Black Ops & The Likely Assassination of Yasser Arafat

Arafat has long been a pain in the ass for most western countries with close ties to Israel. A self-proclaimed freedom fighter, he made no secret about using terrorist tactics to accomplish his agenda.  His celebrity-like charisma polarized the Palestinian population, forced the U.S. to acknowledge him, and ultimately made him a dead man walking at more than one Intelligence agency’s kill board.

For those of you who weren’t paying attention to his likely assassination, here’s a quick snap shot of the life and death of Yasser Arafat.

yassir-arafat-the-life-of-sofrep

The Life and Death of Yasser Arafat

  • 1929-Yasser Arafat the fifth child of a Palestinian merchant is born Muhammad Abdul Rahman Abdul Raouf Arafat alQudwa alHussei. Arafat will later claim he was born in Jerusalem
  • State of Israel is proclaimed and the first Arab/Israeli war erupts. Arafat is already believed to have been smuggling arms into Palestine to fight the British and the Jews. In 1948 Arafat left his studies in Egypt to fight in Gaza. Arafat’s father is killed in the first Arab/Israeli war.
  • 1949 Arafat returns to Cairo
Arafat moves back to Egypt where he is drawn to the Muslim Brotherhood.
  • 1958 Helps found the FATAH movement. 1959 the group begins publishing a magazine advocating armed struggle against Israel.
  • 1960-The Palestine Liberation Organization founded. Arafat moves to Jordan.
  • 1968-The Israeli army attacks a PLO base in the Jordanian town of Karameh. Despite the heavy losses suffered by the Palestinians it is seen as a victory for Arafat and his men inspiring thousands to join the PLO.
  • 1969-Arafat becomes the PLO leader.
  • 1972-PLO kills Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.
  • 1974. Arafat addresses the UN and the PLO is given observer status at the UN.
  • 1982- Israeli Defence Minister Ariel Sharon invades Lebanon. Arafat’s forces are driven out of Lebanon where they had established a state within a state
  • 1990-Yasser Arafat supports Saddam Hussein when he invades Kuwait. This leads Gulf States to cut off funds for the PLO undermining the international acceptance the Palestinian cause built up over so many years.
  • 1993-After months of secret talks in Oslo, Israel and the PLO agree on an interim peace deal which establishes a framework for Palestinian self rule in the West Bank and Gaza. Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shake hands on the lawn of the White House.
  • 1994-Arafat returns in triumph to Gaza for the first time in 25 years.
  • 1996-In the first Palestinian general elections Arafat is overwhelmingly elected president of the Palestinian Authority. Later that year sections of the PLO charter calling for the destruction of Israel are removed.
  • 2000-Palestinians riot after Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visits the Temple Mount or Haram alSharif in the old city of Jerusalem. The clashes escalate into a second Palestinian uprising. A few months later Ariel Sharon wins the Israeli elections.
  • 2001-Following a wave on suicide bombings targeting Israelis Israel destroys Arafats three helicopters in Gaza effectively confining him to his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah. Israel accuses Arafat of instigating terror.
  • 2003-U.S. pressures the Palestinian Authority and they appoint a prime minister. Mahmoud Abbas better known as Abu Mazen takes up the power sharing role in April 2003 but resigns later in the year due to differences with Arafat. He is succeeded by Ahmed Qurei also known as Abu Ala. Arafat remains the key decision maker.
  • 2004 Oct. Yasser Arafat is most likely assassinated by the Israeli Mossad with deadly polonium (a Russian signature).  Doctors say he has a blood disorder but cannot make a diagnosis. On 29 October he is airlifted to a military hospital in France for treatment. A few days later he slips into a coma and on Nov 11 he is declared dead. No one thinks to do an autopsy, until later…

Assassination?

“Most likely”, says a SOFREP intelligence source.

I want the world to know the truth about the assassination of Yasser Arafat,” Suha Arafat, 48, told Al Jazeera

The Deadly Effects of Polonium

Polonium, apparently ingested with food, was found to have caused the slow death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. At high doses, polonium-210 causes damage to organs and tissues. Britain tried and failed to extradite from Russia a suspect who was a former Kremlin security officer.

Polonium is a rare radioactive element found in uranium ores and you can’t easily pick this stuff up like you can an AK-47 at a Middle Eastern bazaar.

Weight for weight Po-210 is a million times more toxic than hydrogen cyanide. A microgram, (no larger than a speck of dust), would deliver a fatal dose of radiation.

So who did it and who would have access to this element? Even though this type of assassination was a signature KGB move,  you don’t have to look to far to see who else has nuclear capability and would be motivated most to kill Arafat.  The Mossad is very good at this, just look at the Dubai assassination and the Mossad’s mission.

