Brandon

I had a bad dream. If I shoot in the dark with an BTR 80, shift on a stretcher and carried under the lights KamAZ. Tilt truck is placed next to the road. People bustling around. Hands were somehow in rubber gloves. And they are in a hurry wearing white robes and asking outsiders not to interfere.

Leaning over me doctor shakes his head and says something to the nurse. I have to health van. I feel the smell of damp earth and sharp, bitter – blood. On a nearby APC 80 are still as frozen body. Next to the armor soldiers froze in silence.

- What do you stand as driven! – Doctor yells at them. – Help the medics! The soldiers moved, surrounded BTR 80 taking your hands sorrowful burden. Narrow strips of light from the darkness snatch “cargo 200″ with terrible injuries. One in the eye socket swollen huge bloody flower. My view though sticks to it. Finally at will shift focus on the living.

I suddenly want to drink vodka unbearable. Not eating. The brain for a moment disconnected from the realities of combat …

And then I woke up in a tent, which was spreading shaking under the pressure of the cold wind. Felt for himself, with a sigh of relief: unharmed, wounded only imagined. But only wounded, but otherwise sleep one to one duplicated hot events in which I was involved.

A memory continued to torment the soul, returning again and again to yesterday’s day …

A special operation in the village Komsomolsk decided to be repeated due to unforeseen circumstances. Early in the morning of 6 March, a group of rebels led by Ruslan Gelayev “Black Angel” came down from the mountains towards the village. Redoubt spotted movement of bandits and fired them. By refusing to fight, “militants” stormed the Komsomol. Village immediately blocked. Previously planned operation in Alkhazurovo was canceled, all units relocated to the northern edge of Komsomolsk.

7.45. Looking at the village at that hour of the morning, can hardly believe that the bandits can be there. Are they stupid, suicidal? Here are pulled formidable force from the south take the position units of the Ministry of Defence, begin shelling southern end.

Couple MI 24, going in circles, shoot missiles outs of Komsomolsk and foothills. Somewhere out there shuddering earth.

8.00. Helicopters leave the base. At the direction of the village sent two APCs 80 scouts. Their work largely depends on the success the operation to destroy the “wolves” Gelayev.

Local people leave their homes. Old men, women, children, men – all in a hurry to get out in good time, dragging various belongings. They were taken to a safe place where people can ride out the peaceful fight.

8.50. Special forces are concentrated on the road leading to the Komsomol. All ready to begin operation.

9.00. Sounds welcome the team. Here we go. The road turns right. In front of a narrow little bridge. Clicking fuses soldiers and officers pass by him on foot. Assault “Bravo 1″, “Bravo 2″, “Bravo 3″ and “bravo 4″ spread out in their areas.

“Thunder” – “Bravo 2″: “Up to the first intersection – go ahead”. Following the “Bravo 2″ instructions are commanders of other groups for special purposes.

Operators are moving quickly. Inspect the home – if only there were no people. Yesterday there already cleaned out.

9.40. Were fixed at the second intersection. I’m going with a group of “Bravo 1″. “Thunder” receives reports from team leaders and indicates the next frontier – the third intersection. If I know in advance that it will be followed …

9.50. All four buildings at the intersection of the men sat down, “Bravo 3″. On the radio reported that to our “UAZ” move truce. The militants have agreed to negotiate the extradition of four captive soldiers.

Arrives “UAZ”. Three Chechen unshaven with a white flag officers are asked to accompany them to the reference point. Fear that not shoot, taking the bandits. “Go yourself. We warned by radio stations will not touch you, “- said the commander. Now he can not be distracted from the management actions of the detachment.

9.55. Groups are beginning to move from the circulating abroad – the third crossing to the edge of Komsomolsk. And here begins. All along the line – right, left and center – “militants” fired from rifles, machine guns and grenade launchers. Works sniper. All sat down. Who fours, who rushes away under cover of the iron gates. Noise of battle grows

10.10. I can not see what is happening on the left flank of the “Bravo 2″. I hear only: there too hot! Ether like mad. Of the radio station “Thunder” rush alarming reports one another. Even as we approach the third crossing operators met his group of civilians who did not manage to leave the village. They warned rebels in the right house. As it turned out, only in this one building on the left flank against the operators put trunks 24 “jihadist”. This, you see, not a trifle. Still hotter had “Bravo 1″.

