Zurich, Switzerland – A Zurich spokesperson for the city police has confirmed that there was a shooting that occurred near an Islamic center on ‘Eisgasse’ street in central Zurich on Monday resulting in at least three unknown individuals being shot. The suspect or suspects are still at large as the Zurich city police begin a city-wide man hunt for the perpetrators.
It is not clear as to why this rare shooting occurred or whether it has any involvement to the Islamic Center that is frequented by many Somali Muslims and is located on the very street that this attack took place. Other businesses such as a trade school and a shopping center are also within the same area of the center as well. According to the Swiss newspaper Blick, all three of the victims survived the attack and are being treated at a local hospital in Zurich.
Zurich police have confirmed that they have launched a tactical operation with SWAT teams at the city’s main metro station but would not confirm whether the shooter or shooters were the main target. The city police along with Zurich SWAT teams are conducting building-to-building searches all along Eisgasse street in conjunction with the operation at the train station. Police authorities would not confirm however that today’s attack was connected to the Islamic Center itself as the situation is still quite fluid.
Shootings like these in Switzerland are very rare, with the worst attack occurring in February 2013 where a lone gunman shot and killed four people and wounded six in the Swiss village of Menznau. SOFREP will continue to track this story as it develops.
