New intel on the Benghazi Consulate attack

Benghazi consulate attack and attacker(?)
I wanted to share this exclusive article (if you’re not reading it already) published by Fox News’ own Jennifer Griffin not more than an hour ago (current time of 1248EST/26OCT12).

EXCLUSIVE: CIA operators were denied request for help during Benghazi attack, sources say

This is a very interesting and in depth breakdown of what exactly occurred on the ground during the Benghazi Consulate attack. The “on-the-ground source” providing the intel in my opinion seems to be the real deal. I am one who understands the necessity of proper planning during a rescue operation (I’ll refer to the Battle of Takur Ghar) and the importance of knowing what the situation is on the ground, but I find it sad that a JSOC and even a Special Forces CIF team was told to stand down in nearby Italy.

Let’s discuss it below in the comments section.

The article:

By Jennifer Griffin

Published October 26, 2012

FoxNews.com

Fox News has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi that an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent attack several hours later was denied by U.S. officials — who also told the CIA operators twice to “stand down” rather than help the ambassador’s team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11.

Former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods was part of a small team who was at the CIA annex about a mile from the U.S. consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens and his team came under attack. When he and others heard the shots fired, they informed their higher-ups at the annex to tell them what they were hearing and requested permission to go to the consulate and help out. They were told to “stand down,” according to sources familiar with the exchange. Soon after, they were again told to “stand down.”

Woods and at least two others ignored those orders and made their way to the consulate which at that point was on fire. Shots were exchanged. The rescue team from the CIA annex evacuated those who remained at the consulate and Sean Smith, who had been killed in the initial attack. They could not find the ambassador and returned to the CIA annex at about midnight.

At that point, they called again for military support and help because they were taking fire at the CIA safe house, or annex. The request was denied. There were no communications problems at the annex, according those present at the compound. The team was in constant radio contact with their headquarters. In fact, at least one member of the team was on the roof of the annex manning a heavy machine gun when mortars were fired at the CIA compound. The security officer had a laser on the target that was firing and repeatedly requested back-up support from a Spectre gunship, which is commonly used by U.S. Special Operations forces to provide support to Special Operations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights. The fighting at the CIA annex went on for more than four hours — enough time for any planes based in Sigonella Air base, just 480 miles away, to arrive. Fox News has also learned that two separate Tier One Special operations forces were told to wait, among them Delta Force operators.

Unbelievable, no accountability whatsoever. No one is to blame for Benghazi despite systematic leadership and management failures that led to gross security faults. http://townhall.com/news/politics-elections/2012/12/18/lawmakers-await-benghazi-review-n1469765

What a coincidence, Hillary will not be available to testify... From the hill....The State Department told Kerry of Clinton's concussion on Saturday morning, and, when he heard, Kerry insisted that she not attend the hearing. "Senator Kerry was relieved to hear that the secretary is on the mend, but he insisted that given her condition, she could not and should not appear on Thursday as previously planned, and that the nation’s best interests are served by the report and hearings proceeding as scheduled with senior officials appearing in her place," Seth said. Clinton deputies Tom Nides and Bill Burns will testify in her place, Seth said.

The slaying of the last of my heroes.

I read American Sniper and was awed - came away with a feeling of regret for not having known about the SEALs when I was 18. That led me to the Lone Survivor - awed again, and the regret built even more. But then I read The Red Cirle and my guilt subsided as I realized I was never in those guys' league, even when I was 18.

Oh, I was no slouch. I set the school record of 810 pushups in junior high, was always athletic and strong...and was addicted to pushups...still am, to a lesser degree. I went on to earn a black belt and 2nd dan black belt in Ni Gojuryu (not Rex-kwon do) and owned 4 dojos for 8 years, and fought in somewhere north of 150 tournament bouts. But after reading Brandon's book, I realized that at one time I may have been kinda tough, but I was never SEAL tough.