Here’s the Al Jazeera investigation video, it’s surprisingly good.  You decide. Assassination?

I couldn't help but laugh in the video when they said lucky for us the stains on Arafat's underwear were urine and blood that can be tested. Since he was having vomiting and diahrea for weeks it's a safe assumption that their were skidmarks as well.  Sorry i couldn't resist!

The real question to ask is why now? Is there a reason to stir up more hatred towards Isreal now? Must be something ready to come down that requires the elites hatred towards Isreal to be elevated....beware Reichstag Fire II. Not that I think Arafat didn't get burned for messing with the wrong folks and I don't mourn his passing in the least, he was scum.

@BrandonTWebb how do they know if Yasser Arafat didn't commit suicide to look like Israel (his enemy) poisoned him?

BrandonTWebb
BrandonTWebb 5pts

@jknoxville unlikely, he would've done this years ago if that was his inclination. Arafat liked to have other young men kill themselves...

@BrandonTWebb I just think if Arafat Martyrs himself to frame Israel, it would enrage anger towards Israel. Maybe?

I'm surprised that they were able to find so much Polonium in samples over 7 years old and what? 20 half lifes old at 138 days per half life? And they still find a dose 20 times the lethal amount? The question is the tranmission method. I question if it could have been food. The Israelis were sending food into his compound when he got sick. Arafat was pretty clever and everyone would have eaten from one communal plate as is their custom and a way to avoid being poisoned by your own peeps. Handling such a hugely lethal does without anyone but Arafat getting sick is a pretty good trick. The Mossad wasn't walking anyone into Arafats headquarters which they had bulldozed down to a single room. So it had to be a Palestinian either working for the Israelis(which Fatah was pretty on guard against) or working for someone else like Hamas. It almosts seems too obvious for the Israelis to have done it. My bet would be Hamas with the help of the Syrians and Russians. Then again the 20 times lethal dose found 7 years later may be a planted. The reason is when you work the half life in reverse you a get an initial exporure dose that is 5,242,880 times the amount for a lethality. Fuck! That's a lot of polonium, really a lot more than you need. That's a JDAM dropped to take out an ant hill. Just kinda thinking out loud here.

@BrandonWebb In the documentary they say that he got sick four hours after eating dinner in his compound. Which is kinda circumstantial since you eat three meals a day typically and just about any onset of illness can be tied to the proximity of meal time. This was during the second intifada when the Israelis had him cornered like a rat in his own headquarters. They were right outside and had bulldozed his complex down to a single building which they surrounded with tanks and troops. They said the Israelis tightly controlled access to the remains of his compound and sent in food and water to Arafat and his party, or permitted food and water to enter. If my numbers are correct on the dosage used at 5,242,880 times minimum lethal, I think that speaks in favor of someone planting that evidence on his effects later. That seems like a lot of pollonium to use. They say that Litvinenko held on for three weeks with just 200 times the minimum lethal exposure of 50 nanograms That's a tiny amount, like a speck of sand. What they dosed Arafat with would have been like a golf ball. His compound and everyone in it should have glowed in the dark. Litvinenkos autopsy showed his body retained just 5 times the lethal dosage amount after three weeks(he excreted the rest?) and the effects on him were devastating. He had lost all his hair and a car he rode in and his apartment were so contaminated that the car was unusable and his family couldn't go back to their home for six months. That was just with 200 times the dosage. Imagine what 5.2 million times lethal would do? In the documentary they don't mention Arafat losing all his body hair or show any pictures of him on his death bed that would show his condition to be similar to Litvinenkos. In the Litvinenko case the Brits followed a radiation trail left by Litvinenko all over London. I'm surprised the documentary didn't mention the steps the French had to take to decontaminate and entire hospital that has been exposed to ionising Alpha radiation, cause the Brits had a real problem with decontamination of the various places that Litvinenko had gone after being exposed. His wife was dosed, people around him were. Everyone who shook his hand or breathed the air in the same room with him took a dose. How did Arafats wife not end up hot like him? Again, just playing devils advocate here.

If it was really Polonium then the question seems to be: do they want everyone to know who did it? There are a limited number of entities that perform this kind of action with this material, so by choosing this method it seems like an overt message. Intimidation?

