SOF Operators Needed to Support ‘Make-A-Wish’ Event

Imagine having a child with a life changing illness. Imagine living with the thoughts your child my never fulfill his or her dreams and aspirations. Imagine tomorrow, your child is no longer with you.

Serving in combat and being around the children made an incredible impact on me. Seeing their smiles, their eyes of curiosity, and their innocence was more than touching. In many ways, being around them made me realize why I was actually fighting—I was doing it for them and their future.

Some children have bleak futures. War, poverty, and illnesses often take the lives of the innocent too quickly. But for whatever reason, I still feel obligated to assist those I can. And this May, an opportunity has presented itself to give back at least one more time to help a child in need.

A young boy named Michael Bergstrom suffers from Progressive Mitochondrial Disease. This is a disease that eventually will lead to a premature death. Michael has this disease but that shouldn’t stop him from becoming a special operator for at least one day.

“Mitochondrial Disease is a progressive disorder in which the cells of the body do not make enough energy to sustain bodily functions. Mitochondria are found in every cell of the body except red blood cells and are responsible for creating more than 90% of the energy the body needs to sustain life and promote growth. When the mitochondria do not work properly, less and less energy is generated and cell injury and death are the end result.”

Michael always wanted to serve in the US Armed Forces. He wanted to serve honorably just like his real heroes do day in and day out. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, they are hoping to see such an opportunity come to life.

The folks at MACV Airsoft Vermont will be hosting, in coordination with Make-A-Wish Foundation, a weekend long event for Michael ensuring his dreams come true to serve honorably in uniform. The event will be held May 4-5 in Vermont.

MACV Airsoft, formerly GMSOG, is the premier airsoft field in New England. Situated on varied terrain in Middlesex, VT, MACV Airsoft is able to simulate many styles of airsoft operations to include MILSIM, historically accurate reenactments, and much, much more.

As a father of two who has left my children on several occasions to perform duties abroad, I couldn’t imagine what life must be like for this family. Obviously everyone won’t be able to participate for their own personal and professional reasons and its completely understood. I live about 8 hours away but still plan on attending and would love for those who can, join me.

If you are a former US government operator who worked intelligence, Special Operations, or served in combat and have the means, Michael would be overly joyed knowing he had just one or two days to serve alongside you.

To learn more about this event, I respectfully ask you go to AirsoftVT.com. If interested, you can register for the event through their website.

@KerryPatton Kerry, I have recently been contacted by Tracy(Michael's mother) off comms via Facebook regarding assisting vets get to the MACV event. If you please, contact me at tysongoll@gmail.com. If you have concerns regarding my authenticity please contact SOFREP Administrator to verify my address and identity. He should be able to vouch for me as I bug him enough.

If there are any operators/vets who DON'T have the means and wish for assistance to go help this awesome kid out, I am willing to help you help him. It's not even a choice in my opinion. There needs to be hundreds of people there for this. I am beside myself as a father to think of this. After a brief vetting, let's see what we can workout.

@HugeFan Count me in. Not just for this sweet boy, but for the men who need to be there for him too. This is the kind of thing that great memories are made of, and God knows they all deserve a few.

Hey Kerry,

I have not served and I don't have any qualifications that you have specified for this effort. I would be proud to fly out there and be a grunt for that weekend. Anything needed. T9, Laura, PH2 etc. know how to find me via e-mail. Let me know and I'd love to engage. Great effort Kerry!

Nothing like Airsoft/Milsim to give someone a taste of a combative environment.  This little guy will have the time of his life and being in the company of the ones he admires will make it a life changing experience for him.

Bravo Zulu to you all for making this happen.

We get out in the field twice a month up in the mountains of Escondido and run kids his age, vets with PTSD, active duty members returning from theatre and all types of people looking to run and gun against other humans.

I am shocked at how well some of these 8 - 12 year olds do against adults and I know of a certain 10 year old child who is missing his left hand that rips up adults all day.  We even modified his rig so he can shoot it with both arms.

Good times.

My prayers out to all of you parents who are in the suck with a child who has illnesses and handicaps. There is a golden cup filled with your favorite beverage waiting for you in heaven for staying the course and keeping your faith solid.

Cheers to all of you.

@shooten   You should come get some and we can tip a cold one after the dust settles.

We have also been running ops with ITS @  www.strategic-operations.com/

Stu Segall is a fucking saint for opening his studio up and creating the realest combat experience anyone is going to get outside of actual theatre.

I am in love with the fact that MILSIM is being looked at now with wider eyes and open minds since there is no substitute for FOF training.

