS Spokesman Carney finally admitted that it was a terrorist attack on the mission, “It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. Our embassy was attacked violently and the result was four deaths of American officials – that's self-evident," The f-ing balls on these ppl who have been saying it was a protest about a movie, makes me full of hate and discontent reading the lies. They've been doing anything to shift the blame away from what actually happened and are hoping that none of us realize it come November. Won't say anymore since this isn't a politcs site, but damn...

iharangozo

@marbito11 my mistake. the most ive heard recently about the guys dying overseas is from friendly fire, specifically afghan np's on us. clearly it's very hard to trust afghanis with small arms, and now we're teaching them to fly attack helicopters. it doesn't matter what the average afghan mountain boy thinks. what matters is what the smart and seemingly normal afghan pilot to be thinks. Yeah, the majority may be illiterate, but you can just stick those guys in the helo and let them do the running and gunning. again, all speculation, but nothing too incredibly far-fetched. We should get all our SF guys to give the enemy a play by play of how they would attack a US base! I don't see Yon's point in writing this article...

I recently read an article about how General Electric is moving their appliance production back to the US from China, in part because they finally learned the hard way that by outsourcing their production to China they were ultimately teaching their suppliers to become their competitors.

The situation in Afghanistan is similar to that of GE IMHO.

If they were to get their hands on the technologies that we used to develop the RAH-66 Commanche, that would do too much to level the field in a potential adversary's favor(I'm thinking if China were to start exporting these to countries like Iran and Pakistan). I could not agree with Rod more on this one then if he had a gun to my head(I know he likes the thought of that LOL). Quite a few of those people should be going to prison for a long, long time. In my opinion, he gave out awesome points. but on further examination, some of the guys around me went "heh, uh, SHIT, there is stuff in print that is not open source" I went to bat for Yons theory, then backed away because I thought too much was said. It left us vulnerable.

Attacking Harry would take some pretty good inside intel. I can't see it. More propoganda? Correct me if I am OFF track.

When I read the title of the post I thought there was going to be a new report about the Paki's or Saudi's giving the T's surplus birds and the infrastructure to support them. I suppose it is a possibility that they could go all Airwolf, (anyone remember that 80's show with the Apache strafing bad guys in cities what a cool show I used to think that was when I was a kid,) with the Mi-17's we gave and trained em on. But I'm sure they thought of that the first time they learned of that capability and don't need any help.

One thing the article's title made me wonder  about the Bastion attack was that maybe they were trying to "steal" one of the birds, but the chances of anyone stealing an aircraft is about zero bc of all the pre-flight checks etc. that only a pilot rated for that equipment could know. Maybe someone on here that has  military aviation expertise could comment on that and let me know if that's accurate. I'm pretty sure it's more complicated than turning it over and pulling away.

Somebody's been reading a bit to much Dalton Fury.  Additionally, while this potentially might be a real threat, let's talk about the couple hundred (probably thousand) other aircraft in the Afghanistan airspace.  Many of them are civilians.  Many are operated by PMC's such as Blackwater.  Blackwater has a contract to provide ordnance services to CIA/SOF components in the loading of air delivery munitions onto Predators formerly (currently?) based in Pakistan, at Shamsi.  And we are worried about Afghan pilots, probably the most thoroughly vetted technical specialists in their entire force?  Are we worried about Blackwater flying fuel birds?  Are we worried about civilians with access to heavy weapons?  Are we worried about somebody crashing an aid/resupply bird contracted out into a COP/FOB/whatever current naming convention we are using?

This is the final level of "threat warning."  The enemy we face in Afghanistan is resilient, experienced, and intelligent.  It does not need to read Yon's website to get ideas.  It has always thought big.  It does not need to kill Prince Harry, the effect the attack had is much bigger by destroying aircraft that have not been manufactured in about 10 years now.  With each one that either falls from the sky or is wrecked by enemy action, the Marine Corps is literally down a bird until the JSF comes online.  But they are wily enough to exploit this for media consumption to talk about the Prince.  We keep pretending like books, movies, video games are giving away the farm, when as Hershel over at Captainsjournal.com keeps pointing out "the enemy knows our TTP's better then 99.9% of all American's because they face our warriors daily."

HugeFan
HugeFan moderator 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@SaysMyDerbyWife That doesn't mean we need to give them an 'express line' by which they can queue up and receive operationally secure information faster. I'd rather they attain that knowledge by engaging our forces firsthand(and losing some of their boys) and not because they were able to set up a training regimen based on accurate TTP's divulged through various media outlets. As you so correctly stated; they are not dim but rather quite bright. Why make it easy for them, right? All aside, I agree with your assessment. Although lately Afghani "allies" have proven to be less so.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
