Terrorist and other high value criminals aren’t as dumb as they look! Don’t get me wrong – they aren’t smart either – they fall somewhere between a rock and a goat (which happens to be their best friend on a lonely night).

Unfortunately, over time – even dumb people learn a thing or two.

These guys have become pretty creative over the past decade or so on how to communicate without detection or compromise. Most of the time, their advancements in technology and/or creativity are a direct response to some news breaking story about the technology or techniques used to catch them – very irritating to say the least!

HAMAS Covert Communication Techniques

So, I figure we should turn the tables and start exposing their techniques and technologies used to communicate covertly – ultimately exposing them! So let’s get started with some of Hamas’ not-so-secret communication techniques.

SOFREP_escapethewolf

The Courier

The use of a courier has been around longer than pigeons. UBL had a courier – the best courier in the business, but look where that got his handler – dead, bagged, and keelhauled – somebody call PETA – fish deserve better!

Using a courier is a fairly simple technique utilizing a trusted source or asset to transport and deliver a message. This is not a very secure way of passing sensitive information for obvious reasons – mostly human error. Here are just some reasons why couriers are not a good idea:

  • Couriers need direction – where to meet or pick up the information, where to take the information, how to hide the information, when to deliver the information and so on. As you can see, opportunities to fuck up are endless or worse – they lose the message with the gerbil in their rectum!
  • Couriers need money – money talks and so do couriers if the price is high enough. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain. They are couriers, they fall somewhere between rock and dirt. Their needs are simple. They want to make a dime and get high on Khat.
  • Couriers can be tracked – couriers are not the sharpest jambia in the belt. If you tell them not to talk – they will. If you tell them to go direct and don’t stop – they will stop at four khat stands and one chai stand – telling everyone along the way – exactly where they are going. Their movements and intentions usually get them caught or unable to deliver the message…hmmmm.

Terrorist Courier Talking on the Phone

The Saved Draft

The use of “saved drafts” is widely used by naughty husbands and wives having affairs, which prevents emails from ever being directly sent from your wife to me : ) Terrorists have been using this method as well.

The idea is simple – one email account is opened and the user name and password given to multiple users. All users can log in, type a message, save it as a draft, and then log out. A different user can log in and read the messages left behind. Not once was a email sent and zero personal emails are attached.

Terrorists have taken this method to new heights. For example: they have put together 30 day communication plans that include a different email account for each day with 30 different user names and 30 different passwords. Its goes like this:

  • Day 1 a message is saved as a draft – recipients then log in, read the message, delete it, and never return to that email address ever again.
  • Day 2 a different message is saved as a draft in a different email account with a different username and password – recipients log in, read the message, delete it, and never return to that email address ever again.

This process can go on and on. If you ask me, it’s a pain in the ass – I have a hard enough time remembering my 4 digit pin on my iPhone! Imagine trying to keep 30 different accounts, user names, and passwords straight – cheat sheet or not – what a nightmare!

The Terrorist Virtual World

The Virtual World

The use of Virtual Worlds, like Second Life, is now the rave in covert communications for Hamas and other terrorists. If you haven’t heard of Second Life – that’s okay – its not widely known to people that actually have a life.

Second Life allows you to create a “resident” avatar and then travel through a virtual world doing whatever you want. You can socialize, have sex with other avatars (be warned: you’ll probably end up with some he-she sitting in China pretending to be a hottie), buy and sell real estate, buy a Rolex, buy an island (like Hamas did).

You can even buy an AK-47 and learn how to use it from other more knowledgeable Avatars (Hamas) – you can pretty much do anything in that world that you can do here – in this world. It’s actually kinda funny because you’re reading this on a computer – at SOFREP Life – where all the bad ass avatars hang out! In Second Life, your avatar can be a human, animal, mineral, or even a vegetable – your choice…fucking weird.

