XM25 To Become The M25

There are a lot of O-6’s and generals who have tied their reputations to the PR for this gun. All I’m saying is; there is a lack of operator common sense tied to how the warhead works. A duel fused 25mm round cannot pack more demo than a 40mm low velocity round, it is pure physics and impossible. Yet the PM’s are stating it is more lethal within 5m than a 203 round. This statement is on par with a weapon that cleans itself. “No cleaning kit needed.” The demonstrated lethality for the XM25 was balloons tied to sticks. The Fire Control System (FCS) is a great concept, but a shoulder fired 25mm round does not have explosive power to kill unless hit with it. I know I’ll take fire for saying this, but the concept and round was not designed and marketed as rifle, it is an air bursting or counter defilade system. I hope the users and the public will get past the “wow” factor and start asking for the real data; what is the demonstrated speed, size and material the frag will penetrate before you give this to our military.

According to the story boards provided to the DA G3 this year; The XM25 has not killed one enemy in combat. When briefed to the DA G8 this year, PEO SW who has inflated all of the results of its success in combat, to include where the nickname “Punisher” came from, were met with, “The duration of a fire fight is not a factor of a weapons effectiveness in combat. What is the body count?” The PEO could not validate one KIA tied to this weapon system (ever) after two years in combat. The Carl Gustaf was briefed that day in the same meeting. “The M3 just made it in to combat with the Infantry this year. Here is the running count of the KIA’s piling up with the M3. Prove the XM25 kills the enemy or I will kill this program!!” (Gen Barclay DA G8). Two months later, another XM25 exploded. Bringing this to three of the same incidents. After the first incident, approximately 60 million dollars in extra development dollars was given to fix this problem. The program has now been gutted of funding.The PM’s are fighting to validate this programs future need. If it does survive the cuts, it will be required to produce bodies before the full funding is provided. All of the guns and munitions have been pulled from theater.

majrod CarlRC YankeePapa ArcticWarrior The basic idea of my comments was to teach such tricks to your soldiers so that, when you can do them, they will do them.  Of course, when you can't do them, you don't do them.   For example, if you are taking a break near a stream of water and the water is clean enough (not necessarily to drink), there are tricks we use which could help the soldiers use that water to get their core temperatures down such as washing the salt off your face, washing your head with a wet rag (bandanas), wetting a bandana and velcroing it around your neck, and such. I agree with you that a lot of sports, especially football, baseball, and basketball, much less in common with combat because they are in very controlled environments or playing fields, which soldiers don't get to enjoy.  But marathon sports which have to deal with changing courses and uncontrolled environments will have more in common. Bicycle road racing (not track) is one of those.  We have the RAAM (Race Across America) which is run from Los Angeles to NYC and takes about 6 days for the winner to complete and longer for the rest.  It is an individual time trial where you can't draft anyone or anything.  The racers try to ride the first 72 hours without stopping because they learned that they begin to hallucinate at about 72 hours and then take 1 to 4 hour naps every 24 hours for the rest of the race.  Paris-Brest-Paris is a none stop 48 hour race where no one sleeps during the event.  The Tour de France, Giro de Italia, and Vuelta de Espania are all super tours which last 23 days with only two days for rest, can race 10 hours or more in one day, and cover about 2,100 t0 2,200 miles in just three weeks.  It is nothing for them to burn 10,000 calories in one day or about 60,000 to 70,000 in one week (you should see what they have to eat in one day).  The longest single stage professional road race in the world used to be Beaurdox-Paris which was 365.5 miles without stopping (about 16+ hours for the winner). They compete in heat, cold, rain, snow, shine, and everything else (they do seek shelter for things like hail and lightning - some times).  A number of years ago, US rider, Andy Hampsten, won the Giro de Italia in a blinding snow storm over a mountain in which visibility was down to 30 feet or less. I fell in love with bicycle road racing because it was easily the  toughest sport in the world and the athletes were considered to be the most fit in the world. There are bound to be things our soldiers can learn from such sports which will help them do better and have fewer problems because there is more in common.