Given all that, I have a hard time admiring anyone. I'm a hardass about that and don't hand out admiration willy-nilly. But I admired and respected  the SEALs after reading those 3 books.

But then, reality set in and I realize that - while they're incredibly gifted and driven - they are merely humans afterall. I admit to being a tad disappointed to read Brandon and Brent Gleason seem to defend Obama after Benghazigate. It didn't add up to me. Further disappointing me was noting that most of the other SEALs I've heard mention Benghazi, but who don't live on the West Coast, think Obama is at least partially culpable and should be held accountable before the election. Huh? Could it be that SEALs too are subject to the lowly influences of region-influenced politics? What else would explain why the SEALs I've heard offer an opinion on Benghazi were adamate that Obama has some blame, but those on the West Coast seemed more willing to give him a pass?

Sheesh! Next thing you know someone will tell me that Bruce Lee couldn't really do a double backflip from the ground up onto a 2-story building.

 @BoydCrowder If accurate, your observation is odd. You would think that East Coast guys would be close to how decisions are made up the chain. But most people here seem to be confused on the subject. I only am sure of two things: to cross a border with our armed troops and aircraft would require Presidential approval unless he delegated that authority to Panetta and the President, the NSC principals, and Panetta lack any military knowledge and are totally dependent upon the generals surrounding them.

I have no confidence in the advice they receive from risk averse general and flag officers. If they want to blame the President (and they do) he should be blamed for not picking better qualified subordinates and a more knowledgeable Secretary of Defense. I don't think he has paid any attention to staffing because he thinks that it is beneath him. I think that he is a lousy manager and depends upon leftovers from the Clinton Administration and political advisors. I think that he probably has very good judgement but no background or competent military advice.

 @BoydCrowder I agree..you are right...you didn't have what it took to be a SEAL.  All the physical toughness in the world won't count for diddly when it comes to standing for, with and beside those who might have differing opinions.  SEALs fight and die to protect (among other things) freedom of speech and the right to disagree.   I'm sorry that you only see them as supermen and have discovered their humanity and that they too exercise their rights to express their individual opinions.  SEALs think for themselves, and they protect and defend so that you can also.   As you are sitting in your nice comfortable safe place, I suggest you stop for a moment to think of the warrior who is right now in a far-away place putting his life on the line and who may be on the opposite side of your political or personal beliefs.  It won't matter to him/her that you disagree...it only matters that he/she is the one that stands between you and those who wish to silence you.   Brandon protected your right to criticize him, and that says one helluva lot about him, and not so much about you..

BoydCrowder

 Evidently you missed both my point, and the hyperbole.

It was a nice speech, though.

 @BoydCrowder  @StormR I read this:

"At this point I think that being neutral about Benghazi until the election so as not to influence it one way or the other, is not necessarily noble."

and this:"I admit to being a tad disappointed to read Brandon and Brent Gleason seem to defend Obama after Benghazigate. "

Those weren't tongue in cheek.  I'm not stupid I wasn't born yesterday.

BoydCrowder
BoydCrowder 5pts

 @StormR

 Are you even reading my posts? I offered an opinion that political leanings tend to be strongly-influenced by region, and that SEALs don't seem to be immune to that.

For crying out loud, it was mostly tongue-in-cheek to say that I  think they have no political opinions. Sheesh, I would think the Bruce Lee reference was a clue to my seriousness about thinking SEALs should or shouldn't offer political opinions.

I have not knock any SEALs here, nor would I knock any SEALs anywhere. If that's what you inferred, you got it wrong, or I worded it poorly.

StormR
StormR 5pts

 @BoydCrowder Your words speak very well for themselves.  You are using a tragedy to make a political statement and trashing a warrior's reputation to do it.   And for the record, some of those warriors protecting your sorry butt have been my family members.  I don't make speeches, but if I ever decide to do so, I know who has safeguarded me so that I can.

 @BoydCrowder I know Brandon and I have to correct your assumptions.  You're mistaking deference for weakness.  Even on the surface, this assumption doesn't pass the smell test.  These men are warriors, and they're pointy end of the spear types.

