Tonight I lost another HERO

Tonight I lost another INSPIRATION

Tonight I lost another LEGEND

Tonight I lost another bedtime STORY

Tonight I lost another BOOK TO READ TO MY SON

Tonight I lost another MOVIE TO TAKE MY KIDS TO

Tonight I lost another WHAT I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW UP

Tonight I lost another PERSON I CAN BRAG ABOUT KNOWING

Tonight I lost another COLLEAGUE

Tonight I lost another TEAM MATE

Tonight I lost another STUDENT

Tonight I lost another FRIEND

Tonight A FAMILY LOST THEIR EVERYTHING

Times like this. Times when things don’t make sense. We all tend to reflect, or at least ponder, on the what, who, when and how. But it’s the WHY that seems to elude us.

The WHY we LOST Chris can’t be answered now. It just has no answer in the moment and for that I’m deeply sorry.

The WHY we HAD Chris I can answer now, and for that I’m deeply, and forever grateful, for.

Navy SEALs have trained, operated, sacrificed and died in the shadows for many years now. “Quiet Professionals” has been their description for decades, and it is still their mantra to this day. They seek no recognition, require no reward and could care less about what we think of them. They get the job done at all cost.

Tonight when I learned that we had lost Chris, I was lucky enough to have my best friend and fellow Sniper Instructor, Brandon Webb, staying at my house. As we cracked beers and began to talk shit about Chris, the topic of his story and rise to fame as the deadliest Sniper on the planet, and in history, came up.

Brandon reminded me that Chris was my personal student and for that I should be proud. I paused and reflected and thought how lucky I was to have been in Chris’s life and to have contributed to the training that allowed him to shape the history books. As we were talking, Brandon began to share some of the challenges that our nations heroes, like Chris Kyle and Marcus Luttrell, face as they share the most intimate, painful and inspiring stories our nation has to offer. For this reason I had asked Brandon if I could take the “Floor” on behalf of these legends, and tell it like it is as I see it as their instructor, teammate, friend and most of all, as one of their biggest fans.

For me, I’m still that kid who grew up reading books and watching movies about Superheroes, Spies, and Special Forces. Kung fu was cool, Superman was pretty tough, but Rambo and the likes were God. These stories woke me up at 5:00am when I was in high school to run, bike and swim. These stories had me in Navy Boot Camp at the age of 17. These stories had me press through the most grueling training in the world. These stories had me leave my family for months on end and travel to dangerous places with a willingness to never come home. These stories had me want to give my all and drove others to give everything.

These stories shaped me and an entire generation of modern day heroes.

As you read about Chris you can quickly begin build up an impression of what type of person he was. Often times the impression we get from someone’s public persona can be very different from who they actually are. When you read about Chris it would seem that he was good old boy from Texas. Horse riding Cowboy that would carry your Grandma to church on his shoulders, stop a bully from picking on the weak kid, rope a runaway calf and change a flat tire. It would seem that he was an actual real Cowboy.

When generations ask “Where did all the real men go?,” it would seem that at that moment – almost on cue – fresh from a mission, Chris Kyle walked in sweaty and dirty, with a smoking gun in his hands, a look of concern on his face, ignoring the crowd staring at him with their jaws dropped to the floor, and simply asked “What’s for supper?”

I was blessed with the opportunity to have been Chris’s Sniper Instructor, and to get to know him as a person. Chris was an amazing student. A confident professional who was there so that he could better serve his country, community and no doubt Texas. Every time I worked with Chris I was learning as much or more from him as he was from me.

Being from California I wasn’t accustomed to working with actual “Rednecks.” To be honest, I always kind of poked fun at the stereotype; but I had no idea of the actual content and character of these guys with the funny accent and cowboy boots. Working with Chris I learned why young men played “Cowboys,” and why Hollywood produces Westerns. These guys are amazing men and spending time with them made me, and countless other SEALs, better Men.