I got into the game a few years ago when USTC in Otay was hosting FOF skirmishes and have not looked back. I got sick of pretending on paper and steel after years of "lucid" training.

As a few of you put it bluntly, stupid should hurt and if there are kinks in your tactices and strategem, FOF will exploit them and cause one to unfuck themselves real quick.

Good mutherfucking times.....

This article just struck me right in the heart.  My child was born with a life-threatening blood condition -  I was advised not to take him home from the hospital and get 'attached' to him.  Well, of course I did take him home and at age 9, he went into remission.  He's 43 today :)   As a parent, it is so easy to get sucked into the black hole of focusing on the things he couldn't do - the things he would never do or see.  Your life is defined by the child's illnesses and it's emotionally and physically exhausting and any time you are brave enough to look into the future, it is terrifying.   There was no Make-A-Wish Foundation or equivalent for him, so it was my sole responsibility to help him find some joy in his life.  And even all those years ago, medical costs ate up every spare penny and left tons of debt.  Making a difference in this child's life is also making a difference in the lives of his parents, family, friends - the whole support circle for him.  Participating in this effort will be an act of love long felt by them all.   Yes, please help this child realize his dream.  I'm willing to bet that you will receive more from the experience than you give.  Personal thanks to those who do participate.

@StormR I am so grateful to hear that he's 43. What a wonderful gift it is that he has been given a full life. And what an amazing parent he has. Doing it alone sucks. I know. But if it comes to doing it alone or having Bee, well...I'll choose her every single time. I can't even imagine having to deal with a sick child alone. God watches over those of us who walk this path, Storm. I'm grateful he watched over you so well.

@MedicSteve2  @Contagio  @StormR My younger brother has autism. And you learn that love has no language. It just is.  Matt talks with no words, but we understand each other. I remember when he was 3 and he was racing around the table at dinner time because he just can't sit down for long. And he took his two fingers and touched his heart and then touched my lips. And I told him you don't kiss anybody that you don't love and he kept touching his heart and then my lips with his fingers. my Dad said he can feel his heart beat. So I kissed him and he hugged me and my parents were so overwhelmed because he understood what love was. And if you have that, you have everything you need.   If I lived closer we would go to this event. It is just the kind of thing our family would love to do.

@MedicSteve2  @Contagio Steve, I don't think you hijacked the thread - I think you strengthened it's message  :)   My son has a sweetness to him that I believe he gained from the adversities he went through - and he has a strong streak of stubborn.  After surviving childhood, in his mid-20's he was diagnosed with cancer, and he survived that as well.  But it is what he has done with his challenges that humble me.  He is unable to father children so he and his wife adopted a 'special needs' child.  In his short 9 years, Evan has undergone 5 surgeries and will need at least 4 more.  The only thing I've heard him complain about recently was that his soccer practice got rained out.  Your son knows how to give and accept love, and that's a richness that cannot be measured.

@Contagio  @StormR Solid copy, Contagio.  Ours is Down Syndrome, and within the community, we are very blessed with a very high functioning child.  Still, ours has 11 different doctors, and will have a battery of tests every 6 months for the rest of his life.

It takes a while for parents to get their legs back under them after a blow like that.  For us, though, we came to a place where we realized it was probably the best thing that ever happened to our family.

Few things focus the mind, rearrange your to-do list, prioritize your life like a child with any issue.  Nothing clarifies what's truly important like that.  For that, I am thankful.

One day one of my teenagers was told me that the reason he didn't get an assignment done was, with juggling athletic practice and school, every thing was "hard right now".  "Hard?", I asked.  "Look at your brother.  He'll work harder to just stand up today than you will at anything and everything you do."  The older boy "found" his second wind.

Another friend, who's about 15 years ahead of us in terms of dealing with this, said early on, "these kids are born without guile".  It's a phrase that has stuck with me, proven true, and served as a touchstone since.  That's another thing I'm thankful for.

We all take these oaths, make these pronouncements--sometimes cavalierly.  And sometimes, God give us the chance to prove it, and it's a beautiful thing.  It's never easy, but it's good.

I had this idea a few weeks ago. I think it would be great as a way for Veterans with PTSD and children with cancer to heal together through community projects and spending time together. Being a cancer survivor and US Marine Infantry combat veteran I see that this is something that can be very helpful. I know when I was a kid in the hospital at age 7 with cancer it would have meant the world to me to get to spend some time with the heroes of our nation.

@Jdumasss04 Agreed 100%. We should never forget that our service to our nation never ends just because we take off the uniform. It should continue far beyond those times through community outreach as ambassadors to our brothers who continue to serve in and out of uniform....and beyond.
