We have been sitting inside this hot and smelly van for almost 6 hours, we were waiting for the green light to go into one of the towns in the West Bank and snatch a leader from a local terrorist cell. All of us were ready to explode, summers in Israel are hot. 110+ hot and sitting inside that van was not the best way to spend the afternoon.

When the OK finally came we waited for another couple of hours until night to move. Movement was very slow and deliberate. Imagine a 3, 4 and 5 stories buildings with balconies, windows and doors everywhere. In between little streets sometimes with enough room for a single walking man to pass. Not the best place to be on a firefight.

This particular terrorist we were trying to capture was in charge of planning the suicide bombings several factions were trying to(unsuccessfully) send into Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other urban areas in Israel. We wanted him badly. Usually another unit, one that specializes in this type of missions, would be tasked with this, however we were told they were otherwise busy. So on we went, a sniper platoon. We had a lot of training in urban warfare and counterterrorism, yet this was our first capture mission.

We finally arrived at the house the intel guys told us. We divided into two teams and took position. My team was going to enter via the front door while the other team was going to jump a little wall and enter via the backyard.

The house had all the lights off, except for one on the second floor. Carefully we tried to open the door but it was locked. Brute force it is then.
I radioed the other team leader and we started the counting. 3… 2… 1… GO!

We crashed the front door and went in. I saw the other team coming in from the back door. They would clear the ground floor while we took care of the upper floor. One of my guys took the lead and we all went up the stairs. As a soon as he turned the corner after clearing the stairs I heard a woman screaming followed by my buddy’s yell “contact!”. I saw this big woman running at my buddy with a frying pan. He didn’t want to shoot the woman so he knocked her out with a hit of his M4. She went down, but soon started yelling again while trying to hit my buddy with that frying pan from the floor. I saw movement in the corner of my eye and there, another big mama coming at me.
In the meantime our target jumped out of his bed and started shooting with an AK-74. The rest of the guys started returning fire while we took care of two women. We did not want to hurt them, but we didn’t want to lose anyone because of these two women.

So, my buddy was dealing with the first woman we encountered and as I was running toward the second one, I saw the woman that was trying to attack me, a big, big woman, change course and start going in the direction of my buddy. She reached him first and started pounding him with the frying pan. A second later I was there. I placed rifle on my back with the sling and grabbed the woman by the neck and restrained the arm holding the pan. All the sudden I saw her pull what looked like a 1911 from under her curtain-like dress. Now this was getting serious. I knocked the pan our of her hand while applying more pressure to her neck. In a few seconds she would be unconscious but she was still trying to get that fucking pistol out. Meanwhile the guys managed to kill the target and my buddy managed to get the other woman restrained.
I grabbed my knife, and stabbed her in the heart. She kept on moving. I stabbed her again. She kept on moving. And again. No luck. Finally she went limp from the chock hold I had on her.

WTF? I stabbed that woman 3 times and nothing happened.

After everything settled down the medic went to check on the two women. He called me and with a huge grin pointed at the woman, who was just beginning to wake. I looked down and saw that this big woman wasn’t a woman at all. We later learned that he was one of the target’s main guys. He was wearing several layers of clothing to make him look bigger, but more importantly, he was wearing one mean, not yet activated, suicide vest under all that. My stabbing went through the clothing and stopped dead at on one of the explosive packs that was full with rusty nails and other metal pieces.

Man… During the whole operation my heart beat has been quite steady, but upon learning this all the sudden I felt weak. My heart was going 1000 Miles an hour.

No Shit There I Was….What a woman.

Thanks for sharing Uri.  I would love to hear ALL your stories !

For all those that would like the US not to support Israel I can tell you that there are plenty of Israelis, people whom are actively doing what Uri describes above, that would be perfectly fine with that. In fact, they feel that it would finally FREE Israel to do what it must.

@lightfighter Listen, I am the FIRST to be infinitely thankful for the US support. It is the US generosity that helps keep Israel safe. I am so thankful that I volunteered several years to come and train US forces in what I learned about CT and Urban warfare. It was a small way to give back.

@ufridman I didn't know that the israelis have trained US forces in CT and Urban Warfare, I have some questions about it, I hope you don't mind Uri: - Is this still happening? - Were you guys training conventional and SOF american forces? Sorry for the questions Uri, I just want to learn more about the IDF, and you are the right guy to ask these questions.

Robert Heinlein. Classic sci-fi novel, Stranger in a Strage Land. Among the characters populating that novel are the Fair Witnesses. Men and women who give testimony so accurately in legal proceedings that their veracity is not questioned. Why do I mention this? Because Ann, a Fair Witness, is asked (in order to prove the point) "What color is that house on top of the hill?" Ann replies, "It's blue on this side."

On this side.

You know what they say about assuming.

PS - during my university years I also worked as a surgical tech. I remember all too well the 300+ pound guy brought into Trauma Surgery with multiple 9mm holes and multiple stab wounds. And he was bitching. Awake and bitching. Moral of the story? Head shots and something that starts with at least .4

@OPR Everyone serves in Israel, everyone is a conscript. Even the officers, they all start at the same place. SOF units are unit's you have to volunteer, depending on where you are assigned originally or of you specifically recuested to go to a certain SOF unit you have to go thru indocs, preps and other stuff before even being considered.

@Vaping_Gamer  @JackMurphyRGR  kinda stupid comment.  The only way to work with our allies is to send people over there to get face to face.  We have CIA people in the UK as well as probably every other allied nation.   Joint ally operations are often coordinated and run out of host nation facilities, etc.

@JackMurphyRGR Not surprised Israel has spied on us. Our treatment of Israel has not always been consistent with official claims that she's a close ally. The Obama administration leaked to the press that Israel was trying to obtain an airfield to operate from in Azerbaijan. That probably killed the deal. Then Defense Dept. sources told the press that an Iraeli strike on Iran was likely in six months, kinda sucking the OPSEC out of that option for the Israelis. It would be great to have Israel join us in the "Five Eyes"(Canada,UK,New Zealand, Australia) but we have to be consistant in our support of that country's national security goals. And I just don't think we are.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
