Women’s Self Defense Weekly with a former Army Ranger

by Jack Murphy · April 26, 2012 · Posted In: Admin

This post is going to be a little different from the others in SOFREP’s Women’s Self Defense series.  Namely, this post will deal with some of the laws of last resort and some of the brutal realities associated with a woman who is confronted with sexual assault.  This isn’t going to be pretty, so fair warning, because the crime itself is an ugly thing.  However, I feel I owe our readers honesty and integrity.  There are so-called “women’s self defense” experts out there who tell women to comply with their attacker because otherwise he might hurt them.  These people are criminally negligent and do a huge disservice to those who may have to fend of an attacker.

It’s your life and you only get one.  Once someone initiates violence against you the gloves come off.  Whatever you do to repel that attack becomes justified and a woman is no longer obligated to follow the traditional laws of society.  You don’t have to be nice, you don’t have to be proper, all you have to do is survive.

Conceal Carry

My take on Sarah Brady and her ilk: they are anti-woman.  Here is why, a woman’s best chance at defending herself against a rapist is to pull a gun and shoot his ass dead.  That’s the bottom line.  A lot of women’s self defense tactics and techniques involve various forms of hand to hand combat, some more effective than others.  Having a technique, even a bad one, is better than no technique at all but the fact is that when a woman is faced with an attacker twice her body weight a lot of those kung-fu chops are going to be ineffective.  A woman’s best chance at surviving this type of encounter is the effective use of a handgun.

I’m six feet tall and weigh 180 pounds.  If I had to fight another man who was twice my size the god’s honest truth is that if I get punched once or twice in the face then I’m probably going down for the count.

Be like Batwoman and have a few party favors in your utility belt

People like Sarah Brady who seek to put restrictions on the second amendment do a disservice to women everywhere by making them more vulnerable.  Learn how to safely and effectively carry a concealed handgun, get a permit, do carry it.  If a man tells you that you can’t handle a firearm, ever a larger caliber like a .45, go ahead and slap that monkey in the face.

Law of Last Resort

Here is another tactic that I never hear the so-called experts talk about, probably because it’s unsettling.  If your defensive measures have failed, there are a few other fallback plans.

Fallback One: tell your attacker that you have AIDs or another Sexually Transmitted Disease.  This might be enough to make him think twice.  On the other hand, a rapist may very well already be carrying multiple diseases so this may not always work.

Fallback Two: shit and piss yourself.  Make yourself as unappealing a victim as possible.

Finally, I hate to be so graphic, but as I said, there are no rules when your life is on the line.  Don’t be afraid to use your teeth.  Biting off parts of the male anatomy is acceptable in these circumstances.

Conclusion

I’ve probably made some of your feel uncomfortable with this advice.  This wasn’t about fancy looking judo-throws that 99% of women don’t have a snow balls chance in hell of executing against somebody who weighs 250 pounds.  This was about some of the brutal realities that you could be facing during a sexual assault.  If I offended thousands of women with this post but help to save just one woman’s life than I’ll have no regrets.

I realize it's been a year, Jack, but I have to comment. Thank you. I didn't have a gun. But I did have teeth, fingernails, and a refusal to just let him take what he wanted. He wasn't real happy with the results. My daughter, will have a gun, and a dog. People will always confine to assume that somewhere, deep down inside, women want it, or we're just asking for it, unless women do something to prove otherwise. 1 in 6 is a huge statistic, if you think about it.

@SEAN SPOONTS @LCpl X @JackMurphyRGR Back on topic, It would be helpful for women to know if you're looking for something more than basic point and shoot fire arms training, just how do you separate out the fake DB's from someone qualified. I always believe the more training the better, however all of my skilled friends are currently deployed. And to a woman going to a gun store is like taking your car alone to a mechanic. They see a woman and the mindset immediately switches to "easy target". Unfortunately for the mechanic, I know quite a bit about cars. Unfortunately for me, I don't have a lot of experience with combat/fighting skills particularly when it comes to guns and knives.

I have a hard time getting my head around the utterly depraved minds that would advise a woman to empty her bowles and bladder rather than use a handgun in self defense of her person and dignity. Ladies, you need to snap out of it. Murphy is right, the people who tell women things like that hate women.

Tango9

@SEAN SPOONTS Sean I understand what you're saying but that can make the target very unappealing to the rapist.

Also many of these attacks occur only after the assailant has closed to within arm's reach, where pulling a pistol may be at best ineffective and at worst provide the stronger male with a handgun.  Mace and tazers and knives may often be better options at those ranges.  Eye gouging, nut crushing etc etc.

@ACS Yes, they have armed guards protecting their bowels and bladders. There is a loss in this country of that sense of personal dignity. I remember watching the old Titanic movie as a little kid on TV. I was stuck by that final scene as the men in their top hats and tails pulled their jackets down straight and bottoned them, put on their hats and stood straight at the railing watching their women and children go in the lifeboats while the band played on. I remember thinking how brave that was to face death that way. What I couldnt put into word then was that they had dignity. I realise now that facing death with dignity comes from living life with it. I have not often flown on airliners since 9/11 because I find the searches and pat downs undignified for a free man in a free country to have to submit to.

