solid quote. a lot of food for thought
Yes! I love that quote in the middle, "How did those obsessed with the past know so little of history?" Erasing the symbols of the past never does anything to change the course that history took to get to the present...and we risk losing the ability to ask important questions about why things happened they way that they did, and whether we want to repeat the same mistakes out of ignorance.
Haha...I felt a similar pit in my stomach every time my alma mater asked me back to teach a class, and I didn't even have the same excuse (just an awful lot of years spent battling hard classes, no military torture). (Although it seems to be getting easier to go back the more time that passes.) Your comments about managing expectations of "life after" are actually very relatable. I suspect you had to cope with that jarring experience twice, once after school, and once after heading back to the civilian world.
a topic I've been thinking about lately... http://www.nationalreview.com/article/450689/erasing-history-censoring-confederate-past-rewriting-memory-mob-vengeance
As far as GWOT stuff, modern times, I have an affinity for the SOF side of the house (go figure!) but I'm more interested in historical military topics. I've been really into the American civil war, and ancient warfare. Mostly with the persian empires and other middle eastern dynasties.
