The Department of Defense released the names of the Soldier and Army civilian killed in Afghanistan on October 19.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of one soldier and one Department the of Army civilian employee who were supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Sgt. Douglas J. Riney, 26, of Fairview, Illinois, and Michael G. Sauro, 40, of McAlester, Oklahoma, died Oct. 19 in Kabul, Afghanistan, of wounds received from encountering hostile enemy forces.

Riney was assigned to the Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Sauro was assigned to the Defense Ammunition Center, McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, McAlester, Oklahoma.- DoD

WFAA ABC News states that SGT Riney was highly decorated and served as a petroleum supply specialist since entering the Army in 2012.

“Riney deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from July 2014 to February 2015 and from Operation Freedom’s Sentinel June to October 2016,” said Fort Hood officials.

Riney received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and NATO Medal.- WFAA
