At 11:38 local, a car exploded in a parking lot near Utsunomiya Castle Park in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture Japan. (North of Tokyo.)
So far–and I *do mean* it just happened–there are three injured, one dead. Authorities have yet to clear the vehicle, so there is zero info from “ground zero.” As in, no one knows if there was anyone in the car when it popped.
Witnesses have all stated there were two explosions–in two separate locations: one is the vehicle, the other is still not reported (but some witnesses are saying it was near a bench where the three injured were found). The position of the vehicle does not show it was in target position–if there was a target. So, if it’s terrorism, shit went sideways prior to being on target.
There are basically two reasons a car explodes in Japan: freak [“legitimate”] accident, or disposal of a body (which is a typical thing, but usually doesn’t occur in the middle of a large city). Could add suicide–like, good ol’ fashioned suicide; not suicide terrorism.
Tochigi Prefectural Firefighters are running the show at the moment, with SOFREP and Yahoo Japan right behind.
In the park, a large festival and parade was about to begin. The annual festival was to commemorate traditional culture in the area (dance, crafts, taiko drums, etc.). At the moment, no one has any inclination that anyone was trying to attack this festival. In any case, the festival has been postponed.
As this is unfolding, you will be kept abreast. Doesn’t seem terroristic, but write nothing off until the shit clears. (The fact that there were *two* separate locations is shady as shit.)
72-year-old former Japanese Self Defense Force troop suicide. Three total injured (two older men and one Junior High School boy). They are stable.
The one fatality was the suicide.
The note was found in his sock. It was typed. It mentions worries about his life and family, but finally states the way to fix those worries is through suicide.
Both explosions were caused by the suicide. No one knows yet why there were two bombs. Police are currently investigating attempted murder. Three total cars, including his, were burned. A small bomb also exploded at his home, burning everything. (Making three total.)
No further damage or injuries have been reported.
