Bandar Bin Sultan and the House of Saud’s Hand in Syria

Saudi Arabia has been quietly involved in the Syrian civil war since its beginning.  The Saudis found Hafez al-Assad to be a reasonable man to work with (which is an interesting comment on Saudi Arabia, given that Hafez was a Baathist who ordered the massacre of the entire city of Hama to put down a […]

The Marine Reconnaissance Foundation

The Marine Reconnaissance Foundation was founded on June 5, 2013, in Camp Pendleton, CA.  While the MARSOC Foundation has done a lot of good for our MARSOC Marines, with the Recon and MARSOC communities moving apart, the MARSOC Foundation can’t really do much for the 0321s.  This left a gap, which the Recon Foundation is […]

MCSOCOM Detachment One Part 3: Standing Up

The bulletin to stand up MCSOCOM Detachment One came just before the Marine Corps went full-swing into preparation for Operation Iraqi Freedom.  This led to some speed bumps getting the unit actually stood up, as so many of the Corps’ resources were dedicated to the coming push to overthrow Saddam.  The Command Element was given […]

Chemical Weapons Attack in Syria

Over the last several days, Assad’s forces have been bombarding the Ghouta suburbs of Damascus, as well as the cities of Zamalka, Saqba, Jisreen, and Al-Mleiha.  The areas of Ain Tarma and Jobar have also been mentioned.  Syrian activists claim the bombardment has been primarily mortars and multiple rocket launchers, and the Syrian Observatory for […]

More Violence in Egypt

Over the six weeks since Mohammad Morsi was deposed and the Army took over control of Egypt, Morsi’s supporters have developed their own sit-in camps in the streets of Cairo.  These camps were centered on two locations–Nahda Square in Giza and the Nasr City neighborhood in Cairo, around the Raba’a al Adawiya Mosque. On Tuesday, […]

MCSOCOM Detachment One, Part 2: Formation

Shortly after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Lt. Colonel J. Giles Kyser was assigned to reinvigorate the lapsed relationship between the USMC and USSOCOM.  LtCol. Kyser had previously done a staff tour at SOCEur (Special Operations Command Europe) and had a working knowledge of how SOCOM ran.  The ranking Marine filling a billet at […]

Marine Killed at Marine Barracks: The “Trust Game?”

On August 10, Lance Corporal Cody Scott Shoenfelder died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at Marine Barracks, Washington DC.  DC Police and the Marine Corps are now investigating whether or not Shoenfelder was killed while playing the “trust game,” apparently due to the fact that another Marine was present when Shoenfelder shot […]

MCSOCOM Detachment One Part I: The SOC Program

When USSOCOM was established by the Nunn-Cohen Act in 1987, the Marine Corps declined to contribute forces to the new joint entity.  There were a number of reasons, including the Marine Corps’ belief that becoming involved in SOCOM, or even running it (it had been suggested that SOCOM be placed under Marine Corps command), would […]

Al Qaeda, Liquid Explosives and This Weak-Kneed Reactive Mess

One of my news feeds this morning popped up a breathless piece from ABC about new, “ingenious” liquid explosives being used by Al Qaeda plotters.  Inside the hype, there was some discussion of a large, “strategic-level” attack (whatever that means–any terrorist attack is by definition strategic; they are attempting to use terror to achieve an […]

Why Iraq Still Matters

I have seen a lot of reactions to any news coming out of Iraq, especially concerning the growing unrest there, that are dismissive at best.  “I don’t care what these people do to each other.”  “As long as no Americans were killed, so what?”  Inevitably, those who believe that Iraq was a horrible misstep at […]

Signed Copies of Task Force Desperate and Hunting in the Shadows

Figured I’d just leave this here.  If anybody wants a signed copy of either or both of my books, head on over to my blog and drop me an order.  I would put the buttons here, but I had enough problems getting them figured out in the original post, so I’ll just post the link. […]
