chiphires Wingman Agree Chip, and as for the WMD, they were there, we sold them the technology, precusers and vectors in the 80's and they used them on the Kurds, the Iranians and the Gulf War Vets. Agree, there are human factors that can't be completely eliminated and shit will happen. But the hiding and coverup isn't ok whether there is an election coming up or not. It just happens that there was and they did. And the best part is they can say "sorry, top secret. Can't talk about it." I don't think accountability is going on behind closed doors, I think they are fending off and hiding behind closed doors. Cheers.
Wingman chiphires Wingman, wherever there are human endeavors, there are human errors. I'm as cynical as the next guy when it comes to people who wield power, and I'm certainly not apologetic or 'brainwashed" as you say about the foibles of the system. In fact, I was nearly apoplectic over the brainwashing our country was subjected to by the system in the run up to the invasion of Iraq for non-existant WMD and supposed al-Qaeda connections. Where was the accountability there? I know of over 4000 Americans losing their lives, but I don't recall anyone losing their job. However imperfect this system is, I'm not particularly persuaded either by others in the same system who are jostling for positions of influence by second guessing every decision just because they are not making those decisions. By its very nature we accept a certain amount of non-disclosure from those agencies who work on our behalf secretly over the decades whether it was the OSS, the CIA or others; not pointing out who in an embassy is a real diplomat and who is the CIA station chief does limit accountability but who could expect serious intelligence work from someone wearing a CIA baseball hat roaming the streets of a foreign country? The fact that this tragic loss of life came so close to an election, made it open season to be politicized. Stevens by definition as an ambassador was part of the system, yet it's hard to understand for me why the system would suddenly turn on its own, except for obvious miscalculation. You can now see the result of this Benghazi affair's accusations this very weekend. We are closing American embassies across a vast region because of some intelligence that our installations/people might be in danger, without any kind of precision. Better to clam up than to be accused of bad intent if some terrorist activity, God forbid, took place against our personnel. I believe there is some sort of accountability taking place, it just happens to be going on behind closed doors, because the system also loses when its own members die.
chiphiresWingmanYes, you are right, there was a cover up of a botched operation occurring just before an election so they hid the truth from the voters. Everyone already knew it was CIA operation including the Libyan terrorists. Do you think that accountability can be dismissed merely as a result of playing the classified information card? There is nothing anyone in our government should be doing that doesn't hold some accountability. That's the crux of the matter, no one is accountable and they all hide beneath the cloak of "Spy vs Spy". Don't be brainwashed into thinking its OK because this is the system. It's only the system if you let it be.
Wingman chiphires It appears to be more of a cover up of a botched operation. All the political noise is a distraction. I thought from the first news reports that it was connected to the CIA, from changing the initial status of 2 of the 4 killed from State Department employees to later CIA contractors; now it appears that dozens of CIA operatives were in the vicinity. Ambassador Stevens unusually served in Benghazi during the civil war coordinating rebel activities with the US government (I would guess most probably the "agency" branch of the government) and continuing on in that dangerous area which is highly irregular for an ambassador. After Manning and Snowden, the powers that be (both Republican and Democrat officials publicly disapproving of the leaks), there have been major diplomatic, political efforts to retrieve Snowden; I would be surprised if intense pressure was not applied to ANY sensitive, classified information. I think the ex-director's hands are PARTICULARLY tied not to divulge any classified information. It's the way the system is designed, with the higher-ups more obliged to keep silent.
Wingman chiphires I don't give a damn what is required to clean up and clarify this Mess !! This entire situation is a Stain on the fabric of America and the Heroes who protect us, and any person(s) involved need full Accountability, imo, and that is Everyone. Should the house of cards come falling down, so be it, Americans should never be left hanging should any chance of saving them be available. The excuses, not reasons, given thus far are unacceptable..Charlie Mike, I am Learning so much here....6