My brother-in-law Chris Del Conte is the Athletic Director for Texas Christian University, and as a result I’ve had several opportunities to attend their games and meet a lot of “Texans.” I continue to be amazed by the Texan culture and amazing character of the people, and I can understand why they turn out heroes like Chris Kyle.

As more of our nation’s heroes tell their stories publicly, I’ve been disappointed to hear that there are people out there questioning their motives. This hasn’t made sense to me. These stories don’t belong to the authors who write them, nor do they belong to the critics who complain about them. These stories belong to America, and it is their duty to tell them. Where else would a freckled-face redhead get the crazy notion that he could be a “Top-Secret Operative” and go fight bad guys for a living?

I was reading about Chris before I wrote this and I noticed the following quote:

“As Kyle told The News in 2012 that he wrote American Sniper because “I wanted to be able to let people know about the sacrifices that not only people in the service make, but what their families go through. I knew this would give me a voice so I could speak about the guys I know who were killed. I wanted to get their story out and I wanted to raise awareness for veterans.”

So when Chris Kyle says he did something to help our Military and their families, then that’s why he did it. Like a true good ol’ boy from Texas, he said what he meant and meant what he said. Let’s not let his purpose and his mission get hijacked by all the opportunistic political commentary that is sure to come. Chris was helping veterans like he said was going to do, and that’s that.

So the Chris Kyle that you read about in books, watch on interviews, and will be reading about for years to come is not some made up public persona. The Chris Kyle that some 12 year-old kid is reading about, who believes in heroes and wants to be one someday, is who Chris Kyle really was. Chris is still telling it like he sees it – No Bull Shit.

We had the time of our lives today, could life get any better????   I participated in "The Home Front Cares, Hungry Heroes", welcoming home over 200 Ft Carson soldiers back from a 9 month deployment.  One of our  local McDonald's always provided quarter pounders, water and soda, sort of a "welcome home" treat...

We met the incoming plane at the Ft Carson Air Terminal, band playing and we cheered them on.  Of course, I always seem to push the envelope and I started a "hug a solider" fest.    I quickly was called out by the Capt of the "CO Patriot Guard Riders", she kindly told me due to regs, the solider had to extend his hand first before I could shake his hand.... A chain reaction started and the 75% of them wanted hand shakes and HUGS!!!   HA!!!   Guess, anyone looks good after 9 long months, huh?  HA!!!   Again, I probably blew it, I got big hugs with some of the guys, who still had their weapons.  Later on we got to chat with the guys, they were so happy to be HOME!!!!

I was also invited to help out and volunteer with the "Patriot Guard Rider's", they also will be fixing up houses for the returning wounded warriors this summer....   I WILL BE GOING AGAIN AND AGAIN..... I thought I'd share my fabulous day... Take care everyone....

@Copecyn924   God bless you for that! A few times, long ago, I went with a half dozen folks to greet some guys and gals coming home, and one morning almost teared up to see that there were probably 50 more people who also showed up at 0500 on a rainy, crappy day, to welcome our warriors home. And God bless the Patriot Riders - what a group! They showed up at a funeral in North Alabama because some of those idiots from that 'baptist church' group had said they were going to be there with their protest signs. The Patriots formed a wall like a barrier and the protest people never showed. Probably the only smart thing they've ever done was not showing up to face a scary-ass group of guys and gals on bikes. They might have come away with more than bad memories, because I don't think the cops in these parts would have interfered much.

@Recon6    @Txazz  Guys, wished you could have been there!!!  We were on "stand-by" all morning, flight time yet changing, which is typical.  NO BIG DEAL....

At the Ronald McDonald Volunteer dinner, for the last several years, we auction off changes to meet the returning troops.  First year, the passes went for $700.00 and last year, there were 2 people battling it out.  They had the bidding up to $1,450.00, so Ron House offered, 2 ticket each...  We are a military city and love our troops, Army and Air Force....  Have a great day, off, busy busy weekend.