“Red” – call the commander “Bravo 1″. With him a group comprised sixteen. When they came to the third crossing “red” left behind a slave, and the four operators came forward.

In the second house “Red” discovered prepared emplacement – 7.62 mm PKM barrel looking out. The militants, who had not expected rapid emergence of military, hiding on the second floor.

After taking a comfortable position, the operators were ready to meet with the rebels, who hurried down to the first floor. In minutes, eight militants were riddled with bursts. From this point on the right wing broke brutal battle.

Crossroads tight shell out all kinds of automatic weapons and RPGs. Resist the vastly superior forces of the Islamists was extremely difficult. But the brave quartet for an hour did not leave the house captured. Hold the line, not allowing the militants to move to the intersection.

Ozverev audacity of our soldiers and their losses, the bandits have focused the brunt of the house, where there was four “Red.” After intense fire from grenade launchers to remain in the building was not possible. House was in ruins.

Worked with the group “Bravo1″ SWAT, hitting a fire bag, crawled to a field outside the village and lay in a shallow ditch. Seeing that patrol operators got into serious trouble, they began to shout, “red”, “waste to us! ‘ll Cover! “Yes, it was the only chance. Go back to the crossroads a more expensive, can be run over by a fire in the rear of the entrenched “jihadists.”

Lt. “Red” made the decision to break the fighters SWAT. That rotation guys jumped from the second floor and rushed to the ditch. But they could not reach. Militants sweep virtually every meter, had to lie down in the open … None of the watch is no longer up. Killed and several other subordinate “Red” from among those who took the fight at the intersection, failing to run into the house.

Now listen with bated breath. “Thunder” – “” Red, “”, “You waste” – “I can not yet …” This relationship with the lieutenant broke.

10.20. “Thunder” reports “White Eagle” – the head of the operation, that the detachment encountered fierce resistance on all fronts. Required reserves. Especially on the right flank.

10.40. shooting does not stop for a second. Operators are looking at me like I was abnormal. They shoot, and I’m just bonkers noshus with Ak 74. Well, let them think what they want.

11.15. “Thunder” – “Bravo 3″: “You went to the third crossing” – “I’m trying to …” BTR 80 slowly creeping back to the third intersection. The faces of the soldiers are concentrated, evil. Every other word – curse. Bullets whistle and pick ground nearby. Not to go to sweep all round the street, the men doing a passage in the fence and go to the next house. BTR 80 slowly moves back down the street. Turret gun shooting long bursts. But the fire on us continues unabated. Next court did not pass – a stone wall. Operators throw smoke grenades area streets. In caustic mist scamper up to the third intersection. Heart ready to jump out of my chest. An hour passed from the time we started to move forward from here. Hour, flashed a moment!

11.50. Round defense. “Thunder”, crouching, ran along the fence on the right flank, to the place where you can be seen as “Nazar” is trying to come to the aid of a group of “Red.” Get to it still fails. Forty meters “hits” have undermined our BTR80. I had to go away again. “Allah Akbar! Says Black Angel “- someone alive radio. – Allah will punish you with my own hands! Alive not you all go away. “

12.00. We sit in one of the four houses at the intersection. The firing continued. On the walls looking surprised bullets over the heads sweep tracers. We try not to stick out unnecessarily. Again sniper shoots, leaves no attempts to get one of us.

Radio does not stop at the colonel leads. It keeps track of the airwaves, ready for action on the first order of the commander. “Thunder” – “Nazar”, “You’re standing behind me. Tighten, BTR leave in place. “

13.45. “Thunder” sent us “Skipper” This is still a single statement from the band “Red”, which under the cover of a smoke screen managed to get out of fire. “Skipper” was tangential wound to the head and arm. Medic has put his bandage. All surrounded sergeant interested to know what is happening on the right.

