Woman's Defense Weekly: The Eye Gouge-Palm Strike

by Brandon Webb · February 20, 2012 · Posted In: Admin
SOFREP_Alexander Wang Fall 2012
So we are running a weekly piece tailored for women and anti-creep Self-Defense (of course it applies to anyone). Me and the guys also want to provide a forum (of the not-so-creepy type) where women can ask questions and get tips on self defense from guys who know what’s up. Where can you ask an Army Ranger/Green Beret, Marine Recon, AirForce PJ/CCT, or Navy SEAL what’s up? SOFREP.com, that’s where.  And ladies, be careful of taking a self defense class from some Douche Bag who put himself on the cover of Rex-Kwon-Do monthly as a self proclaimed bad ass (true story by-the-way). It’s all about the credentials, just ask my friend Don Shipley, who busts fake Special Ops losers weekly on his YouTube show.

This week we are focusing on some basic Douche Bag self-defense techniques.

1. The Palm Strike. Saves your hands and your nails, ladies.  This is an excellent striking technique and saves your hands. Aim for the nose, it creates pain and more importantly blindness.

2. Eye Gouge. A good technique if you’re in close and need to break contact or let someone know you are serious.  When your life is at stake then gouge the creeps eye balls out.  It’s not hard and you’ll get mad props next ladies night out.

3. Surefire Strike. Not pictured. See last weeks full post on a Woman’s Best Self Defense Tool.

Surefire Strike Described:

a. Take the light in your dominant hand. Position the light in your hand so that if you were making a fist (with hands in front of you) while holding the light with either hand, the light source would be facing to the outside.  If you were to now swing your fists with your light you could strike someone with a sideways motion and also activate the light’s rear button with your thumb.  This completes the striking technique.

Practical Application:

In close: palm the light in your purse or pocket, then before striking it is key to blast your attacker with the light to blind him. Then strike to the nose or middle of the face and high tail it out of there. Repeat if necessary.

Far away: Not necessary to strike. Just blast him with the light to let him know you’re serious.

Brandon - I'd like to say thank you for putting these tips in SOFREP! btw if you use the palm strike at an angle where the palm hits the very narrow part of the tip of the chin, the technique still works but you'll have a real bruise on your palm ;)

@Missliberty Your one up on most. I hate to say it but the women on many of our contracts are absolutely out of their depth when we start talking self defense. Guns scare them, pepper spray can blow back, actual physical confrontation is overwhelming. Seriously, consider yourself affirmed. I wish more women would stand up for themselves.

Umm, does your state require you to get a concealed carry permit for that? Most states permit a stun 'gun' without a permit because it doesn't fire a projectile, you have to touch it to the person by hand. But if it fires a projectile dart like the Taser does it's considered a concealed weapon without a permit. If you haven't already done so you might want to check into the legal requirements.

In my state of NH...it is legal.

And I have the sweet blessing's of the local Police Dept!

@SEAN SPOONTS@Missliberty Great point Sean, Taser Int'l will sell you a Taser. But you better be ready for the fall out if you aren't authorized. Last week someone brought up the idea of joining the Police auxiliary. Some locales would permit you to cary after receiving the annual training. Heads up- the old school trainers required taking a shot from the stun gun / taser. The new method does not require it. So check around.

Can you guys do a video of this?

This is a video I found that comes closest to what I'm trying to describe, regarding reverse gripping of the surefire. Whether you're coming from the inside (from your chest to enemy contact hit) or outside (from your shoulder to contact hit), your center should always be covered. Strike sideways but don't go too far out, exposing your center. Control don't go too far, reset hit again protect your center.

Wow Sol,

Not into Flame wars. So have fun pleasuring your ego. Must really take a heap of testosterone to burn some OLD PH.

My job in the Navy was to document the men and possibly record things not only for posterity but for training. So yeah I really didn't have to fight. I just had to stand by and take pictures while every one else fought. Try that for growing a pair.

End of thread as far as I'm concerned.

"Petty Officer 1st Class Robert R. McRill, an 18-year veteran from Yorktown, became the first Navy cameraman killed in action since the Vietnam War when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle during a special operations raid in Baghdad." And apparently the SEALs and other SOF are taking photographers with them on missions.

