The Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) consists of about 2,500 Marines. Its ground combat element is a battalion landing team (BLT), organized around an infantry battalion of three rifle companies and its combat support elements. The air combat element (ACE) is a composite squadron with two or more types of helicopters. Rounding out the MEU is the Service Support Group (MSSG) which logistically sustains the infantry battalion and aviation composite squadron while deployed.
Flexible, compact and versatile, it is intended for rapid reaction and small-force contingency deployment. It is normally the shipboard-deployed element of a larger landing force. This type of unit was the first to land in most situations calling for Marines in recent years.
In this video produced by Corporal August Light, fellow Marine Corporal David Jorgenson explains how he and his Marines conduct a vertical assault into a simulated urban setting. The Marines and Sailors are with Echo Company, Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