17.00. “Thunder” – “White Eagle”: “We started to negotiate the exchange on my side. Ask your fire! “

Envoys from the elders and the local administration went gardens. “Jihadists” do not want to erase all memories of the BTR 80. “Black Angel” wished to negotiate only with the “Thunder.”

“Thunder” – “Bravo 2″: “Up to the first intersection – go ahead”. Following the “Bravo 2″ instructions are commanders of other groups for special purposes.

Operators are moving quickly. Inspect the home – if only there were no people. Yesterday there already cleaned out.

Envoys from the elders and the local administration went gardens. “Jihadists” do not want to erase all memories of the BTR 80. “Black Angel” wished to negotiate only with the “Thunder.”

Conditions such. First, cease fire. Second, during the exchange of “Thunder” to stand on the road fifty meters from insurgents and under their eye on the case, if the first condition is violated. Third, four SOF operator during the exchange are in the position militants until they take away his. “Thunder” these conditions are accepted. Although, as I learned later, the CP to its solution treated ambiguously. There was a real threat to capture four more hostages BTR80 to boot.

17.10. Began sharing.

17.30. From somewhere on the left began to shoot. Militants not lost his nerve. APC by 80 fired an RPG. Fortunately, not included. “Thunder” was standing stock still, his whole appearance indicating that the shooting on the left is irrelevant. After a few minutes the firing ceased. Tension eased.

17.40. The wounded were sent to the CP. BTR 80 back again – this time for “Cargo 200″. After that, it was the turn of militants. Only one house, where the operators struggled Lieutenant “Red”, “jihadists” took six bodies and eleven wounded. At the direction of action of the “Bravo 3″ found another eight dead. The losses were in the depth of the defense fighters is not known. But judging by the cries that came from the radio station, killed them there a lot. Later in the afternoon to begin a withdrawal of all participants Komsomolsk raid.

19.00. – 20.00. Dark. Doctors working in the headlights KamAZ. To some of the wounded inject anesthetic, make the dressing. Some help is not required. I walk between the bodies of those killed. Priest Andrew who always was with the soldiers in “Bravo 3″, reads the prayer for the dying dead and pray for the healing of the wounded. Aside silence is not very tall men.

Night in a tent field commander of the special forces raised for all of the fallen a third-toast … and there were still nearly two weeks of fighting for Komsomolsk.

@JHR in general it was a mistake to lead the assault of the command without causing air strike, helicopters poorly operated and used only immediately before the assault. At the end of the assault two weeks after the events, the village ceased to exist, everything was destroyed, according to estimates of funeral teams destroyed more than 1,500 Islamists

@Surf375  @jrexilius heh Surf, I defer to you as well. I don't think I have better info. than you, just different. Thats what makes a great stew and some aweome thoughts and discussions.

Hez mixes it up with everyone. They may do so at arms length, but they are the "A" game and they will :ring it". Their serious attack planning began inn earnst last year. AQ 1.0-2.0 was just the pre-show.

As far as your comment  " I'm hard press to see Wahhabist/Salafists/Islamists, mixing it up with others," I think it would be prudent to look at the changes, splinters and offshoots of these groups from 2008 through today. For example:

diversified and complicated ideologically and religiously motivations amongst these groups make them prime recipients to work with any group who can assist in either A)gaining momentum for their progect B) ammassing power or C)completing even a short term goal project/strike/agenda.

W/S/I mix as you mentioned actually share some theological and intellectual doctrines, yet  they are theologically and politically very different, perhaps vastly so today comapred to even 5 years ago. This again, is an example which leaves the door open for alliances with groups one might never have imagined they would comply with.

I know that some folks are absolutely detested by others, yet business is conducted between them for mutual benefit.