Now, time to shift gears. This AM , my Jack Russell, "Uno", had decided she'd had enough,(an impatient tap tap paw slap, which she will do repeatedly until you respond to her version of"Get the Fuck Up!") and that it was time to rock n roll.So up I got up , hit some coffee, and a run. When I got I got back, I had decided it was list time. I have a feeling that Chris would not view with great positivity, any prolonged moping about. In fact, he would probably prefer to see everyone doing with a vengeance , the things we love to do with a vengeance;)-you know RUNS THROUGH, FLYS OFF OF, LEAPS OVER,CLIMBS UP,JUMPS DOWN...LATHER RINSE REPEAT.

I've uncapped my differentials ,pulled the plugs out of my breather lines and clamped em in place, rotated the 35" Trail Grapplers, put the splash guards in place under the long tube headers, loaded the recovery gear and winch/receiver....slapped a mil spec monkey  5-01-11 Geronimo E-KIA Tribute sticker, on  for luck;);  let simmer overnight; in the morning-add several hundred rnds of  7.62 and .45 Auto, a cooler full of Shiner and 6 lbs of Crawfish boudin, 2 HK's and an AR -45.  Fuel up, insert 2 ex squids and the 17#'s of 500# beast that is my trusty sidearm, UNO(Its HER FJ, not mine)...then GO LOUD!

But thats for tomorrow...right now, I'm gonna saddle up the mtn bike, and go see if I can't invert these lungs and redline the crazy away.Works everytime;)

Everyone here has their own version of the above, and hopefully you get the spirit of the post-Now get the hell out  there this weekend, and "Go Loud"(NOT STUPID!) , thats what I think would make Chris Kyle smile.

Gonna post in the other thread as well, and then I'm gonna go get busy;)

Look,

Chris Kyle was a man who put his life before others. He did not deserve to die this way. What Ron Paul said was true, it is not a slam. Chris lived by the sword (military paycheck, then book deal) and died by that very sword. It in no way says anything but the truth about him, and other before. The bible is correct, look: it is what it is, PERIOD. I am sure Chris has no regrets, nor should his friends and family. He was a good man. He supported the 2nd amendment, and supported his country.

Like it or not, he lied about Jesse. Unfortunately that will end up being what he is known for.

Remember: All the good deeds you have done in the world can be erased by your own forked tongue.

That is the lesson.

God Bless Chris and his family and friends, I know he did right, and will be in heaven.

Peace...

@mpetkus What Ron Paul said is bullshit and it misquotes the Bible. That verse about those who live by the sword will die by the sword refers to the belief that the Kingdom of God cannot be brought about by violence. Nothing more. It is not an indictment of those who take up arms to defend themselves and their country from those who do believe that the Kingdom of Allah can be achieved thru violence. So, both you and Ron Paul have it exactly and completely wrong. It may seem true to religiously ignorant people who are serving themselves and their own agenda(as Paul is doing) but to people who take Truth and the Bible seriously the falseness of your remarks ring like the bells in Big Ben. As for Chris being simultaniously a "good man" and a liar. Well, those two things can't exist in the same universe together. Good men tell the truth even when it serves them ill to do so. For your information, your love of 9/11 Truthers like Ventura and Paul doesn't automatically make anyone who disagrees with(or slugs) them liars. It's probably hard for you to make such clear distinctions but for the rest of us its quite easy and obvious where your own biases and loyalities lie, even though you declined to disclose them up front. Eye witnesses have come forward on national news programs to say they were there and saw it happen. Ventura's supporters have filed affidavits in court saying they didn't "see" it happen. Saying it "didn't" happen and saying you didn't "see" it happen are different things. I didn't "see" the terrorists board the planes on 9/11, it doesn't mean it didn't still happen and the eyewitnesses and videotape tend to support that conclusion. People like you, Paul and Ventura operate in a reality where even if you didn't see the twin towers wired for demolition, or a missile hit the Pentagon and four passenger airliners full of people just 'disappear' by the evil hand of a Zionist run government,....You're still positive it still happened anyway. And you ignore the evidence against such delusions with a stubborness that beggars sanity. You don't see the problem there but I can assure you the rest of us see it quite clearly.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
