JUDGE IN BERGDAHL CASE NIXES DEFENSE REQUEST FOR DESERTION PERIOD TO END AS OF CAPTURE BY ENEMY FORCES... http://www.ktvb.com/news/crime/bergdahl-judge-rejects-motion-to-limit-desertion-duration/451565520 At Graduate Casual in 1968 (while I was waiting for orders), we had MPs bring in a lad who had deserted a couple of years before from recruit training. Mother was rich so he was hanging out in Europe. Attached himself to a group of American students on a tour of Czechoslovakia during the "Prague Spring..." Soviet troops boiled into the country and group taken into custody by Soviet officers who confined them to their hotel until they could be escorted out of the country. The lad had better sense than to inform his Soviet "hosts" that he was a deserter from Marine Corps boot camp. He returned to his home in Chicago and turned himself in. When he arrived at MCRD he half-jokingly asked if his "good time" started at Great Lakes Naval facility... or when he was "in the hands of military authorities" in Prague... Kind of thinking that Bergdahl's lawyers seem to think worth "throwing at the wall" to see if it sticks... -Yankee Papa-
