Domestic Terror: Anonymous Makes a Bomb Threat for Nov. 5, 2012

Last night a self-proclaimed spokesman for the hacker collective known as Anonymous uploaded a YouTube video that claims they have planted a bomb in a federal building and it is set to detonate on November 5, 2012.  The video style is typical of old style Anonymous videos, showing a person in a suit and a Guy Fawkes mask, made familiar by the movie “V for Vendetta” narrating the message with voice alternation.  A twitter account @FawkesSecurity associated with the YouTube account tweeted out the threat and link to the video:

The text of the video:

“Dear citizens of the world,

We are anonymous. As of today 200 kilograms of composite Nitroglycerin and commercial explosives have effectively been concealed in a government building, situated in the united states of America. on the 5th of November 2012 the device will detonate remotely via the transmission control protocol, leaving behind severe consequences. We would like to advise that the contraption is built inside a tamper proof apparatus sensitive to physical intrusions or attempted disarmament, thus resulting in the desired effect, if the military grade device is found before the 5th of November. there is no intention, risks or circumstances what so ever to cause harm to innocent people, but we can not, say the same for the people who are the real terrorists, oppressors and war creators.

we are anonymous

we are legion

we do not forget

we do not forgive

on the 5th of November, you will expect us.”

November 5th in the United Kingdom is known as Guy Fawkes Day and also Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night.  It is traditionally a night of revelry celebrating the night when Guy Fawkes and fellow conspirators attempted to kill King James I and the Members of Parliament and to blow up the Houses of Parliament and in modern times is pretty much a party night, with a lot of parks & communities holding bonfires and barbeques.

November 5th, 2012 is also the scheduled date for an Anonymous planned protest initiated in the United Kingdom designed to create a resurgence in Anonymous protests and profile.  This protest is known as Operation Vendetta or OpVendetta, named for the movie “V for Vendetta” that is a reference point of motivation and style for Anonymous (and the source of the Guy Fawkes masks as noted above).  Anonymous spokesman AnonATeam in the UK claims,

“On the 5 November 2012 the Anonymous Collective will engage in the largest orchestrated attack on the Governments of the World. The centerpiece will be the re-enactment of the Film V for Vendetta scene at the Houses of Parliament with ground and online protests across the globe,”

The UK OpVendetta facebook page currently shows 1,631 members who have stated they will attend the public protest in the UK November 5, and while primarily scheduled as a protest in the UK, the group hopes this day will inspire protests worldwide.  Anonymous also, of course, claimed a barrage of cyber attacks will also take place on that date.

FawkesSecurity is not a new Anonymous account.  The YouTube account tied to the bomb threat has a collection of previous videos done in the same style, and FawkesSecurity recently claimed credit for the very real  Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on HSBC Bank last week and received congratulations from other Anonymous members for the hit.   FawkesSecurity is also tied to a few unpublished DDoS attacks on corporate websites.

The bomb threat announcement from FawkesSecurity was met with a flurry of skepticism from several Twitter users online at the time, with some taunting FawkesSecurity as a federal account or false flag operation aimed at painting Anonymous as a whole as a domestic terrorism organization.  FawkesSecurity’s bomb threat is possibly a bunch of hype – either designed by Anonymous to draw media attention to the OpVendetta protest or it could be a campaign created by outsiders to paint Anonymous as domestic terrorists.

Or is the threat real? Does FawkesSecurity have a bomb set to go off November 5?  Hard to say -  it is easy to scoff at the dramatics of the video threat, but then again, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility a single or group of individuals could download instructions for making a bomb, make one and plant it out there.   Sources for making a bomb in your kitchen such as the classic The Anarchists Cookbook, have been around for decades and are easy to find on the internet.  More dangerous, detailed instructions as well as contraband ingredients and materials are also easy to find on the Dark Net black markets if you know how to navigate your way there, and a good number of Anonymous hackers certainly do.  Online instructions for making bombs and other weapons are regularly circulated among al Qaeda and other terrorist forums to enable self-radicalization and terror attacks.

As is typical with more threatening or controversial Anonymous releases, some other members of Anonymous derided the announcement as a rogue or even bogus group that does not represent Anonymous as a whole.  This is a fundamental problem with the Anonymous model of activism – anyone can join Anonymous and the members delight in pointing out it is a leaderless collective. Other hackers and pundits in the InfoSec Community have long cautioned Anonymous that their activism model of a leaderless hive exposes them to manipulation and infiltration by activists with darker agenda, including terrorists.

If anyone can join, then it stands to reason FawkesSecurity’s claim to the Anonymous mantle is as legitimate as any other member.  The legitimacy of their claim to wielding a bomb remains to be seen.