Second Life has a GDP – Gross Domestic Product. Yes, like a country – roughly $100 million a year and growing. People are spending, making, and losing real money in this world. You can convert any currency in the world to Linden Dollars – named after the company that developed Second Life. It has a no shit economy. There are Second Life entrepreneurs that are making a million dollars a year! Crazy!

Here are 3 advantages that Second Life and other Virtual Worlds provide terrorists:

  • Virtual worlds provide secure voice, chat, IM, and video streaming from avatar to avatar or avatar to a group.
  • Virtual worlds provide secure means of laundering money of all currencies through more ways than here in reality.
  • Virtual worlds provide terrorist training camps with virtual lessons on how to use weapons and make explosives.

I think you get the point!

Concluding Thoughts

These are just some of Hamas’ covert communication techniques - some simple – some clever. We should always dime them out. Keep them off balance – keep them on the run. If you know of other ways these jackasses communicate, tell us, post it, and comment on it.

Hamas is not an enemy of the USA. Their goal is to regain their homes and land from which they were ethnically cleansed 64 years ago inside of what is now called Israel. These people and their offspring have lived as refugees for 2/3 of a century while the US supported the aggressors and ethnic cleansors (Israel).

Israel is a dubious ally of the US. There have been a string of incidents were the Israels acted more like enemies that allies - from the USS LIberty incident where they killed 30 US sailors, to the Lavon affair where Mossad agents planted bombs at US/UK instituations to make it look like they were done by Arabs to various shooting incidents between the IDF and USMC in Lebannon.  There ARE indeed terrorists like Al Quaida that are anti-American, but Hamas is a legitimate resistance movement just like the French resistance was to the Nazi occupation. Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter and other high profile people have visited Gaza and implicitly put their lives in hands of Hamas to protect them.

So lets keep clear who are enemies are.

@JHR   Try having a conversation ref this topic with a "normal" American and they think you are a nut job!  The ability to discern the 'threat' just doesn't exist in the American psyche, I quake at the thought of what is on the horizon.   6

@Recon6  @JHR With you R6.  I've tried, but people want to do the "hear/see/speak no evil" thing.  They WANT to go home and watch reruns of Family Guy, drive their little car to work every day, chat with their friends of FB and go to TGI Fridays every week.  Anything that breaks that fantasy world of "nothing bad will happen" isn't allowed in.

Recon6
Recon6 5pts

@JHR  @Tango9 That is Exactly the point!  The 'feel good about everyone people' are the problem.  I am referencing everyday conversations with people and they seem impervious to Any threat!  I cringe every time I see one of those 'co-exist' stickers on vehicles.

Does it Not occur to the people in that 'small town' what was AQ/Hez  even doing in their town?  Just your friendly every day neighbor?  Guess to be aware of the M.E. person next door would be profiling?  Or a motel/convenience store owner?

I am suspicious of Everyone, it is called S.A., lol

I am not a fan of the 9th circuit, read too many of their decisions that go the wrong direction, and I live on the Other coast.    6

@Recon6  @Tango9 I don't have this conversation with average americans. One funny thing I witnessed. A... AQ-Haqqani-Hezbollah cell was busted up in a small liberal hippy town on the west coast. The prayer house raided. Locals had a "save the camel guy parade-free the camel group-America are fear mongers" PARADE down their local main street. Due to classified information, and lack of them not wanting to research, they believed it was big brother shadowing and persecuting "a good guy and his followers". The $$$ was traced directly to AQ from the U.S. Thats how Americans think. "there is no threat on U.S. Soil. Love Thy Neighbor, etc." The worst part, that group that had their funds and assets frozen, is spending U.S. Tax dollars in 9th cicuit court and has a GEORGETOWN Lawyer fighting for them and is trying to get the names of classified informants and case notes. The FBI is doing a fabulous job at derailing that. Now, what do AQ/l-Haqqant/Hezbollah want with those names? How was their secret cell busted up? They are pissed.

