Jack, and I (and a few mafia) are hitting the SHOT show hard this week. SOFREP will mainly focus on industry trends as it relates to the Military/Spec Ops community.  We hit the media range day today, it was pretty anti-climatic as there was nothing new or meaningful on the firing line. The only novelty item that is sure to be banned soon (IMO, get them while you can) is the SlideFire

We launched two new sites this week.

NavySEALs.com

TheArmsGuide.com

Check’em out and let us know what you think via comments below.

Many of you have also inquired about LoadoutRoom, for now it’s down due to some confidential trademark issues. It looks like we’ll have successfully navigated these hurdles, and we expect LOR to be up and running in the next few weeks so stand by.

In the meantime please give us your feedback on the above sites, thanks for your support, and look forward to this week’s SHOT show updates!

Enjoy the ride-

Brandon, Editor.

just as a historical note, during the late War for SOuthern Independence, bayonets wounds counted for less than about 4 % of all battlefield wounds. It was used more commonly as a cooking utensil, 'hole or rifle pit digger' or even as a candle holder

@majrod On day 2 of SHOT there were loads of hippie media around.  You could spot them.  This doesn't surprise me in the least.  This is why the SHOT team stopped accepting media applications right after the sandy hook shootings:  it'd be a circus of dumbassery.

Rassmussen survey that's helpful next time you run into an anti 2nd amendment nut.

"Not surprisingly, 72% of those with a gun in their family regard the Second Amendment as a protection against tyranny. However, even a majority (57%) of those without a gun in their home hold that view."

Comes in handy to crush the premise that the 2nd amendment is about hunting or self defense.

@majrod Additionally, most people misunderstand the phrase "well regulated" in the 2d.  It doesn't mean subject to regulation, in the time and context of its writing, it meant well trained and/or disciplined.

This isn't a reference per say, but this is a video Quin posted as part of the latest Chairborne Commandos Radio show about the Battle for Athens TN in 1946, where the veterans armed themselves to take back an election the corrupt officials were trying to steal.

@majrod "The phrase "well-regulated" was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight of the people's arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the founders wrote it."

If anyone is looking for a lively anti 2nd amendment "debate" check out this one (Warning: It will piss you off).

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2013/01/16/does_the_nra_want_to_turn_america_into_afghanistan

The article starts with the author creating a strawman that we're becoming another Afghanistan and the goes downhill.  It's entertaining to see how ignorant those who consider themselves intellectual elites are about many basic facts as it applies to the 2nd Amendment.

@majrod What really raised my blood pressure was the comment section of that FP article!  I live in Los Angeles and I hear lots of left-wing blathering coming from clowns in their Che Guevara t-shirts.  Do they not remember the  Los Angeles riots of 1992?   They have no idea how important a weapon is when the LAPD can't  service 911 calls.  Lots of fools in this city and we have (hands-down) one of the stupidest mayors you will ever meet.   The majority of our firearm deaths are due to gang activity and I could care less about those insects but I need to keep them away from my quiet corner here!  There is no excuse for the state of our liberal-run cities and it has nothing to do with the Second Ammendment or gun enthusiasts and everything to do with the bone-head civic leaders and these silly coffee-house intellectuals..

@ClownPatrol  @majrod Nevermind the riots in '92 but the Watts Riots were the real record setters in my view. Either way, the idea that confiscating weapons or restricting the ability/means by which a citizen has to defend their person is ludicrous and I honestly feel that that is putting it mildly!

Anyone have the definition/reference of "militia" that a poster shared on SOFREP weeks ago?

Specifically that the militia is everyone not just the national guard or uniformed personnel?

hjw1dr
hjw1dr 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@majrod   The right for individuals to bear arms was to make sure the population was armed in order to overthrow a tyrannical government.

At its core, gun-control is about submission, not crime.

Some historical, foundational commentary:

George Mason, principle author behind the Bill of Rights, advised, “What is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials.” Later Mason clarified, “A well-regulated militia, composed of the Gentlemen, Freeholders, and other Freemen was necessary to protect our ancient laws and liberty from the standing army.” Bearing arms remains an inalienable “right of the people.” Mason wanted each man to suitably furnish for himself weaponry, supplies and training.

James Madison articulated a foundational principle informing our Constitution, “All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree.” Proper suspicion of political authority remains pivotal to America’s lasting liberty. Madison later noted in Federalist 46, “Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, …” Madison considered decentralized government and gun rights as the essential checks against despotic rulers.

