Calling Out the Durango Herald

See if you get through more than a couple paragraphs of this gem before feeling sick to your stomach.  I embrace the hate.  This weaselly Steve Buscemi look alike, fondling his airsoft pistol like every Lethal Weapon veteran stereotype while he recounts losing men in Afghanistan, I love every detail.  It’s so perfect that I wonder if Katie Burford didn’t write this article as some kind of fictional social commentary, an exercise in interpretive surrealism.

I rub shoulders with those scholastic over-achievers at J-School at Columbia University.  I get it, these kids couldn’t find pussy in a Mexican whorehouse.  Shit happens, we all make mistakes.  Katie, please pull this article, do your own internal After-Action Review and let’s move on.  I’m not going to throw you under the bus because I don’t have the energy for this type of stuff.  Next time just check with SOFREP first before you run with shit like this. -Jack

I stared into the abyss, crossed the Rubicon, went through the looking glass, and fell down Jacob’s Ladder…all in one mission. Then the KBR chick told me I could only have one starch with breakfast chow.

Timothy Oliver, a Georgia boy by birth, spent years with the Special Forces in Afghanistan hunting bad guys in hideouts in the night.

Sometimes he found them.

Now, he spends his nights sleepless in a dimly lit mobile home park in Hermosa. Gaunt, with dark circles under his eyes and a limp, he smokes Marlboro reds and handles a toy gun that is a replica of the 9 mm he used to carry in Afghanistan.

He says he sees the faces of the men he hunted, the villagers he found massacred and mutilated by jihadists and the friends he lost. He takes large quantities of Valium but does not sleep.

Still, he says he would not take back the five years, three months and 34 days he spent in the military.

It started in 1998, when he enlisted and started studying at the Georgia Military Institute, training when he wasn’t in school.

He finished a four-year degree in three years before the United States struck Afghanistan in October 2001.

A member of the unit commonly known as Delta Force, he said he hit the ground in Kandahar after a high-altitude jump with thousands of other specialized troops from different branches of service.

He recalls three days of intense “house-to-house urban warfare.”

Read it and weep over at the Durango Herald.

My hat is off to Jack and the rest of the SOFREP team for calling out the Durango Herald and holding them accountable.  Here is hoping that other publications will take note along with the dirtbags like Oliver.

After I made a post on their FB page I got this:

The Durango Herald The Herald received numerous emails from people associated with the military calling into question Timothy Oliver's account. A story exposing the inaccuracies was published on the front page of Tuesday's paper. Here's a link: http://www.durangoherald.com/article/20120703/NEWS01/707029905/Stolen-valor?

As the reporter who spent months working on this veterans series, I lament the disservice that propagating a fabricated account does to all the men and women who really did make the hard sacrifice. And I regret deeply my failure to make the necessary checks before the story ran. It is my hope that Herald readers can focus on all the true vets included in the series whose service has not come into question in any form. Feel free to contact me directly with comments or concerns. kburford@durangoherald.com

@sully78 Thank You for showing this article to us old dogs.  Ms. Burford I must congratulate you for you honesty and integrity, it's refreshing to see this today.  Please do not become discouraged at all the inflamed comments we have made.  Now that we see you being a responsible journalist, you have a strong cheering section.  Keep up the good work, I hope you continue to have a wonderful and productive career in journalism.

@Old PH2  @sully78 @BrandonWebb @JackMurphyRGR @LauraWalkerKC @sully78 . you see it works. Attack is always the best form of defense. The offending lout must be brought to book and made to stand tall before the man. The Durango has done the honourable thing and recanted and apologized for their journo`s inacurate and dilly uneducated un-substantiated  un-researched drivel from an OBVIOUS ding bat wing nut wgo poses with his bestest Oscar face clutching a toy gun with his rectal pleasureing device perched there on the side table. Was this journo at all skeptical? if not i don`t think she qualifies as an investigative reporter and should rather stick to doing the traffic report or providing fellatio services for the editor who obviously employed her on looks as opposed to journalistic talent or integrity.

This is a small victory in the war that wages against a media that sways many people`s opinions because it was published! To attack these inaccuracies is very important to set the story straight so that the gormless hordes don`t believe any incredulous bull shit in print. Jack, this was a necessary character assassination and i am sure she wont be in such an almighty hurry to print material not confirmed first!

My hat is off to all you who "revved" the paper and set the story straight. Kudo`s & Bravo. Every victory regardless how small is nonetheless a VICTORY for the memories of those who died and served.

Now who is next on the list?

@michaelbdasilva @Old PH2 @sully78 @BrandonWebb @JackMurphyRGR @LauraWalkerKC Excellent point Michael - when you read the article Mr Oliver actually did the typical dodge - "sorry I offended you" - instead of just admitting he was wrong and a doink. The retraction article was really just some cover and not a true pull of the article, but it got other voices into the mix. One thing is does say though, since it was on the front page, is that people are watching them, not just progressive big brother watching us. I'll be bookmarking their page and see what they are doing as we go forward.

@greencoffin72 @JackMurphyRGR . i propose that we  all get hold of the idiotic journo`s email address and bombard her with mails pointing out just how dilly the person is that was interviewed and equally just how retarded the journo is. if the journo works for a large publication then CC their ed as well. it`s time to dispense with bitching here and take the guerilla ambush tactics to those propagating the lie on the masses and ingratiating the liars especially on your 4th of July.

if someone here has the journo`s email and or ed`s mail please feel free to post it here so we can all spread the love.

Don't these press reporters read each other's stuff? How is it the media keeps finding a new Jesse McBeth phony like this every few months? Are they so stupid that they can't learn this lesson? If this sad, delusional, obviously off his medication, pencil neck had told her he was kidnapped by Martians and fought by John Carters side in the liberation of Barsoom, she would have done just as much fact checking and vetting, which apparently is zero,..ziltch,...nada. I wish he had made up a story like that, at least that fantasy would have been entertaining to read. The next time you folks here me refer to the "stenographic media" this is the kind of story and reporter I'm talking about. It's not as if its hard to check on something like this.

Weird that all of the 'weirder' looking, most unbelievable looking characters claim to be these 'gun slingers', although I have never met a Delta operator, only seen photos, so I guess an argument could be made there. And I feel like it is a common amongst these characters to be apart of the 'most elite' group.  Also, does this guy happen to be a registered sex offender like half of the other phonies?

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
