Americans and Other Foreigners Taken Hostage in Algeria Terror Attack

Americans Taken Hostage in Algeria Terror Attack
Just hours ago a bus carrying foreign workers from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and other nations was attacked by armed insurgents right outside of the In Amenes natural gas complex located near the Libyan border.

The attack occurred between 5:00 and 6:00am local time in Algeria (around midnight this morning of the 16th – East Coast time). The facility is a joint venture operated by British Petroleum (BP), Norway’s Statoil and the Algerian state company, Sonatrach.

According to the Algerian interior ministry, a heavily armed group using three vehicles attacked the bus. An Algerian security unit repelled the attack which resulted in the death of one foreign national and the wounding of six personnel. The armed insurgents immediately took off for the living quarters at the gas complex and took almost 40 people hostage.

  • Two foreigners are believed to have been killed – one Briton and one Frenchman
  • Seven others were wounded in the attack and an estimated 40 foreigners are believed to have been taken hostage – up to three of which are reported to be American citizens.
  • A group known as the Katibat Moulathamine, or Masked Brigade, called a Mauritanian news outlet claiming the attack by one of their subsidiaries: a splinter organization calling itself “Those Who Signed in Blood”.
  • The facility held workers from the UK, United States, Japan, Norway, Algeria, and France
  • It is currently unknown if the terrorists are still at the gas complex or if they retreated with the hostages.

This cluster of a situation most likely has stemmed from France’s recent deployment of combat troops to Mali, which shares an 855 mile long border with Algeria.

Whew-much better using a key board then the iphone-everything seems to be up and running again.Anyway-

yes, my point exactly.Remember when considering the Marines responses the extreme circumstances of the Pacific campaign...Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Kwajalain, Bougainville, Betio ,Iwo ,Okinawa etc, and using week old USMC corpses for cover while securing beach headheads ,and following up into what passes for hinterlands -you realize where they came by their rage of "nonchalance". Probably every man involved in the " neck deep" stuff, carried it to his dying day, it is the worst for the good guys without a doubt.Where do we come by this? It is in our genes -(every swingin one of us, an the non swingin as well;)!!), wired deep into the fight/ flight instincts we all have but rarely access for the most part(...excepting some of the .45%).The rest of our brain has evovled to the point of rationalization and reason-but the basic wiring that has allowed us to survive as a species, despite our comparative physical weaknesses. It may seem fucked up to our rational minds, in our immediate context- but its why we are still here.

@ChupaCabra @Recon6 @Txazz While it may belong in another thread, it makes a good comparison to then and now.Torture then, atrocities then, make MOST of the latest "atrocities" pale in comparison.I could not direct you to the right thread in particular-but it would definitely be something to illustrate the differences in how the world perceives

things(say as "waterboarding", the JOKE of "torture " of Abu Ghraib-why I bet some SOB withheld a prayer mat at the pit of sin Gitmo Bay, better known now just Gitmo or Guantonimo, because "bay "just snatches the ominous overtones right away , doesn't it??They do have good mangoes though!). Excuse my humor here- because what you refer to is big time vicious hardcore bad on a scale we can't conceive of today-so I have to interject some humor in reference to the media now, to keep from goin all "fire in the hole"!!!LOL. Everyone thinks the world is going to shit, compared to "yesterday", well MORE of it is going to shit comparatively, because our population has exponentially exploded-BUT-the depth of the shit has lessened considerably(except of course when it comes to politics;)!!!!).This bums the media out....but the media has transformed as well, at on time they actually rooted for the good guys.

@ChupaCabra @Allwet @Txazz CC, the irony is definitely not lost on me. Perhaps the difference is merely that 'everything' now appears instantly via social media and comms, Each instant of 'anything' someone considers worthy is transmitted worldwide Now. The military's apathy, even viciousness by our own, would instantly bring punishment today. Hell, I'm certainly glad I was not restrained by the ROE's of today's troops, I wouldn't be here. You mentioned 'teeth', I have previously mentioned 'ears', and could have cared less,' don't mean nothin' was our mantra. I did however, stop at rape, but that is a story for camp....6

@Recon6  @StormR  @ChupaCabra  @Allwet  @Txazz Hmmm-I for one withold judgement here, most of the knowledge for me, comes from the media-who ,without a second thought of conscious remorse , with turn a satan into a saint , and Mother Theresa into a .....well you get the point. I for one , need to be redlined with regularity to maintain sanity-if you are too fucking tired, you can't go crazy, or would that be going sane?Something snapped, and what it was, will never come to light.Heads will shake knowingly according to what ever is the adopted agenda of the moment...."see, just like we said", and the sheep will roll with it, because it is the easiest thing to do.Why is it that the all knowing , are always those that have never done, and never will....and yet no one questions the judgements passed. The answer isn't "blowing in the wind" , its in standing against the storm.

