preparing to deploy to Tehran to train the Iranian Special Forces troops there. In the late 50s and early 60s (back when Iran was a staunch ally of the United States), we deployed a MAAG (Military Assistance Advisory Group) to assist with their SOF and air warfare capabilities. (There were more than one MAAG deployed at the time, most of them in Southeast Asia as the various hot spots in Indochina began to heat up.) In many ways, it’s a precursor to MACV-SOG. MAAG/Iran actually began during WWII, but increased dramatically in size during the Cold War, culminating in a Bilateral Defense Agreement between the US and Iran. MAAG/Iran became ARMISH-MAAG Iran, for United States Army Mission Headquarters Military Assistance Advisory Group Iran. US Air Force and Army special operations advisors remained until the Islamic revolution during the Carter administration. More than one of the Iranian military personnel you see in this video were executed, some tortured and executed, by the mullahs during the “revolution”. Others disappeared.
