Great point, and interestly also implicate Churchill.
My husbands grandfather and all his brothers and sister enlisted for the war, we were able to find his records and 1 other brother. His grandfather was sent to Bouganville PNG and his brother was sent to Rabaul PNG and became a POW, he was there from 1944 to 1946 before being returned home. My mother-in-law said how he was never the same, understandbly. His grandfather never spoke about the time he served, but would march with his buddies every ANZAC day, followed by a couple of drinks at the Pub after.
Concur - every year the ANZAC day games in Super Rugby are very emotional with the tributes.

But within days it was learned that the Japanese were building an airfield on Guadalcanal and the Marines had to unload their cargo loaded ships and combat load them... (Ammo, food, medical supplies, etc on top) and leave anything not combat related in New Zealand (baseball equipment, and such like... and their green and khaki uniforms.) ...In early 1943, shot through with Malaria, emaciated, and literally in rags... the 1st Mar Div arrived in Australia. The locals took pity on them. No Marine uniforms to hand and no way to quickly get any... So the Corps flew in Marine insignia (took up almost no space...) the U.S. Army gave them khakis... and the Australian Army gave them "blouses..." https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8fb4c27aed6bdb43b42e8d96fa6cf6015b03e04cfd42a3da7d1b1350b8095245.jpg -Yankee Papa-