"Four Norfolk-based cameramen were awarded Bronze Stars in January for their actions in Iraq."

http://hamptonroads.com/node/303021

People sometimes labor under the mistaken impression that unless you are hosing the Cong with an M-60 or pulling a grenade pin with your teeth you're not really in combat. At Guadalcanal the Navy lost more people than the Marine Corps did. I mention Guadalcanal because there is the widely held perception that it was a Marine fight. Some even claim the Navy abandoned the Marines on the island. The Navy lost cooks, bakers, yeomen, phamacists mates, coxswains and all sorts of supposedly "non-combat" ratings. Over 3,000 of them. The Navy lost 2 aircraft carriers, 6 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, 14 destroyers and dozens and dozens of aircraft and crews 'supporting' the Marine effort on Guadalcanal. Some of these non-combatant ratings spent days floating in the ocean fighting off sharks after their ships were sunk. And what was the Navy doing when it lost all these ships, men and planes? Nothing more glamorous than trying to deliver food, medicine, ammunition and water to the Marines on the ground and to protect them from attacks by the Japanese Navy.. In WWII the Navy lost twice as many men as the Marine Corps for all its bloody, heroic and headline making fights. I confess to a certain pride of service here, but history clearly shows there is no such thing as a non-combatant rating the in the Navy. Anyone who has ever dared claimed otherwise in my presense found out how quickly a 'fighting sailor' could get himself into close combat.

@SEAN SPOONTS@Old PH2 My Old friend Norm Chase was XO at CCG Atlantic when this happened. Gave me an excuse to call him up, ask how things were in the command. It was a tough day. I remember my Grandfather only saying two or three things about Iwo Jima, he was a Bosun on a LST. When shit goes south, you want a squid nearby. Remember the guys who held the Samuel B. Roberts together with cable and welded on bollards? Some of the most anxious hours of my life where spent in the Gulf of Sidra one April night.

@Old PH2 Oh yes, I know the story of the Roberts very well; "The DE that fought like a Battleship." If you haven't done so already, read "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors." It's the best account I've ever read of the Battle of Samar which I think is the US Navy's shining hour. I think the finest example of a Navy crew fighting their ship is the USS Laffey on radar picket duty at Okinawa. She took 6 kamikazes and four bomb hits and simply refused to die. In 80 minutes of battle the crew of that ship earned the Presidential Unit Citation. eighteen Bronze Stars, six Silver Stars, two Navy Crosses and one Navy Commendation Medal. I've been aboard the Laffey and its very moving.

let's maybe get a little less butt-hurt about language.  Old, you may have served, I'd be surprised if you hadn't, since you're here, so not to go 90 degrees to what brandon said, but this site is called SOFREP, yes?  Have you ever been in a team room/ready room/weapons room?

Perhaps you have, I'd guess you have.  It isn't PC, it's a bunch of people insulting each other about the size of their equipment, their sexual tendencies toward farm animals and.... we do it because it's the One Safe Place You Can Be Just A Cowboy.

It's Brandon's site, but I feel comfortable here knowing that I can throw out a "what the fuck?" and not worry about polly pissy pants losing her shit over it.

These women's self defense articles are awesome, my wife, a retired AF officer frequents this place, and believe you me she's heard a lot worse.  Hell, she's SAID a lot worse.

Just push past it.

and yeah, I'm old, too.

I can confirm the fact that a broken nose will blind you. One beer mug across the nose nearly cost me my life, lucky I had two good buddies in that little bar in Marseilles. It was still hell getting back on board the ship, the guys in the dispensary were great. Lucky our Command Master Chief, (CMC), knew me well enough to keep it from going to mast. Since it happened the second day in a three day port visit I was good to go as soon as we where underway. That is, the swelling was down enough I could see to work. My nose has never been the same, but it adds character. At least I'd like to think so.

Yes ladies, the eyes and nose are a great target. It can stop a fight in seconds. Get over the idea that it's scary. You have to get away, do not stand toe to toe. You have no idea if he has buddies with him who are maybe bigger pricks than him. Hit,claw, scream, and run like Hell.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