Something you forgot to add I the history of this maniac was that after he supposedly signed peace with Israel and was asked by Clinton to publicly denounce terrorism and acknowledge the state of Isabel as such, he never did. Instead he grabbed all the money the US and the EU sent the newly formed Palestinian authority and used it to fund his private army instead of helping the Palestinians. And then started sending suicide bombers into Israel. It so bad during 2001-2002 (with an average of 7 suicide bombings in Jerusalem, tel aviv and other cities) that Ariel Sharon called for a massive reservist re-enlistment (the biggest since the 82 war with Lebanon) and we went into all major cities on the west bank to hunt and destroy FATAH and Hamas terrorist centers. 40+ days and a full siege of the Pal authority in Ramallah caused the suicide bombers to stop. The world never acknowledged that Arafat was involved. I say if this was an assassination then thanks and good riddance

it was an assasination. a pretty good one. if that russian spy woudnt made the media, then no one would know of this method.its so discreet. guess the only thing that gives it off is radiation. the question is that who did it? i guess only a few countries like russia and the u.s have this kind of stuff. maybe Mossad?

Polonium is a classic of trademark of the USSR KGB (it's the SVR now). As Irishlad mentioned, this was the same isotope that "prevented" (if he did spill the beans on Putin then only the CIA and MI5/MI6 know about it) Mr. Litvinenko from supplying information on interesting activities going on in Russia and across the world on Russia's behalf.

I think it was the Mossad but who really knows. Like AW mentioned below, YA had plenty of enemies all over the region. Really good stuff, thanks Brandon!

If it was assassination, then the assassins covered their tracks pretty well…this would be a pretty good example of how a covert operation is supposed to be executed: you know that something was done, but you have no links to any government in particular, so if it is the Israelis did do it, they have plausible deniabilitiy.

He was ineffectual after he lost the backing of the U.N. There are a dozens more "leaders" that could and have caused more problems than he could have by that point in his life. But then again getting some good old fashioned revenge on someone that's been such a pain feels awful good too. We'll probably never know the real truth. Maybe USAF wants to showcase the need for new hardware by getting it's ass kicked like it did when it went up against the Indian AF a year or two ago with their Russian birds. I'm all for allied forces training but we've got our own OPFOR. In an era of shrinking DOD budgets it could be that USAF wants to outsource OPFOR - to the actual OPFOR. Can't wait to see if the Chinese also get to tryout at Red Flag for a shot at that contract. Maybe we need to change the name of Red Flag to something more PC so no one gets offended....

To me YA was a monster, not like Uncle Adolph or Uncle Joe but he made it "cool" and acceptable to be a terrorist.  @ArcticWarrior  @ufridman Faith plays a big part of it too. It does for me at least. Here in Alabama, I grew up reading about the Israelites every Sunday morning in Sunday school. I know not every body in the U.S. is Chistian/Jewish so interpretations will vary, but the U.S. as a whole is based on Christian values so we have a soft spot for Israel. That's the Faith based part of it anyway.

On the political side, I can relate with Israel with what I said above. Therefore, I like to see someone kicking ass in the hornet's nest of the Middle East without all the bureaucratic shit that the U.S. puts on itself.

I don't know that I'd call him a monster (I reserve that name for SOBs like Sadam, Hitler, Stalin, Ivan, etc.) but the world is better without him. From my limited knowledge of the man, I'd put him in as the political version of the Mullahs and Sheiks we deal with in Iraq & Afghanistan. Bloodthristy, cowards under the guise of religious leaders.

Uri, lots of us here in the States think of Israel as a great friend, a little brother so to speak. When I was a kid the US was stagnating, Vietnam was still hanging over us, the Soviets were still the Great Bear. In school doing current events I can still remember discussing the Israeli AF engaging MIGs of various despots, I know this sounds corny, but I felt by proxy the IDF and the others were using our F15s and 16s validated us and that maybe the Pres ( Reagan ) was right we were on our way to being great again. So as a kid the fact that our friends were fighting and winning (as well as the UK in the Falklands) gave me hope.

Among other things was the SAS Embassy raid and of course Entebee.

The 80s were a rough patch to grow up in for someone reading US Military history so I found those bright spots.

They have millenia of historical/military precedence in their own history to understand what will happen if they show weakness. They are literally swimming with crocodiles. I dont always agree with some of the policies they have but think of them as a staunch allie who lives under the most extreme microcosm with everyone second guessing anything they do. We have only a handful of friends in the world and they are one of them, and despite our spats we have had with them, we should treat them better then we currently do. I also would rather give Israel money and fund them then give Pakistan one cent.

@ArcticWarrior I really hope the U.S. repairs some relations with Israel. I don't care who you are, you don't fuck with the Israelis. You can take a biblical or historical stance on that but it's still a good philosophy. You'd kinda think all these folks that get butt hurt if Israel sneezes would realize that. You and your dog wind up dead if you piss Mossad off too much.

Good point about his effectiveness near the end and the others running the show with that pack but he made some enemies that dont forget so easily, which of course opens up the conspiracy. But either way another keffiyeh wearing thug is no more, but his good friend and fellow scum bag Leila Khaled makes a good living hitting the "speaking" circuit telling us how evil the Israeli's are.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
