Happy New Year From SOFREP

Hi everyone, we’re almost at our one year anniversary point, but with close to a 1000 posts and millions of visitors it feels much longer than that!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone in the U.S. and abroad (30% of our traffic comes from offshore) for all your support. 2013 will be a great year, and we will continue to tackle tough issues (typically not covered by mainstream media) as they relate to the Military/Spec Ops community.  We are also adding some great blog properties to the SOFREP network and we’ll have some exciting new partnerships to announce soon.

I also want to take a moment to thank all of our contributing editors, 99% of them have served in a military/SOF capacity. They continue to leverage years of expertise to provide you with a perspective and interpretation on current events that can’t be learned in journalism school, only through experience.

Thank you again, and have a great New Year!

Brandon, Editor

Happy NEW Year, SOFREP!!!

There's a new site up: http://www.ingloriousamateurs.com

It's run by ex-CIA officers, there's only 3 articles so far, but looks promising, let's give them our support and kick off 2013 for them. Thanks!

I know I'm late in sending New Year's wishes, but have been hunkered down the last couple of days.  I wish for you all love and laughter in the new year.   SOFREP has been a delight that has engaged, challenged, and enfolded me.  I have learned, shared, laughed, grown and healed through the words and thoughts shared here.  So, many thanks to Brandon, Jack, the crew and the elves, and of course, to the people who so generously comment, some of whom have become very dear to me.   I don't know what 2013 will bring for me..so the adventure begins and I may go wandering with Bilbo Baggins.

@BrandonWebb  You're welcome but no thanks necessary.  You and your team deserve all the credit and "glory" :)

I truly hope the site continues fulfilling its SOF specific mission of educating the public and sharing info not found anywhere else.  I wish there was one that did the same for the conventional side.  Heck, I'd like to be part of the effort.

SOFREP has also done an outstanding job of allowing passionate debate while clamping down on trolls.  I have seen other sites destroyed by trolls or the political slant of the editor (military.com).

It's only been a year and I'm sure it's exhausting at times.  I hope you can maintain what you created.

Happy New Year Brandon! I am loving my new RESCO Red Circle GMT! The people at RESCO are the best yet. (The trouble is now I also have my eye on the Bullfrog!) My GMT is number 22. John did say that these watches were addictive.

It was well worth the wait. The watch looked so much better than the pictures. I am looking forward to receiving my personalized cover jacket. The Pelican case that comes with the watch rocks the whole package. You guys really came up with a great design. Looking forward to seeing what you guys bring to the New Year. A very Happy New Year to all of the other contributors at SOFREP.

@VP31DET They are addictive. Glad you like the watch! We'll get those cover jackets out ASAP. -B

@VP31DET Hey there.. I have GMT#23 from RESCO on 24DEC, so it made the holidays better already.  My watch came with an Underwater Kinetics case, not a Pelican.  And the UK case was labeled as Patriot not as Red CircleGMT.   So I am still happy with the GMT watch, there is some wiggle room to be addressed.

I am still happy to see who got the watch before I did..

BrandonWebb
BrandonWebb moderator 5pts

@That Sailor  @VP31DET Be sure to tell John at RESCO about the cases. Glad you like the watch though.

VP31DET
VP31DET 5pts

@That Sailor You are correct and I stand corrected, the case is an Underwater Kinetics case and I also had the case labeled as Patriot not as Red Circle  GMT. I to received my watch on 24 DEC. I am curious what you meant by the "wiggle room" comment. Was this about performance of the watch?

BrandonWebb
BrandonWebb moderator 5pts

@That Sailor The Red Circle is green is a proto type. We had to have a min order quantity of 300 watches but only wanted to make 215 RC GMT's. We're not sure if we'll go with the RC-Tac or not but they will be very limited if we do (as you noted).

VP31DET
VP31DET 5pts

@That Sailor Your points are well made. Yes, the other Red Circle did take me by surprise. But in the end I am happy with my purchase and I just might purchase a sterile Bullfrog. Thanks for the comments!

That Sailor
That Sailor 5pts

I certainly wasn't happy that there was another Red Circle in green and t seem to be more exclusive than our watch being numbered 1-85. And that you can have similar watches such as a Christopher Ward Trident GMTwith ETA2893-2 for under $800.00. Or even an Steinhart GMT with the same movement for.under $400. So I am happy with the performance of the watch itself. Exclusivity and price needs work. Would I purchase another RESCO?? Sure, I would love to have a sterile Gen1 Patriot with a reversed bezel where the numbers are SS and the rest of the bezel is.black.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
