I got my M1A underlever pellet rifle from Pyramyd AIR a few weeks ago, and it’s a beauty. Instead of the synthetic stock, I chose wood because, well, I love wood. And I’m so glad I did. The wood is quite well done, which makes this look like an authentic Springfield Armory M1A that’s been maintained in immaculate condition. As a matter of fact, it looks almost too good because, upon first sight, I was admonished by certain not-to-be-named members of my family for buying yet another classic military-style rifle.

A close up of that lovely wood grain, and that’s before I rubbed it with oil.

The Springfield Armory M1A Underlever Pellet Rifle (built by Air Venturi) is a tribute to the legendary M1A rifle, bringing the feel and aesthetics of the iconic firearm into the airgun world. Manufactured under the Springfield Armory license, this pellet rifle is designed for enthusiasts who appreciate the look and handling of the real steel M1A but prefer the economy and convenience of an air rifle. In order to give mine a bit more punch, I ordered it in .22 caliber. With that size pellet, I’d still get a respectable 800 feet per second (fps) sending lead downrange.

Build Quality and Design

Did I mention the M1A Underlever Pellet Rifle is crafted with a beautiful hardwood stock that closely mirrors the look of its firearm counterpart? The attention to detail in its design is evident, making it a visually striking piece that appeals to collectors and air rifle enthusiasts alike. Weighing in at a hefty 9.9 pounds, this rifle offers a substantial feel, enhancing its authenticity as a replica. The weight of the original varied on the model, but about 10 lbs. is the middle of the range. The fixed barrel design is another nod to the original M1A, providing a stable shooting platform for better accuracy.

Performance

Powered by a spring-piston mechanism, the M1A Underlever Pellet Rifle offers consistent power and accuracy suitable for both target shooting and small game hunting. Its underlever cocking action is smooth and straightforward, requiring a moderate effort that aligns well with its robust design. The rifle is known for its respectable muzzle velocity, making it capable of delivering tight groupings at medium ranges. Its peep sights are functional and provide a clear sight picture, although some users might find them less durable compared to metal alternatives.

Accuracy and Range

The M1A pellet rifle by Air Venturi excels in delivering precise shots, particularly when paired with high-quality pellets. Pro Tip: Never cheap out on pellets. Pyramyd AIR had a huge selection of all the good stuff. If you have any questions on what to get, their customer service folks are ultra helpful.

Regarding accuracy, multiple trials in my backyard range have determined that it maintains good accuracy at distances up to 45 yards, with minimal spread. This makes it a reliable choice for plinking and general target practice. However, the rifle’s performance is heavily influenced by pellet selection, with heavier pellets generally offering better stability and accuracy. Again, this is why I chose the .22 caliber instead of the .177 model.

Usability and Ergonomics

One of the standout features of the M1A Underlever is its ergonomic design. The wood stock adds to the aesthetic appeal and provides a comfortable grip for extended shooting sessions. The rifle’s weight and balance are well-distributed, mimicking the handling characteristics of the original M1A, which is a significant plus for shooters familiar with the firearm. However, the weight might be a drawback for younger or less experienced shooters, potentially limiting its appeal for casual use.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Authentic look and feel reminiscent of the original Springfield M1A.
  • Solid wood stock adds to the rifle’s realism and durability.
  • Good accuracy and consistency for target shooting and small game hunting.
  • Smooth underlever cocking mechanism.

Cons:

  • Plastic sights are less durable and may not meet some users’ expectations.
  • The rifle’s weight may be cumbersome for some shooters, especially for extended use.
  • Performance is highly dependent on pellet choice.

Summing Up

The Springfield Armory M1A Underlever Pellet Rifle is a fantastic option for those who want a high-quality, realistic replica of the M1A rifle in an airgun format. Its combination of solid build quality, decent performance, and striking aesthetics makes it a valuable addition to any air rifle collection. The overall package offers a satisfying shooting experience that captures the spirit of the original M1A. For fans of military-style rifles and airgun enthusiasts alike, the M1A Underlever is worth considering.
