This Week on SOFREP: A Slew of SOF News, Intel on AAVs, and Reports from the Front

Another week in the books, folks. And if you’re like me, most of it went by in a blur. Here’s a roundup of our coverage to help you get back up to speed.

Last week brought a slew of news from the Special Operations Community. To begin, we were stoked to celebrate the graduation of only the second female to emerge from the Special Forces Qualification Course with the coveted Green Beret. Her graduation from the program comes during a shift that’s underway inside the SOF community. The days of dip-spitting, tatted-up door-kickers are fading, giving way to smarter, more tech-savvy groups of operators that are better prepared for the threats of future battlefields

Soldiers gather to celebrate the SOF graduates.

We also reported on the ongoing investigation into the death of MSG Nathan Goodman, the Green Beret who was killed in a HALO jump accident in January. Sources confirm that a new working group was established to investigate the specific cause of the accident: some new information points to the parachute deployment technique that was used in the jump. MSG Goodman’s death reminds us that the SOF community continues to deserve our support; you can support it directly via this annual auction that gives directly to the community

Only yesterday, we published a report on how former SOF members are being recruited by companies to help secure polling stations for the upcoming November 3rd Presidential Election.

U.S. Marines with Amphibious Vehicle Test Branch, Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity, drive a new Amphibious Combat Vehicle ashore during low-light surf transit testing at AVTB Beach on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Dec. 18, 2019.

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming a new contributor to SOFREP. Matt DuPré, a former Marine Corps officer, brought us a deep dive into the history and future viability of the Corps’s beloved Amphibious Assault Vehicle in his four-part series. We suggest starting with Part I.

On foreign news, our veteran team brought you reports on the latest clashes in Yemen, a stunning admission from the FARC in Columbia, the growing violence in Armenia, and the latest from the Mali coup d’état

SOFREP gear man, Travis Pike, took a closer look at MRDSs (Mini Red-Dot Sights) and broke down a surprising contender in that category.

This week on SOFREP Radio we got an insider’s look at undercover work courtesy of Jay Dobyns, the only Federal law enforcement officer to infiltrate the Hell’s Angels. Jay’s book about that investigation No Angel, My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels is a New York Times and international bestseller. His follow-up book Catching Hell, A True Story of Abandonment and Betrayal is a bestselling memoir that details the events of his life and career.

What’s in store for next week? None of us knows. But, as always, we’ll be here to bring you the stories you won’t find anywhere else with insights and analysis from people who have actually been there.

In the meantime,

Stay frosty
