MARSOC Operator Needs Help – a Call to Action

by Bill Janson · March 13, 2012 · Posted In: MARSOC, Special Operations
marsoc 26 jan 06.psd
We usually talk about the men and women who’ve given the ultimate sacrifice in these ongoing wars, but today I want to speak of one man who survived.  On August 16, 2009, MSgt Eden Pearl (2d MARSOC) was traveling in a vehicle that was struck by an IED. He was thrown 30 feet from the vehicle and engulfed in flames. He suffered burns on 95% of his body and a traumatic brain injury. Due to the severity of his injuries, he had both of his legs and one of his arms amputated.

Eden and I were “ropes” together at 2d Recon Bn, so it’s safe to say we went through a bit of thrashing. I have to say that Eden is “that guy.” That guy that makes everything you’re going through look easy. That guy that is there telling you “come on brother, this ain’t nothing but a thing” when you’re hurting. That guy that epitomizes what a Special Operator is, both in being a tactically sound professional and in being a kind-hearted man. He is, by far, the strongest guy I know.

One of the most difficult things that I’ve ever dealt with in my life was visiting Eden shortly after the incident. To see your buddy suffering and in so much pain makes you feel absolutely helpless. It is a very real reminder of how fragile life is, and how in a mere instant it can change. Some doctors have said that Eden is the most severely injured man ever to survive, in the history of the military.

As you can imagine, this has taken a tremendous toll on his wife and young daughter. Brothers in Arms Foundation, a charity that supports families of wounded or fallen Marines and Sailors supporting SOF, has committed to building Eden and his family an accessible house where they can be together and also be close to the rehabilitation facilities that Eden requires.

I’m currently working on a fundraising event to support this mission. COCA Crossfit in Cleveland, Ohio, is running a Hero’s Workout on March 24 to help raise money for Eden and his family. So, I’m asking you to support this very important and personal cause. If you’re in Northeast Ohio, we invite you to come out and participate in the workout (it’s definitely an ass kicker). If you’re not from the area, please take a moment and make a donation to help a Marine that has given so much.

There will be no photographs of Eden, no press releases, no Extreme Makeover shows, merely a brass plaque that hangs on the front of home that reads, “This home was built by X # of grateful Americans for the many sacrifices made for the country.”

Take a minute to check out the details of the event at www.surviveforeden.com, and please pass this information along.

Semper Fi

Bill

With this, I also need some help. Some dude is claiming to be a " Decorated reconnaissance scout marine " on my sister-in-laws FB page. Seem's out of the ordinary and smells like the article written on the " Imposters " not familiar with RECON guys, all I know is that  humility is a trait within most of any SF/NSW military community. How do I know this guy is legit? Do all MARSOC/RECON guys go thru training in Coronado at the Amphib Base?

Bill Janson
Bill Janson 5pts

@Erek The first red flag is that he's referring to himself as a "reconnaissance scout Marine". I've never heard anyone refer to a Recon Marine in that way. But, that's obviously not enough to make a call. Depending when he was in is going to determine whether he attended ARS (Amphibious Recon School or BRC Basic Recon Course) and where. ARS used to be on the East Coast and BRC the West Coast. Now, it's only in Coronado. Also, back in my days, some guys actually got the Recon MOS via RIP and OJT. Find out what Recon unit he was with (Bn/Co and PLT) and that will help start narrowing it down. MOS is usually a good question to ask. Especially when you get into billet MOS's.

Unfortunately, the Recon/MARSOC has the same issues as everyone else in regards to imposters. The one good thing, is that there is much less information about Recon out there for guys to "school up" on!

Only recon I know about is scoping the local bars and ladies...;)

@Erek What's his MOS? Did he do BRC or did he do the Advanced? What class was he in? All of these are pretty public in terms of being able to get records.

I appreciate all of your comments and taking action. I agree that every American should be made aware of Eden's story. I'll keep everyone updated on the progress of the mission. Semper Fi.

Wow. A donation almost seems pathetic in this situation - it can't really repay him for what he has done. It's times like these when you realize it's not all about money. Thanks for sharing Bill.

@KineticFury thanks for articulating what I was thinking better than I.  Yeah, any help I can offer or any expression of pride or gratitude or sympathy seems so inadequate.

Wow.... I think every American should have to read this story. especially all the chickenhawks running around. I will be donating my tax return to this man, and Im trying to see if I can get my union to get involved, or donate. Ill be praying for you Eden.

@Bill Janson Bill, while i'm not in a physical condition to bust a workout for this, I'll gladly donate, and if you guys need some help working on the house (if it's anywhere near MI), I'll bust ass to help out.

Hey Bill, great article. I'll be praying for MSgt Pearl's recovery. It's sad too hear about so many great men and women who have served our country with honor and dignity and their sacrifices will never be known by the majority of Americans.

@ConnorT I appreciate the kind words. My biggest fear is that as the media attention dies down surrounding these wars, that our servicemen and women will be forgotten by the public. Regardless of anyone's politics, we have a duty as American's to support those that gave so much.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