@pretty_eyes Back at you, do some research. This is a group that has been affiliated with Anonymous groups for awhile now. What you're not considering at all is the fact that Anonymous is not just one group. It is a large group made up of smaller groups and independently operating individuals. Not all of Anonymous has the exact same views, there are going to be those who are more extreme in their beliefs who are willing to go farther to accomplish their goals. It is more likely that Fawkes Security is one of those more extreme groups rather than a group that came together, assisted in hacking attacks, put out pro-Anonymous information, claimed membership to Anonymous, then decided they wanted to fake it all and make a threat. Also, what would their "real" videos be when anyone can be Anonymous? Is it that anyone can be Anonymous if they support their beliefs or not? Fawkes Security has been with them up until now. Its clear that this is not a mainstream Anonymous group or a Anonymous backed attack, but these are the extremists of Anonymous' beliefs.

@pretty_eyes Who is blaming the whole? We're not. The fact of the matter is though that this is still an Anonymous affiliated group who made this threat. We know that Anonymous is non-violent up until this point, not to say that Anonymous is completely sinless though, but who do you define this group as if you don't define it as part of Anonymous? They share the goals of Anonymous, they have supported and been supported by Anonymous, they carry out cyber attacks with Anonymous. If anyone can be Anonymous then Fawkes Security is part of that, even if they are not the mainstream. And in regards to the comment you responded to Tango9 with, what you wrote was not written as opinion. You wrote that as "I'm right and you are wrong because you aren't aware enough." Trust me, if you want to find people who are going to "do some research" and not talk out of their ass it is going to be here.

According to radio station "Voice of Russia", the participants Anonymous hacker movement is preparing to launch its own service for publishing leaks, which will replace the well-known portal WikiLeaks. One of the participants in the movement in an interview with the radio station said that the portal will be TYLER free program, equipped with encryption mechanism, in which the information will be passed on decentralized P2P protocol. Such technology allows each connected computer, both as a client and as a server. In addition, the hacker said that TYLER developed on the principle of BitCoin, which is impossible to break or disable.

This is pretty wild and it brings up a lot of questions.

- My main question is this, how do these guys get the logistical support to pull this off, they are good in cyber warfare/criminal activities but stepping into the real world seems like something they are not capable of because they are exposed physically?

- As far as the leadership there has to be a leader in my opinion or at least a voice in their chat that is more respected or louder than the others. my basis for that is there is either a senior guy or leader in any form of social structure so im guessing they have some form of it as well.

hooah12
hooah12 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@TheLion03 Its likely a small group of leadership at the very top and a large number of smaller groups with their own individual leaders. Of these smaller groups some are going to be more extreme in their views and it seems that FawkesS3curity is one of those groups. In terms of logistical support all something like this would take is plenty of time, POVs for more secure transportation, and access to the internet to get information about making explosives. They would prefer not to be exposed physically, but with people with extreme hacking skills like these smaller Anonymous sub-groups its hard to say what they are capable of in terms of covering themselves.

For the past 24 hours I've watched a downpour of Tweets from people just sure that FawkesSecurity is an FBI/false flag operations.

FTR: To believe this you would have to believe the FBI made a vague bomb threat targeting federal buildings with a specific date and encouragement for others to participate - i.e. an invitation to copycats to set of bombs or call in bomb threats on Nov. 5th.

FawkesSecurity may be a number of head games - skids making drama - a resurrection of the LulzSec anarchistic rampage ideology - or someone making Anonymous look bad on purpose, but Feds it ain't.

Watching the "open source" video on this missile lodged another thought in my head:  Could the proposed cuts backs in funding for DOD be placing this contractor on a "wait list?"

Could the cut backs in funding cause this contractor to start marketing elsewhere? It sure looked like a marketing video to me.  Last thing we need is to let US offensive technology go overseas, and be used against us in the future-- All because the folks in DC want to play politics.

Don't get me wrong, there is WAY too much spending in government, but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Aside from that being a purely ingenius technological skull-stomp of awesomeness, this kind of press release boggles the mind. I mean, sure, we've known about the effects of an electromagnetic pulse since the first nukes were tested. Man-sized EMPs, if they did exist, were mythical and only in movies (either Ocean's 11, 12 or 13, I believe). One could safely assume we have the capabilities to make one, but seriously, things like this need to stay in the 'mythical closet.'  The only reason I can think of for companies like Boeing to release or leak this stuff is to get their stock price to move. I'm all for making money, but releasing your latest tech at the expense of national security is over the top. Its not like they won't already get a boat load of money for the government contract. I don't know. If there's something I'm missing, I could be way off target, but at first read that's how I see it.

Old PH2

@Tango9  @LauraWalkerKC  @Contagio Think of a man portable EMP in a situation like Mumbai.  All First responders that get close to the incident area would loose comms/video.  Very attractive tech for a Non governmental entity.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
