I will admit right up front that I am biased, having spent more time at DevGru than Jack Murphy spent in the military. That said I do take exception to your article “Next Time Send Delta or the Rangers”. I find it humorous that you choose to comment on it at all, never having been at a Tier 1 unit.

First I will give credit where credit is due.  Delta is one of two (the other being DevGru) of the most hard core and prolific group of warriors ever assembled in the history of warfare.  And Rangers are the premier Light Infantry unit in the world.

That said, let’s break things down to a digestible level.  Ask your CAG friends about the highest profile Op they’ve done lately… and you’ll hear the crickets chirping loudly.  It’s not because they are not talking about it, but because they are not being chosen to do them.  And don’t even try and use the excuse that it was only because McRaven was running the show. There have been some other Ops (post Bin Laden) that were way more technical than the Bin Laden op and it was an Army General that chose our Navy element to do it.

The real answer is… It was, and still is, OUR time.  Period.

As for the Rangers, and this goes for any battalion in the regiment, no General or President in his right mind would send in Rangers to do that job. Why? Because your previous unit’s average age is 21 with a dauntingly high turnover rate. And your most elite unit still has brand new “meats” that spent 9 weeks in Basic and 2 weeks in R.I.P. and get sent over with the 75th (also not a Tier 1 unit).

Riding on a helo with or being a blocking force for a Tier 1 unit does not make you a Tier 1 unit.  Period.

My estimate of your analysis is that you know just enough to stir the pot,  but still don’t know enough to comment.  Do not hold a unit accountable for one of their own that got out and decided to write a book. It can happen to any of us (Dalton Fury/”NAME REMOVED”).

Shift fire…

Is  anyone asking the bigger question as to why you’re selling an e-book to make money off of another book whose author is donating all profits to charity? That makes you the equivalent to a Remora…you know, the small nuisance fish that swim along side the shark for protection and scraps! That is pretty weak and it’s also your new nickname.

And it’s pretty clear to me that you and your site are all a part of the same clown show.

Respectfully,

[Name withheld]

To: Name withheld

Re: Hypocrisy & The Mirror

I happen to like Matt but also know that money was a motivating factor, and while Matt will surely keep his word and donate profits to charity, his seven figure plus advance is likely in his bank account. His new friends at Penguin are the best money can buy, their loyalty is not to him but only to his story that surely will make them tens of millions. I hope he sees the forest for the trees.

Why did SOFREP do an e-book? We planned to do e-books/World Reports when we launched our membership last month. The next big topic in the news we planned on covering and writing up via an e-book. Turns out it was one of your own that made the news.

SOFREP will blog, publish e-books and sell membership, and make money.  It’s what for-profit business enterprises do. SOFREP is not a hobby or a charity foundation.  No Easy Day is a high profile book that has stirred up a lot of drama and has a lot of people confused over why the military would be so upset over a Patriot writing a book. If you took the time to read our e-book you’d see it sheds a lot of light on the situation and isn’t a hit piece on Biss. And yes, it will make money and headlines right alongside Penguin and your squadron mate’s book. Welcome to America and Capitalism.

SOFREP is a coalition of former U.S. Special Operations personnel. The editors do their best to represent their community in a positive light to the overall public. We didn’t create the current headlines or break OPSEC, or dime him out to FOX. Headlines came and we do what we’ve always done, provide some much needed interpretation of current events (in this case No Easy Day) as most twenty-something journalists with no life experiences cannot.

The Remora comment is cute but it would serve you best to look in the mirror and reflect on the word hypocrisy, its definition and view the video below, 1:02 if you want to skip right to the “Official SEAL Team Six Operator” tell all part with TTP’s all over the place.

Hypocrisy: a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religiousbeliefs or principles, etc., that one does not really possess.

Officially endorsed projects like “Act of Valor”, BUDS 234, SOCOM Navy SEALs, and active (not former) Dev guys working with Hollywood video game production companies like EA has become ops normal. It’s also created a consumer market demand where a former teammate can get out and sign a seven figure book deal. Just ask  Biss and the LT. featured in Act of Valor (although I think his forthcoming book sold for 850k).

The timing of the book No Easy Day has caused an end to what you call “Our time. Period”.  Senior commanders including the POTUS will put the whole community in the penalty box for this. It’s game over for now and time for everyone in the active and former SEAL community (myself included) to look in the mirror and make better decisions regarding community identity.

Say hi to Turbo for me, he’s a good fucker.

Does anyone really care about this anymore? I know I don't. I have more pressing issues to worry about... Like an out of control government that can't seem to accomplish anything other than taking away my freedom!

So Brandon trained both Luttrell's, Axelson, Kyle and "Owen" when he ran the sniper school? Jesus- he's like the SEAL's version of Qui-Gon Jinn with the the guys he's taught. Your business cards should say- "Trained the guy who shot Bin Laden AND the guy who shot his extended family"

I know this is an old thread but thought this would interest folks.