"What is viewed as a "Salafist" movement will not look the same in 5-10 years. The momentum gaining is a melting pot that was truly stirred up between 1953-1956 with this movement and ideology and passion for violence. In other words, its going to "mix up" more, differently and in ways not expected. We are seeing the beginning of this with the partnerships (cartels, thais, boyz, triangle, etc.). I am not set on salafists as "the movement", "the ideology", I think you know that I feel this way. I see a broader picture. More later. J"

I'll defer to you on this, since you have better info here. Although I can see Hizbollah and Iran mixing it up, I'm hard press to see Wahhabist/Salafists/Islamists, mixing it up with others.

China w/ Shias and Sunnis, now that's a fun mix, we're seeing them beginning to get cozy via Pakistan--they don't need to get close to them, just fund them. Reminds me of that James Lilley quote on PBS about how China does business differently.

@Surf375  @jrexilius I see your point exactly and I believe many are thinking along the same lines as you.

Its my opinion that the Shiites have been underestimated. I listed their geographic movements as one tactical point, I believe their intentions are not only to form partnerships with Sunni and others, but also to position themselves in a place of power and in a manner to strike. Their movements over the past 30 years have shown this intention.

In otherwords, I believe they have more power and have been underestimated, despite their low population numbers. I feel they are greatly underestimated. I think others have thought of this as well, as intel reports bring up this possibility. This will be an interesting Jihad on so many levels, that is set to last another 20 years as we are only just done with the first 10.

Who's the influential scholar you had in mind?

Although I agree that proper concern should be given to the Shi'as, I'm of the thought that whatever their endeavors, they'd be easy to deal with because of their hierarchal nature.

the Salafist tide seem more interesting to me, however, although now there seems to be a consensus, the process from which this agreement travelled through in the past century and before, stuff like Rida'a al-Kabir, etc. and how the Sunni "ummah" as a whole coalesced, to me that's the stuff of interest--I'm thinking along the lines of reverse engineering here, for us.

I'm a big fan of TX Hammes' reading list on Emergence, Chaos and leaderless organizations, so the Salafi tide fits that interest.

@Surf375@Andrew Boldyrev@jrexilius

I used the term embedded as a loose term that could be considered palatable  in this thread. I am not a journalist. Pre 9/11 and post 9/11 experience. I hear  much talk about salafists, yet I hold a different perspective. Although Sunnis  are the majority populus, with Shiite holding 10-13% of the population- Both  groups have radicals elements, they  are working together, bonded and I  think Salifist is not the term I would choose when talking about these growing and splintering  terrorist cells. Especially, with the partnerships formed and  the intermingled ideologies and goals, albeit they have  a common thread.

Although this conflict  started 1300 years ago, many of these cells can  be traced backed to ideologies presented in the early 1950's by a certain  influential scholar. Just My Opinion.

Another point that trumps a strictly salafist focus for current conflicts, is the fact of the Shiite geographic movements over the past 30+ years. Pentagon realizes this, perhaps too late. Shiites have positioned themselves surrounding major Sunni heavily populated areas in a formation that would allow for a strategic attack and mass reduction in Sunni populations. These movements are astounding when looked at on a map. Brilliant, well thought out, strategic and tactical. So, This is where I am coming from with emphasis on Salafists reports. I give more credence to a greater objective viewpoint, involving factors more complex than Salafist perspective.

Surf: You and @jrexilius can count me in as someone that is more interested as well in this subject. My background in relation to this: is that I became embedded with an Islamic Fundamentalist for a few years prior to 9/11. What I learned and witnessed from that experience gives me a different perspective on this war. Namely, in resepect to the strong religious and cultural aspects that I came to learn about which seem to be lost or so "foreign" to our military and even COIN procedures. If we do not get a grasp/handle on these, COIN will fail.

Great, really great, stuff, man. Thank you for writing this. On so many different levels, it covered so much.

Just one question, and this is from a wider angle: Our CT, and by extension COIN, have been predicated mostly on our ignorance of fighting the Muslims. The only history we really have (or can summon) of fighting them is when Pres. Jefferson sent a contingent of Marines in the early 1800s, led by a banished Army officer, to foment a coup of brother against brother in Tripoli AND then during the Moro insurrection of Mindanao in the early 1900s, there we pitted one noble class against another largely via education.