The Second Amendment provides a final redoubt guarding what remains of the other freedoms enumerated in the Bill of Rights. Or, as Harald Zieger, an émigré from behind the Iron Curtain, neatly summarizes, “America is the greatest nation on earth because it’s the only one with a First Amendment. We’re the only nation with a First Amendment because we’re the only one with a Second Amendment.”

A well-armed citizenry erects a necessary buttress against tyranny.

@LauraKinCA  @majrod  Thanks Majrod. Wow...What a thoroughly silly, rambling argument this guy goes on about in that article. He starts by describing his own drunken youth (which makes me wonder if he was drunk when he wrote the article), draws an illogical parallel to Afghanistan (is he saying that NRA advocates are tribal?) and then goes into a confused rant that American culture isn't violent enough to justify guns-- unlike Afghanistan's need for guns due to the "realpolitik" of the place.  (see how smart he is? He can use big words! )

He then suggests American cuture has never solved problems with guns... uhm... and so what?  (If you follow that logic, then doesn't that mean guns are not a factor because gun ownership has not affected resolution of civil problems?)

where does this guy live?  He should try living in inner city Chicago... try taking a jog at 10 PM along the south-side and see how far he gets. Or better yet, go to El Paso. He can linger along the highway, and watch a few stray bullets hit the walls of elementary schools in the US, from gun fights on both sides of the border.

@HugeFan  When McCrystal first started making the scene I was impressed by his credentials.  That brightness quickly dimmed as I listened to what he said/did.

The ROE restrictions he put in place in Afghanistan were ridiculous and politically dictated.  The Rolling Stone incident portrayed a frat house atmosphere.  His book interviews featured a kid glove approach to current policy.  When he came down in favor of gun control the coffin was already nailed shut for me.  The guy's a politician with his finger in the air figuring out which direction the wind is blowing.  America has had enough of that.

@majrod  @hjw1dr  @LauraKinCA Gen. McChrystal didn't do a whole lot for the 2nd Amendment when he was interviewed by Jon Stewart. I was actually pretty dismayed by what he said.

We were told as a nation that there would be a "discussion" and that it was "time" to have it. I was cool with that, I mean let's talk. Right? Instead, less than a month later some states are stepping on their own dicks banning this and restricting that and then the POTUS comes out with these "decrees" (READ: executive orders) that infringe upon a citizen's 2nd Amendment right. Where and when did this "discussion" take place? Were any of called? Apparently, I missed the meeting. The condescension on behalf of the gun control lobby is palpable.

Sheriffs, State Lawmakers Push Back on Gun Control

Thursday, 17 Jan 2013

From Oregon to Mississippi, President Barack Obama's proposed ban on new assault weapons and large-capacity magazines struck a nerve among rural lawmen and lawmakers, many of whom vowed to ignore any restrictions — and even try to stop federal officials from enforcing gun policy in their jurisdictions.

"A lot of sheriffs are now standing up and saying, 'Follow the Constitution,'" said Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson, whose territory covers the timbered mountains of southwestern Oregon.

@Contagio  @Recon6 I think leather is a superb option for deep carry or concealed carry.  Kydex doesnt bend or budge one bit no matter how ell broken in it is whereas leather is a different story.   The rigidity of kydex my make it a nuisance for concealed carry depending on the positioning and the persons stature.

@Recon6  @BLACK01  @Contagio Thats a good nugget right there.  SOB carry allows one to access the pistol right or left handed too.

It takes a bit of practice but the ambi capability makes it worth it.    For CCW, I would say SOB carry is the most discreet and most practical considering the whole idea behind it that people arent supposed to see that shit and "printing" is a sure as shit way to show all your cards.

@momengineer Agree. A lot of the proposed laws are just knee-jerk reactions to mass shootings. Stricter laws do not lead to fewer incidents. Actually, most of the incidents happen in states that have the toughest gun laws. However, I have no problem with a background check as long as I don't have to fork over $ to get it (just like if I apply for a credit card, I don't have to pay for a credit check). But you can turn almost any object into an assault weapon--heck, I can turn my 5" stiletto heels into a weapon--LOL. I do have an issue with limiting what kind of guns a person can purchase. If someone has a clean record, why shouldn't he or she be allowed to buy what they want? Most of the people I know who own firearms own them for personal protection. My brother in law is one of the few I know who also has rifles for hunting.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
