The scramble for Africa continues as Mali turns to the Russian Wagner Group after France’s decision to withdraw from the embattled region.
“Sahraoui was neutralized by French forces. This is another major success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel,” President Macron wrote.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the latest terrorist attacks in the Sahel, although they bear the markings of the Islamic State.
An investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack on Goita. Mali has been facing political instability for the past year.
France will remain invested in the Sahel but has to respond to the changing geographical nature of terrorism in Africa.
“They weren’t insurgents. They weren’t criminals. They were American service members, special operators … who betrayed their fellow comrade.”
Operation Barkhane would be replaced by ” an international alliance, with all our partners, strictly limited to the fight against terrorism,” Macron said.
Macron does not have an easy road ahead in Africa. He has to stability in the continent while not stirring up anti-French sentiments.
Yet, Colonel Goita’s behavior removes any doubt that the military rules Mali despite plans for an election next year.
The beleguered country edges closer to the brink as the military detains Mali’s top political leaders.
The security situation in Mali is still precarious with Islamic jihadist violence increasing in the beleagered Sahel country.