Those two instances, we never had to deal head on with Islamic ideas nor their procreators. I know the Russians via the Tartars, etc. you guys have dealt again and again w/ competing ideas vis-a-vis Islam. I was wondering if the Russians have developed a soft CT approach against Islamic terrorism.

I know many Muslim countries have come up with their own "soft" approach ie KSA, Malaysia & Indonesia, I'd especially like to know what Russia's would look like, since you guys have played w/ ideas relating to revamped Muslim ideas before, ie, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jadidism

Thanks. There are quite a number of us here, really interested in the more nuanced fight against this scourge, and looking into history, world history, in an attempt to offer actionable ideas, both short and long term. @jrexilius and I are just a few.

@JHR Egyptian Ayman Zawahiri has a long history in the radical Islamic movement. As a teenager he joined in Cairo by the Egyptian authorities banned organization "Muslim Brotherhood." Egyptian security services have begun to collect information on Zawahiri, when he was 16 years old. He graduated from Cairo University and received his doctorate. In the 80's Dr. Zawahiri went to Afghanistan, where he worked in a hospital for the wounded in battles with the Soviet army. He was arrested after the murder of members of the "Muslim Brotherhood" Anwar Sadat, although the involvement of Zawahiri was not proven. The American newspaper The Wall Street Journal wrote in 2004, that for three years in prison Zawahiri make new contacts among jihadists, and its vzgyada become more intransigent. Islamists said they tortured Zawahiri testified at his friends. After his release, he again went to the jihad in Afghanistan. In the early 90's, Ayman Zawahiri, officially headed the organization "Egyptian Jihad." Under his leadership been violent attacks against civilians. Because of the persecution of Egypt, he first went to Sudan, which also was exiled, and found refuge in Saudi Arabia. In three years as the head of the Egyptian Jihad al-Zawahiri was alone - without the support and supporters. In search of new allies and prospects he traveled extensively around the world. In December 1996, Zawahiri accompanied by two Egyptians and a local guide was detained by Russian customs officers in the Dagestani town of Derbent. In a false passport in the name of a citizen of Sudan who have withdrawn from Zawahiri, had visa Yemen, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, the Russian visa in their passports Egyptians were not. We arrested customs officers seized documents and computer equipment, all this gave the FSB. The laptop was sent to Moscow for examination. In April 1997, the court released Makhachkala Zawahiri. According to intelligence reports, the Egyptian doctor had gone immediately, but held in the Caucasus for another two weeks, meeting with the leaders of local Islamists and the possibility of cooperation in the future. Zawahiri later wrote of the North Caucasus as a very promising for the "Al Qaeda" region: "The conditions there is impeccable."

@JHR The loss of the Russian troops were considerable. In the period 6-22 March killed more than 60 soldiers and members of other law enforcement agencies, about 200 were wounded. Such losses were due to complete lack of intelligence in the initial stage of the operation and unprofessional actions of command, the tactics of attrition and annihilation of militants in street battles, with full opportunity to the scrapping of the 90 per cent of the powerful forces of militant means of fire damage. These funds should be used only as an auxiliary force, instead of giving them the primary role in the development of the operation.

@Andrew Boldyrev Lessons were learned from this fight? This is Good.

I was wondering, have the Jihadis resurfaced anywhere in Russia? If so, where?

I know Russia is still dealing with this issue and China has their hands full as well.

I know they fear Russians. Example: when the Iranian hostage situation occurred- Russian Ambassadors were picked up by Terrorists, then let go on a street corner when they were discovered to be Russian. This is an old story, I am not sure it is true.I remember talking to one of the Russians about this.

Andrew, I've been reading the book from Gen. Troshev it takes  awhile since I'm not a Russian speaker but using various methods I've been reading a page or two a day and I find it worth every effort!  Thank you again, that bloody war was something straight out of the Great Patriotic War.  Christ, I kept thinking of things I'd read about the partisan fighting on the Soviet Front.  All I can say is be strong, it's good to see Patriots from all nations, fighting for the people of their Homeland!

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