Madigan Hospital at JBLM has a horrific record as relates to PTSD, and JBLM itself has had a number of breakdowns.  There are a number of factors that I'm sure you would understand better than me.  When it became a combined base, there was no 'central' leader as such.  All the focus was on troop deployment and not operation.  That issue was only corrected a few months ago.  With the strykers and units being transferred to JBLM, the base grew fast, fast and frankly, it wasn't prepared.  Deployment troops are also moving in and out really fast - and you have to add in the National Guard to the mix.  It's been a cluster-you-know-what since the combine.  Sen. Patty Murray & Rep. Norm Dicks have pushed and pushed for answers and actions and things have gotten better.  But in truth, if you were stationed at JBLM in the last 7 years or so, you were pretty much on your own.  There have been a significant number of 'public' incidents, and an even larger number of non-public incidents.   How the troops have survived the lack of leadership and mish-mash there is a testiment to their strength, commitment and drive.-

@ArcticWarrior @StormR @ChupaCabra @Allwet @Txazz AW, Exactly, All military, especially combat Vets have things happen that are outside the norm when returning. Perhaps as Stormy said, Bales had issues prior to enlistment, that still doesn't equate to what happened.  JBLM is also home to a Col who was going to hire a hitman to kill his wife? But he passed all his PTSD tests prior so it was swept under?

I thought Bragg was bad JBLM is the winner hands down, and where is the Army in all this? Are they trying to figure out why all these guys are breaking at Lewis? They probably dont want the answer so i doubt it.

@StormR @ChupaCabra @Allwet @Txazz Stormy, I will not disagree with your assessment on the 'local' knowledge, of which I have none. I will add, a rather large number of the Best combat troops come from the most jacked up, disrespectful, law/rules breaking men in the military, and as you know, I was one, lol. Garrison life to me was simply a party, of which Mother was constantly pissing on My parade, thus 3 Courts Martial and innumerable Article 15's, lol. The fact a person has difficulty coping, or in my case was simply too immature to behave in a regimented environment, doesn't lend itself to war crimes. You seem aware he had 'issues' prior to enlistment, I don't know those things, only what eventually happened to him. For that I am truly sad, but I still think something within 'broke' for him, thus the killings, imo....6

You know better than this. AW summed it up quite well, "the US Army owns SGT Bales" we broke him! To surmise that he "might' have killed at home rings bells of the dingbat Lib that said, and I paraphrase, "military Vets are ticking time bombs waiting to explode", wtf? I do Not begin to understand what happened to Bales, just as I couldn't understand Lt. Calley, however, I Did understand Calley's men responding to the situation with violence. Understanding does not equal doing. SGT Bales broke for a reason, and that is why this will be prolonged, not simply because his attorney is stalling. This is 'complicated' and I for one sincerely hope they do Everything available to help understand Why?....6

6, the 'rush to judgement' on Sgt. Bales is because I have insider information that I can't discuss.  But what has not been reported nationally, but is public info and reported locally, is that he had been arrested 3 times locally - and while serving - for somewhat violent incidents - alcohol and drug related - and got his hand-slapped for all 3.  He also had a number of shady business deals before he enlisted - again open source info.   No, 6 - this was no mental breakdown.  It was a long-standing issue that the Army should have addressed long before he murdered women and children in A-stan.  He enlisted with these issues.  He was a wolf in sheepdog clothing right from the beginning.

@ArcticWarrior  @Recon6  Protecting your life and the lives of warriors absolutely trumps any law, consideration or feel-good measure - that's an absolute in my book.  I also understand that mistakes happen for any number of reasons - be it friendly fire or other, and they are mistakes to be learned from, but nonetheless, mistakes.   To me, it's all about intent.  There are cruel and crazy people in this world wearning an uniform - be it military, law enforcement, or suit & tie, just as there are cruel & crazy civilians.  If Bales had not killed innocent women and children in A-Stan, he could have killed his wife and children here at home (he had threatened to do so).  The difference is that he thought he could get away with it there - that somehow the uniform would protect him.  Fortunately, he's a rarity.

We made Sgt Bales, in part we created him, and when he broke the US Army owns him, but they try to distance themselves- but its funny how Drones strikes can kill just as many civilians and its " ooops, we bad" and the media doesnt even bat an eye, Bales they want to Lynch him. No excuse for what he did but the Army owns him.

Bales was broken, by whatever, he broke. We own him and need to take responsibilty. The Army has a habit of throwing these guys out to the dump nowadays instead of figuring out how to fix guys before they break.

@StormR @ChupaCabra @Allwet @Txazz Stormy, why a 'rush to judgement' on SGT Bales? This is an American Combat Vet that apparently 'lost it' and committed a horrible war crime. No one is advocating what he did, however, it is quite apparent he is ill = mentally to have done such an atrocity, and in due time some type of punishment will be meted out, but what about the mental issue? Therein lies the crux of the matter, it was a mental breakdown that precipitated this situation and that might be a result of poor leadership, avoidance of certain 'tells' etc. There is considerably more to this than having a trial and 'punishing' this soldier, imo....6

Robert Bales case.  His attorney is pushing to delay the a hearing - not the trial, a hearing - for another year.  In the meantime, 3 of the Afghan witnesses are now dead and who knows how many would be available in a year.  Any right-thinking person would be absolutely sickened by what he did.  It should have been an open and closed case, but he has a high-powered attorney who whines that he's not getting paid..whining of course in front of a room full of media.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
