Filipino Rebels in Standoff with Malaysian Military

The following news comes from a Filipino Facebook page but is believed to be accurate as I’ve cross referenced it with other sources:

BREAKING NEWS: The Number of armed Filipinos in Sabah has reached 300, at least six camps have been set up and still waiting for reinforcements from Tawi-Tawi.

Raja Muda Azzimudie Kiram, who had been negotiating with the Malaysian since Tuesday is dressed up in [white robes] the symbol of Jihad.

A Malaysian villager, who returned to check on his house, said the Filipinos did not enter vacant houses.

According to source, on Nov. 11, 2012 Sultan Jamalul Kiram III issued a royal decree that authorized Rajah Mudah’s journey who was tasked to lead a 1,000-strong force to Sabah.

Two weeks ago the MNLF, one of the Muslim groups, kicked off a major offensive against the Abu Sayaaf group, another Muslim organization/terrorist group in Sulu.  It seems that Abu Sayaaf got pushed right to the waterline on the coast and without anywhere else to go they hopped on a boat to the Sabah region of Malaysia.   For those who have been keeping score, these groups are completely different than the others I’ve written about previously such as the Ampatuans and BIFF which is Kato‘s Islamic faction that broke away from the MILF…which in turn had broken away from the MNLF.  Confused yet?

So,

Lets break this down.

On the cusp of the Malaysian elections Australian Senator Xenophon attends the country in the capacity of an observer from a trusted trade partner.

He is tear gassed  at a public rally and then is subjected to a public, embarrassing and permanent deportation from the country.

The Australian diplomatic corps are in a tale spin.

Islamic Rebels are on the cusp of waging Jihad on the very eve of the of the elections in order to grasp power over the country.

America based contracting companies are offered a opportunity  to "pad" the security of American based ASSETS in the region but some seasoned and knowing contractors see the deployment as a suicide mission.

Australian government in a bind.

To either physically and vocally condemn the offense given to an Australian official on a peaceful mission of observation and leave the country to it's own devices,  or brush off the offense with glib political speak and give military support in the face of a political coupe.

Please bear in mind that trade, people smuggling and mandatory detention of illegal immigrants are hot political topics on the cusp of Australia's own federal elections.

The region is a powder keg with a very short fuse.

@Red_Tide  @JackMurphyRGR  RedTide- can you please post a link re: the Australian affair? This totally plays into the Malaysian scenario. If we look at the destabilization of Countries such as Yemen, Libya, Egypt and many others; what we see is that AQ was on the ground floor of these conflicts. Their influence was a light footprint at the beginning of each conflict as to keep a low profile. Malaysia is in the begiining stages of destabilization. We have a chance to study AQ and terorists footprint right here and now, at the beginning stages of conflict. What groups AQ uses at they begin to stir the pot? What tactics are used? When does their footprint become visible? The short fuse you mentioned is true. However, would Terrorists take aggressive measures against American Contractors sent over right now? Malaysia does not have Americans on the ground in large numbers. There is a reason for this. Throw Contractors into the mix there an they will easily be recognized/spotted. It is not like they can Blend In. I think you are right. It may be a suicide mission.

The media reports contradict the live documented tear gas assault  on the same Australian Senator 9 months ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OploUkVhXL0

Issues of electoral transparency are a subject of concern for all nations in this region.

I fear that American contractors would be attacked, not because they are contractors but because they are securing American assets.

I feel the danger would be the same for enlisted personnel and contractors equally.

The eyes of multiple nations have been turned upon this region due to the recent typhoon and because of many abductions of affluent tourists taking place.

Abductions and ransoms are a way of enlarging the war chests of criminal and political organizations regardless of what nation they are based in.

At the moment China isn't a overt player and in this case it wouldn't be wise for them to be so.

Sure they are watching and they have assets in the region but their pressure will be applied through the Australian government as a valued trade partner.

Australian diplomacy has to tread that unenviable line of keeping all parties happy in order to maintain peace in this region.

@Red_Tide  @JackMurphyRGR Thank You. If you could possibly post any abductions or kidnappings that come across your radar at this post, I would be most appreciative.

I can say, an influx of folks with ties to UBL started arriving in Malaysia last year amd have set up homes, Teaching, etc. Best, Julia

I think everyone is overlooking the 800 Lb gorilla in the room...China, and their strategic economic positioning ( Brazil, Malaysia, Iran, Panama ) ...

It appears that Malaysian politicians are taking lessons from the Obama administration...This from The Malaysian: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the armed group are not militants or terrorists but “since they had guns, it is important our action does not lead to bloodshed”....

If not militants or terrorists what are they..? Pirates, or armed Filipinos on vacation in Sabah to hunt the elusive Malay Tiger...

JHR
JHR 5pts

@catsmiler I believe this statement pertains to the title of this article, this armed group is considered to be rebels not terrorists. Although there is terrorist activity, the "Rebels" are in a standoff with the military.

Historically, Sabah is part of the Sultanate of Sulu. During the American occupation of the Philippines, the American government leased Sabah to the British. When Malaysia became independent, they "forgot" to return Sabah to the Sultan of Sulu.

Lots of us Navy/Marines and Air Force people who served pre-Mt. Pinatubo remember names like Subic Bay, Cubi Pt., Olongapo, Magsysy Street, Clark AB...etc.  I also remeber the Filipinos talking about the providences they came from being infested with NPA (New People's Army).  Were these NPA's communists or the earliest wave of Muslim insurgents?  Do you think the US will return to the P.I. ????

@ClownPatrol Likely NPA; they're more active and numerous in Luzon. The Islamist's tend to keep their activities contained in the south [ARMM - soon to be Bangsamoro].

This is an interesting development. MNLF seems to be buttressing it's Moro bonfides in the wake of the MILF-Phil peace accord. ASG is the likely target, as they have strayed far afield from the Islamic autonomy cause and more towards crime and kidnapping for ransom.

Jemaah Islamiyah has previously backed both horses with IED training and facilitation, so I'm curious to see who they assist [if either] as the Moro intra-conflict spreads towards the home base of JI and JAT.

I have a hard time keeping track of who's killing who and why, mainly in Syria and the Phillipines.  Good guys shooting good guys, bad guys shooting bad guys.... it's all tribal shit.

The book shows responsible journalism.  I hope those with teeth back off. This is one time, they might get bitten back. Theres more folks behind you all than you know.

OK @Jack Murphyi read about a group called MNLF and then they splintered apparently and called themselves MILF, correct? I must admit i got stuck at  MILF, because that just really means something entirely different to me!  Don`t these dudes think before giving themselves names? The acronym just diminishes the street cred of these  camo clad clowns! Anyways. Yet another bunch of runaround bozos with assault rifles. The MILF` s ,,, bust my balls!

http://globalnation.inquirer.net/64689/sulu-sultan-called-in-to-help-in-sabah-standoffNot sure if this is relevant. There is a lot of talk about the "Sulu Sultanate". There seems to be a lot of history of bad blood around these parts. The comments by the Filipinos on that page is quite interesting as well.
