With former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton on the main stage at CPAC speaking about foreign policy, the relationship with the Trump administration and the U.N. was in the air. Trump and his current U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley have been known to speak more plainly and directly to the international organization than administrations past –some would argue they’ve been antagonistic at times–others would argue they are drawing lines in the sand that are long overdue.
In December of 2017, Trump threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favor of a draft United Nations resolution calling for the United States to withdraw its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital saying “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”
When the General Assembly voted 128 to 9 against the Americans, Ambassador Haley said she would take names and remember them the next time the United States was asked for financial help from members who disagreed with its stance on Jerusalem.
The vote against the United States, she said, would make a difference “on how we look at countries who disrespect us at the U.N.” That following Sunday, when the UN budget for 2018-19 was finalized, she issued a statement emphasizing the American role in achieving more than $285 million in cuts, along with hints of more reductions to come.
More recently, Trump hosted a lunch at the White House with the United Nations Security Council to discuss, in the President’s words, the administration’s cooperation on a “range of security challenges including the very importantly, countering Iran’s destabilizing activities in the Middle East, ending the Syrian conflict and confronting terrorism.”
This was a decidedly more congenial tone but I would expect to see the UN continue to bristle against Trump in the future, as they are not used to being managed in quite this way.
