Everyone is rightfully concerned about the rash of senseless mass shootings we’ve had in the United States for about as long as anyone can remember. It seems like something we are all talking about, but few people are working on a fix.
One of the few individuals working to make our soft targets (schools, hospitals, churches, etc.) safer is former Navy SEAL Mike Lahiff. In 2018, the Philly-based frogman founded a company he called Zero Eyes with other military veterans.
ZeroEyes, a dynamic startup rooted in Conshohocken, PA, is rapidly expanding its reach across the United States, forging alliances with various organizations, including police departments, security agencies, and schools.
Established in 2018 by a team of seasoned Navy SEALs and military veterans, Zero Eyes is dedicated to curbing mass shootings and bolstering public safety. This goal is driven by a desire to improve the inefficiencies of traditional security setups, many of which are heavily reliant on manual surveillance and after-the-fact responses. Zero Eyes, in contrast, uses a proactive, AI-enabled strategy to prevent shootings.
During a recent discussion on the Founding Philly podcast, CEO and co-founder Mike Lahiff and Joe Biancaniello from the J.P. Morgan Innovation Economy Banking team shared insights into the company’s journey and aspirations. ZeroEyes secured a significant financial boost with a $20 million Series A investment led by Octave Ventures three years back, followed by an additional infusion of $23 million in 2023 to propel its expansion and cater to growing demand. The company has also established its presence in Alexandria, VA, and Hawaii, broadening its footprint.

The innovative edge of ZeroEyes’ technology lies in its seamless integration with preexisting security camera infrastructure, enabling the application of artificial intelligence to scrutinize video streams instantly. This system is capable of detecting the presence of firearms within 3 to 5 seconds of their appearance. Subsequently, a specialist at the ZeroEyes Operations Center takes charge, swiftly notifying the relevant facility managers, local law enforcement, or on-site security staff to take immediate action.
It’s not a total solution, but it is a good first step to making our public areas safer.
