They are part of the elite Presidential Security Force Detachment. Four Marines work 30-minute shifts outside the West Wing of the White House in Washington, D.C. The Marines chosen must have exceptional military bearing and have the discipline to stand still for extended periods of time. While the job may seem glamorous, the Marines often get teased for being glorified doormen.
The Marines’ office is located in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House, and is not much bigger than a bedroom closet. An added perk of being a White House Marine is that you’re able to give White House tours to guests and family in areas the public can’t access.
