Robin Sage is Rockin' right now

The latest iteration of Robin Sage started up last weekend. It’ll last through the 15TH. Robin Sage, run by the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, has been the official “field graduation exercise” (my words, not the official description) for Army Special Forces hopefuls since 1974. (Before that time there were similar exercises, known as Swift Strike, Guerilla USA and Devil’s Arrow.)

The onset of Robin Sage is actually public knowledge in a large part of North Carolina, in no small part because so many locals are involved. Fifteen counties are acknowledged as part of Pineland: Moore, Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Guilford, Hoke, Montgo-mery, Randolph, Richmond, Rowan, Scotland, Stanly and Union. Locals are used to the occasional odd sight and sound and are actually notified by local paper and radio when the large-scale exercise (dealing with raid planning, FID and numerous other topics) is about to begin. Much of this is to prevent a repeat of a tragic event about ten years ago when two trainees were killed by a local Sheriff’s Deputy.

Here’s an example of local notification, from Southern Pines, NC or local news from Moore County.

See also Global Security’s notation on Robin Sage.

The Prince of Pineland
The Prince of Pineland 5pts

The name comes from a combination of the Town of Robbins and (at the time) Colonel Jerry Sage. It is the end of the evolution of Cherokee Trail and Gobbler Woods.

Dick Couch's "Chosen Soldier" sets up Robin Sage really well, I think in the book he said something to effect of, 'I should've join SF, these guys do real work'.

Do SEALs have Robin Sages too?

ForrestDavis
ForrestDavis 5pts

@RedTail no they do not, robin sage is specific to Green Berets.

@ForrestDavis I'm scratching my head right now, but I remember reading in a SEAL book that they had a similar exercise...it was either Warrior Soul by Chuck Pfaffer or Combat Swimmer by Robert Gormly that they had participated in a Robin Sage "type" exercise. I know I read something about this. I'll try to flip through the books and get back to this.

Where'd the name come from?

ForrestDavis

Robin county Sage from a General from the army

Probably from a stripper at Jacksonville.

My favorite part of the Q-Course. I wish we did more UW training in Group. This is where you get to put everything you've learned to use and excercise some creativity.

@JackMurphyRGR by far some of the best, and most exciting training you could ask for
