In an utterly unsurprising complete lack of situational awareness, the Japanese government is smack dab in the middle of having to switch all its gears. See…everyone in Japan was expecting HRC to win. So much so that almost no one in the gov–or society–has that much info on Trump.
There was a book already written and set to publish in Japan *as soon as the results were final*. It was, of course, about HRC. Suckers.
The book has been scrapped, of course. Site on the author, and the book, down. Expecting readers left scratching their heads…much like damn near everyone in the J-gov.
The Japanese Parliament–the Diet–is literally clueless as to how they should proceed with their foreign policies and U.S. relations. Everyone–from the lowliest PoliSci student, to PM Abe–is having to completely readjust fire. It’s beautiful.
You see, miscalculations of this magnitude (as well as the inability to shift seamlessly and quickly; adapt) are one of those things that unanimously belies a person’s/peoples’ pervasive dipshittery. No excuse for either at any level of any industrialized nation’s government. (This is to say nothing of our own damn issues CONUS…)
And the fact that an entire political system for a nation at the level of Japan–damn near all personnel and processes–were so completely off-calculation and off-base, that they are now basically coasting along in idle while someone somewhere in the system pulls shit together.
This matters for two primary reasons:
1. The aforementioned belying stuff up there [is a solid fucking indicator of just how clueless an entire swath of civilization can be].
2. Being that completely wrong about something as significant as who *may become* the leader of your biggest ally–and also, consequently, the most powerful country on the planet–is not at all good for your credibility as a regional (much less world) power.
So…the nation of Japan is having to play catch up. Probably having to revamp several HRC-faced raccoon mascots, or change some teeny J-Pop song lyrics to reflect a new welcome message for the new POTUS. I dunno. But probably weird shit. In any case, Japan’s enemies in the area *can* certainly exploit such a misstep.
I haven’t really looked into it deeply, but I’ve heard similar shit from PRC (China), ROC (Taiwan), and ROK (Korea; the good one). None of them would really surprise me either, though, I suppose.
Bottom line is that *a lot* of people were caught off guard by the election results. And they shouldn’t’ve been. Either anticipating the result, or being prepared for it. Either option would have made you not a complete dipshit.
I mean this at the political level. Not at the ‘I keep refreshing my phone to check the updates’ level.
