World Hide-and-Seek Federation Issues Lifetime Ban to US Navy SEAL

The World Hide-and-Seek Federation has taken the unprecedented step of handing a lifetime ban to US Navy SEAL Erik Carroll following an incident in Pakistan last year which led to the death of the then hide-and-seek world record holder, Osama bin Laden.

‘Erik has long had a reputation as the bad boy of the sport,’ said the governing body’s president, Jack Carter. ‘From the moment he appeared on the scene – popping out from behind the sofa – it was obvious that we were looking at a prodigiously talented hider and seeker, but his talent was matched only by his lack of respect for the rules of the sport. I’d always warned him that it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye.’

Erik’s 1997 world championship win was shrouded in controversy amid allegations that he waterboarded the first hider he found in order to extract information on the whereabouts of the remaining contestants, and that he made it harder for his opponents to conceal themselves by forcing them to wear bright orange boiler suits. His other infractions include fines for failing to announce ‘Ready or not, here I come!’ at the start of contests, and once tricking hiders to come out by falsely declaring a game to be over because it was dinner time.

‘Erik’s behaviour became increasingly erratic after he lost the top spot to Osama bin Laden in 2001,’ continued Carter, ‘and ultimately we were left with no choice other than to impose a life ban. We have to send a clear message that shooting fellow contestants in the eye, thereby severely affecting their seeking capabilities, simply isn’t acceptable in top-flight competition.’

Following the tragedy, bin Laden was given the traditional hide-and-seeker’s send-off as his body was tipped overboard into the sea as his fellow contestants respectfully covered their eyes and counted to one hundred.

I read the headline and thought it was a piece on fieldcraft.  In retrospect, that just seems silly.

Every terp I have worked with over the last seven years in Iraq and Afghanistan risks his life and the well being of their families. They have tremendous courage and want what is best for their country.  Full disclosure, I am not part of the SOF brotherhood, however I have had the pleasure of working along side several different SOF units and with former members while contracting.

Here's a good (sad) story SOFREP can cover, I know Jack's interfaced closely with Iraqis, and I'm sure most SOF types on here have a personal relationship with foreigner counterparts.

I also know knuckleheads or just plain racist idiots read thru this site, maybe an article to humanize foreigners, SOF troops' personal stories of Iraqis or Afghanis to shed light on stupid shit like this from happening:

EL CAJON, Calif. - A 32-year-old woman from Iraq who was found severely beaten in her California home with a note left next to her saying “go back to your country’’ has died.

@LCpl X I saw a head line mentioning this incident, didn't follow it.  I'll be asking family if anyone knows these folks.  Right after Narooz, Damn bad way to start the year.   The Detroit area as well as Chicago, and Cincinnati are areas in the Midwest that for more than 100 years have  large Middle Eastern communities.  It is an outrage that any family should suffer this, but this is on par with the crime last week in Toulouse, France.  May god have mercy on the asshole(s) that perpetrated this, Lucky your in Cali.  We still have the death penalty around here.

The irony is many of the family from that area are very patriotic Americans, they helped out great not only as role players but gave insights into culture, you want to know how the Sunni awakening came about you need to look into El Cajon, CA. Saddening.

@LCpl X Absolutely disgusting! My heart breaks for this family. They came here to find a good way of life, peace, and love. And they found that America has their own terrorists!

PS ~ I'm a regular at a couple of restaurants in this area owned by Assyrians and know some Iraqis who are regulars as role players for the Marines. This is a fucked up story that's close to a lot of Marines.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