From a Foreign Policy article the “details” about the Abu Ghadiya raid where “someone” (Delta?) went into Syria to take down the #1 foreign fighter facilitator for Al Qeada

“The next opportunity came a month later, in August, when a Predator strike was planned in Syria. The strike was set for the night of Aug. 13, but Abu Ghadiya moved and it was canceled. That same week, Interpol added Abu Ghadiya to one of its watch lists, and a JSOC team captured one of his deputies in a raid in Qaim, just inside Iraq across the border from Abu Kamal.”

“Finally, at the end of October, it happened. In a bold daylight mission on Oct. 26 that bystanders caught snippets of on video, MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters flew a JSOC team across the border to a building near Abu Kamal. The commandos entered the building, killed Abu Ghadiya, and took his body back in the helicopters, just as U.S. commandos would nearly three years later after they killed Osama bin Laden. The mission was structured remarkably similarly to the bin Laden raid -- with JSOC commandos working under the CIA.”

“Because the operation had been run under the CIA rather than under military authority, the Bush administration's response to the raid was sharply different from the fanfare that had surrounded JSOC's capture of Saddam Hussein and killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- deafening silence.” http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/10/01/the_generals_gambit?page=0,4

Who did the raid?  How many helicopters?  Based on what intel?

A stark difference…

6, I do not know AW's job or where he is located, but I thought of him when I heard the news a couple of days ago that over 120+ Mexicans escaped from a prison is that near the US border.   My fingers are crossed that he's not involved in that hunt, but I have been saying a little prayer in the morning for his safety just in case.

@Riceball @Liberation  I'm not gonna run the page for the reply. Tier structures and any mention of them are related to an ACCM. Just because its in the open doesn't mean its UNCLASS, as Mr. Owen is quickly finding out. So the half of the population that's discussing this flippantly are operating under a false assumption. IMHO you're discussing something the enemy can use to its advantage (i.e. organizational hierarchy and structure) I discourage it, but I'm a nobody, so you don't have to listen. See DoD Publication 5200.1, Chapter 6, Section 8 for further information.

I find it curious he is really harping on the Tier 1 thing, but some doubt is put in my argument that he correctly references the Rangers as Tier 2. Though he doesn't seem to understand the concept because he really seems to think the Tier system is really a argument that holds water.

Tier system is like a lot of people around here should know, a funding system. Therefore a lot of people seem to forget Devgru and CAG aren't the only Tier 1 guys. There is the Army ISA and hell there are tier 1 surgeons and no thats not a metaphor. Its all about funding. Rangers run around with cooler NVGs, specifically PSQ-20s before any Green Berets got them.

As far as cool missions, this whole "the SEALs got bin Laden," crap is getting annoying. Who do people think made it possible, Obama giving it a thumbs up wasn't the one who made it possible. It was SAD/SOG. When a missile hits a safe house do people think they send it in blindly? The SAD/SOG monitors it and then calls it in. They also follow around messengers to find HVTs. SAD/SOG followed the messengers that lead to OBL.

Then the cool missions nowadays seem to be killing OBL or killing pirates, which are carried out by the lowly tier 3 Navy SEALs not because they are the best, but because they are on Navy Destroys off the coast of Somalia. Maybe this guy should shoot off an email to President Obama telling him that he finds it so stupid that these lowly tier 3 guys are getting to kill these pirates and rescue blonde babes.

Either way, I think SAD/SOG are the ones doing the really important and complex stuff, following messengers while being invisible, and most Americans don't even realize they should be thanked for the OBL raid. You think SAD/SOG is very much looking for SEALs nowadays with the culture within the SEAL community? It isn't just the book. Its the movies. Its the getting paid to do stupid boot camps for the Buffalo Sabres prospects, for Gods sake they aren't professional trainers.

I'd rather be the guy who was part of the team that found the house he was in, because that was the hard part.

@Recon6  Never a fan of Pakistan considering they created the taliban and had to be threatened to break ranks with them.  I've written extensively on my thoughts on Afghanistan/Pakistan over at DoDBuzz and once here http://sofrep.com/10530/soldiers-in-afghanistan-allowed-to-load-their-weapons/.

Bottom line is we are never going to be done in Afghanistan until we fix the problem which is Pakistan.

The most interesting thing I found from the Doc Afridi article was his comment that the ISI thought the US was a greater threat than India to Pakistan.  If acccurate that is frightening considering Pakistan's India paranoia and our pending withdrawl from Afghanistan.

@shooten  @EricSmiley  I was stationed at various commands around Norfolk and Virginia Beach from 1983-1992 and I remember things changing around 1989.  We had been out for a month during workups, returned to Norfolk.  Base security suddenly had Marines on the gate and an LAV-25, prior it had been the typical young E-3 in a dress uniform.  There was usually a Petty officer in BDU's in the shack with comms and a sidearm, maybe a Remington 870, but that was it.  Lots of stuff for show but little was done to truly secure the base, especially from clandestine maritime threats.

At least we couldn't see any outward sign of improvements, who knows with the USN sea mammal training?

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