Recon6
Recon6 5pts

@Tango9  @JHR  Exactly, as JHR points out.  Beneath the surface of 'everyday America' is this hive of activity in perpetual motion just waiting for the 'Moment' to wreak Destruction.  Amazing, people tune in the Reality TV when the Reality is waiting to destroy everything we believe in.  We are standing on the precipice and about to be sent over the edge, and no one is Listening!   6

I have not read any comments below, so please forgive me if these are repeats.

Prior to 9/11, when Skpe first came out, AQ, Al-Haqqani and Hezbollah were using comuniques between their cells in The U.S. -abroad - ME via skype. They said  "Isn't THIS fabulous! There are no phone records to be found!" Also, the U.S. Mail and PO boxes were used inside the U.S. Cash sales of real estate holdeings in the U.S. pre 9/11 were liquidated withenticing  no interest loans (per Islam culture) and all balloons on the notes were to be due w/in 5-7 years. The prurpose of that was to get the money out of the U.S. before shit hit the fan and the cells were fully investigated post 9/11. There was knowledgeby jihadis at least 1-2 years prior to 9/11 that the U.S. would be hit. They planned accordingly withy their U.S. assets. They had been accumulating properties for nearly 30 years, some had used public service systems, they were americanized fully.

Prior to 9/11, warehouses in remote areas of the U.S. were being used to gather supplies. Virtually undetected. That changed with the elevation of our security apparatus. Supplies were moved prior to being discovered. Prior to 9/11.

Names and ssociations were changed post 9/11, mainly considering the daughters. Mothers and Fathers distanced from their daughters. On FB, some AQ kids list an american as their mother instead of their ME ancestors, they moved to far off states and started new lives. Messages have been passed to them by obscure twitter accounts only used 1-2 times. The message will say, "I love you". Thats it in 10 years. In real life, the story was always the same "My daughter chose western way of life, we have disowned her". If you reaad about UBL, he did the exact same thing with his 1st wife and children whom he seemingly loved. This was planned. So many families in the U.S. did this pre 9/11, a pattern was noticed.

Many of the girls (children) were sent away about 6-9 months prior to 9/11. This was noticed in many, many families. When I read about it with UBL, I went "uh-h!". The same thing was done in the U.S. The girls all had "falling outs" w/their families and went to live in differemnt towns. They stopped wearing Burkhas or head scarves and became americanized to fit it. Some of the sons even joined the armed forces. Their parents, pro fundamentalism, hung American Flags outside their homes and tied yellow ribbons on trees and posts. Welcome to AQ 2.0 in the U.S. Prayer matts were hidden and many neighbors in small towns never suspected pro-Islamic fundamentalist roots. Many changed their last names to a different nationality long ago. This was pre planned.

Exchanges on FB are in code. The email draft is simple, and easily hackable. They are always modifying. If you look at their movies they like on FB, you will see a pattern and a code through the movies displayed. Same with TV shows and music. This is social media code passing 101. Messages can be passed through code and they are working it.

iceviking
iceviking 5pts

Interesting..the saved draft method... One statistical way to spot terrorists then would be to map the frequency of new email accounts to IP addresses as a function of time.  Gmail knows your ip (x1) when you sign up, if you create and or access other email accounts (e1...up to e_n) within some time frame then that could be a strong indicator. Machine learning 101 would be all over this one.

Also, going down to the MAC level is a more solid way of tracking as it is directly tied to the systems hardware. Better yet, the MAC address on the NIC/port that was used.  However, just like IP's, MAC's are spoofable as well, just more difficult to do.

I only heard about such virtual worlds but didn't really think people were so much into them except for World of Warcraft and other MMORPG's.  I guess one way to monitor these virtual worlds is for the NSA to ask the companies operating these sites for access to their servers or mainframes.  Or maybe just use the NSA's geek squad to hack their way through and plant some worm that would alert them whenever certain keywords like: "bomb", "death to America", "72 virgins",  "paradise", etc., are used by avatars.  Then the NSA could trace and identify the persons behind the avatars and investigate whether they pose a threat or not.

