St. Petersberg, Russia- At least one  large explosive device detonated on a subway train between the Sennaya Ploschad and nearby Tekhnologichesky Institut stations at 2:45 pm local time, which has killed at least 11 people and injured dozens. Russia’s National Antiterrorism Committee stated the metro explosion was from “an unidentified explosive device.” Witnesses described a man throwing a backpack onto the train prior to the explosion. The images of the man below was tweeted by a Russian news agency as possibly being the man responsible for the bombing.

Putin responded in a televised statement within an hour after the explosion:

Mr. Putin, in a televised statement less than an hour after the explosions, said he had spoken with the heads of the special services, including the F.S.B., as well as with law enforcement officials, who he said “will do everything to find out the causes of what had happened.”- New York Times

In 2010, the Moscow subway was attacked and dozens were killed in an attack by Chechen separatists. Below is a tweet from Telegram which shows Islamic State affiliated accounts discussing the attack.  The two groups most likely responsible for the attack are pro-Chechen separatists or Islamic State. However, no one has not claimed responsibility yet.