Tom Ridge among other things was the 1st Head of the Dept of Homeland Security ( that still sounds so Stalinist Soviet doesnt it?)

They tell you what you can and cant do with your body, trample all over the Constitution, spend our money and still people dont vote.

And if you have a ball point pen and there is an infant on board said plane could theoretically be taken in theory, TSA didnt get shoe man, underwear man and a host of others, it was a knee jerk reaction and a fiscal outlay of epic proportion. Surely the money trail will show the same people who were involved in the startup of TSA are investors or owners of companies "contracting" to them.

Tom Ridges disclosure below:

Ridge reported investments in: • Microsoft, which in July 2003 won a $90 million contract with the department to provide desktop computers and server software. Ridge checked a box saying he had an investment worth $1,001-$15,000 in the company. • Unisys, which in 2003 was selected to manage four “Operation Safe Commerce” pilot programs funded by DHS. In August 2002, the company won a $1 billion contract with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for information technology managed services. Ridge disclosed he had an investment worth $1,001- $15,000 in the company. • General Electric, which this year undertook airport pilot programs with TSA for its EntryScan3 walk-through explosives detector. Ridge checked the box saying he had an investment worth $15,001-$50,000 in the company. • Sprint, which completed work this year on a new network for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Ridge said he had an investment worth $1,001-$15,000 in the company. • Raytheon, a subcontractor to Accenture on a $10 billion contract for DHS’ entry-exit program, U.S. VISIT, as well as a subcontractor to Northrop Grumman on its Homeland Secure Data Network contract. Ridge said he had an investment worth $1,001-$15,000 in the company. • The pharmaceutical companies Baxter International, Merck and Pfizer, all of which have had a stake in a smallpox vaccine. Ridge said he had an investment worth $1,001-$15,000 in each company. • Oracle, which has its own “Homeland Security Team” generating homeland security business. Ridge said he had an investment worth $1,001-$15,000 in the company.

@ACS  @MistiM  @SEAN I have always said that the more frightened a population (of passive types) are, the more willing they are to vote for fewer liberties and privacy.  Next will be putting non-related crimes (like speeding tickets) under the terrorism act and they will have carte blanche.

As I showed Officer Overzealous, that Leatherman Micra was no more deadly than my own fingers, and he didn't ask me to check them at the door. Hell, I couldn't even pluck my eyebrows with those tweezers!

@MistiM @ACS I think we run a real risk in this country of just accepting these invasive indignities to our persons as part of the world of terrorism we now live in. I think we have the equation inverted. The objective in the war on terrorism shouldn't be for us to live like the terrorists do in their own countries but for those people to live as we do. The "Spoonts Doctrine" would be to topple all their governments, kill their all their leaders, convert them all to Catholicism and get back to living our lives as free Americans instead of inmates in a prison of our own making.

@SEAN SPOONTS  @ACS I understand where you're coming from. I went to pay a *cough* speeding ticket the other day. I have a 1 1/4 inch long Leatherman Micra attached to my keychain. Didn't even think about it. Officer Overzealous nearly pulled his gun on me after I handed him my keys/weapon. While I understand the safety concern, I am 5'6" and 116 pounds and had just handed him my "weapon" to run through the x-ray machine. He damn near arrested me. At some point, common sense needs to prevail. I felt like I was in a communist country.

I find it ironic that during this conversation yesterday, some ass clown walked into a Smith's Market Place in SLC, UT which happens to be where I live, purchased a knife and began randomly stabbing people. Fortunately there was a citizen with a CCP there who drew his weapon, ordered said clown to drop his (which he promptly did and dropped to the floor) and subdued him until police arrived. Two people were stabbed with a knife he just bought...how many more could it have been had this guy not been there?

I'd like to see a women's self defense weekly on the practicality/impracticality of tasers. I know a lot of women who carry them. I personally think they're worthless. I let my buddy's girlfriend tase me at a kegger on a dare with her massive-ass taser she kept in her purse. I don't remember the specs on that particular taser but it didn't do a goddamn thing to me (I obviously was blasted out of my mind). She went out the following week and bought a five-shot .45 revolver on daddy's money. Maybe their are some good products out their or effective ways to use them, but I think women/general public (including myself) should definitely be informed on the applicability of stun-guns as a whole.

ArcticWarrior

@dm8471 Just some info I recently got from my current instructor who is currently a Det Supervisor LAPD (also 13MEU SOC during Desert Storm).  Big tough guy who is a real gentleman.  Taser updated their electronics not too long ago.  He told us that they (I'm not sure whether he meant Detectives or all of the police force) always had to experience their issue Taser.  He said that with the older model, you could brace yourself and often make it through the charge of pulsed electricity.  He said that is was not the case with the newer ones.  His quote was, "Imagine the worst pain one could experience...it was a lot worse than that."  Still, some of the determined bad guys know that the pain stops as soon as the trigger is off, so that's when they'll try to be aggressive.

ArcticWarrior

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