@Gengiskhan6 WTF? " I just disagree with this video criminalizing the organization that through free election and democracy got elected last year and then was not accepted as a result from the western countries, my Europe included." Like most europeans, you have no idea what you are talking about. "democratically elected?" try at gun point elected. Hamas is a TERRORIST organization. They blow innocent people and want to destroy our, the normal people, way of living.

And quoting Aljazeera...

You really have no idea what's going on in Gaza, right?

Gengiskhan6
Gengiskhan6 5pts

@Angryman

That's not Al Jazeera it's people opinions it's much more different. And you can tell that what is written is not supporting some side.

Then of course I will take in count the fact that is in Saudi Arabia which is a good ally of British and U.S. but still with uncertanty ... ok but here we get into the topic of "geopolitics of News" let me say if we stay on this path, better not. mm? Of course to know something you better be in that place where the things happen to learn the truth. As a matter of fact in Gaza there is a lot going on we still don't know ! because people don't care of Palestinians. Democratic elections took to the power Hamas instead of the other one. Stop demoting a side or supporting something else that doesn't go like your plan want to.

A stable Palestine is a treath to Israel because it would be able to talk as it has been in the late 2011 but then the continuous attack to it's political reality got even in UN congress blocked when Palestine wanted to seek help from the World's nations. What are you talking about ? You care of Palestine ? Don't feed me with that BS. Please. We all know. We all know how much people don't care of Afghan or Iraq but are intentioned to establish bases in the area ... Stop talking bad of Europe. Our freedom is your freedom and actually we have different reality here then there. Actually what you are letting happen there with the ACTA i.e. , if our European govt.s accept this treatee forums, blogs that talk about something that might be flagged as illegal can incurr in censorship and closure. That's what you have now in the U.S. and you want to bring it also abroad ? We are Europeans ... here people still have power and have it without fake "RBA" (right to bear arms) like the ones you have there, man ...

Ok you want to read a cool article of a month ago about Israel, read your magazine NEWSWEEK which is based in NY and still is an openminded publishing on the majority of its articles ... if not on the total number of them.I hope you like it.http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/01/01/israel-s-ultra-orthodox-problem.html

@Angryman here's what Jack Murphy said in the first Assassination of Hamas Commander article:

"I would take a hard look at the actions of the IDF and Mossad in recent years. They show serious signs of deterioration in my opinion. The IDF that won the Six-Day War and the Mossad that took Black September down a peg is long gone. Look at how poorly they handled the flotilla situation. That was an absolute abomination that I would not have previously expected from them. "

I'd like to hear your take on this. I tend to agree with Jack.

Angryman
Angryman 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@LCpl X Well, the problem is a little more complicated than "They show serious signs of deterioration". The soldiers, NCOs and their immediate officers are still as good or even better than those outstanding soldiers back in the six day war or the yom kippur war. The problem is the upper command and the politicians that Israel has now. During the 2nd Lebanon war in 2006 (which I was part of BTW as a reservist) every soldier knew what needed to be done, however a prime minister that had no experience in commanding anything, a defense minister without any "defense" experience and a Chief of Stuff that was an air force pilot and had no idea how to fight a land war, caused several operations to either stop from ever beginning or half way through them. Ariel Sharon was the last of the politicians in Israel that had the balls to do whatever it takes to make Israel survive, like we did back in 2002 (defensive shield, which I was part of too, hunting among other things Hamas terrorists).

The same can be said of the Mossad, I guess.

That changed in the last few years. Both the IDF and the Mossad learned from past mistakes and with the help of a good Chief of Stuff and a director of the Mossad they are better, stronger and less prone to mistakes.

Now, regarding the turkish "peace boat" (as they want to call it), they were supposed to bring food and medicine... Instead they had rifles, RPGs, bomb making components. I said the Sayatet 13 did exactly what the Navy SEALs would do when boarding a boat full of people trying to kill them: kill the terrorists first.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