Don't make this mistake.

I'll add that if there's anyone on this planet that should be furious, it's Brandon.  And while we don't always agree I respect the living shit out of him for maintaining his calm through this.

BoydCrowder
BoydCrowder 5pts

 @Tango9 If I implied "weakness" that was not my intent.

I'm simply observing that some pretty credible military minds, some of them at the rank of general (including the former CO of the USS Cole), seem convinced that assets were in place to attempt to save our people. However, it didn't escape me that many of those saying this, lean conservative. That was my bigger point, that even those most elite warriors and senior officers, do not seem to be immune to having their opinion influenced by politics.

At this point I think that being neutral about Benghazi until the election so as not to influence it one way or the other, is not necessarily noble. The truth is the truth and Americans deserve to have access to as much of the truth as possible prior to choosing the CIC.  After all, how devasting would it be to find out 2 weeks after reelectin Obama, that he was knee deep in this and led a massive coverup? Not much chance of impeaching him given that the dems will likely retain control of the senate.

Lastly, I wish that moron Geraldo would at least learn how to pronounce Glen Doherty's last name. That seems like the respectable thing to do. Maybe he doesn't know how to pronouce it because his is the only news voice he listens to.

BoydCrowder
BoydCrowder 5pts

 @Tango9

 People from all walks of life have said that the details of Benghazi should not be revealed before the election, from Geraldo Rivera to some SEALs, and lots in between. When I say it's not necessarily noble to withhold the information, I am talking about the concept of withholding the info, not any person individually. That's why I said "it's" not "they're."

Maybe I have the semantics wrong, but that is what I meant.

BoydCrowder
BoydCrowder 5pts

 @Tango9

 Judgement? I offered an opinion using respectful language. Perhaps you prefer me to subordinate my opinions to everyone you consider a friend. Sorry, you got the wrong guy, and a confused view of free speech for that to happen.

 @BoydCrowder I'll qualify this and make it crystal:  I admire your dedication to your martial arts, that level of effort and commitment is noteworthy.

Where I take exception is when you roll in here and pass judgement on people you don't know.

For the record, I'm somewhere to the right of John Wayne in the political spectrum.  And I'm sure Brandon is thinking "JFC, Ted, Shut up already!"  but no one.  No one.  Insults my friends.  Sorta like kicking my horse, and ends with the same outcome.

 @mdupreez Go to the AFRICOM website.  Ham is still in command.  In case you think it just hasn't been updated  -  the "news" page has reports of speeches & meetings he's done since 9/11/12.

...I don't understand how that story keeps fooling people, when it only take 3seconds on google to debunk.

 @frenchieNYC Thanks. I had assumed the same and checked a number of online sources. But since at the time of my post I had seen this story on at least three other sites I wanted to confirm. I dont contribute or participate here to get into pissing contests about news, but rather contribute and learn from those who may be more informed of a specific subject.

I'm not surprised you've seen it in 3 other places  -  I've seen it at least a dozen times, the last few days (at least 3 times, just here).

I just don't understand how something like that gets legs.

TOD YOU SO:

"The CIA is said to have been the dominant U.S. presence in Benghazi, where it had a “symbiotic” relationship with the State Department consulate that served as cover for its staff. “The State Department believed it had a formal agreement with the CIA to provide backup security,” the Journal says, “although a congressional investigator said it now appears the CIA didn’t have the same understanding about its security responsibilities.”

 @JHR No operators were harmed in the making of that article. The articles and its timeline came from a CIA briefing given yesterday afternoon. As I said from the beginning, the principal purpose of the "consulate/post/mission" `was as a CIA facility. Only 7 of the personnel were State Department employees. This is why all of State's explanations have been so stupid - the place was set up for the CIA. There are still details missing, but I believe this outline is accurate.  Ironically, the only remaining mystery is why was the Ambassador there that day and why he hadn't taken his normal, larger security detail which often included the very CIA personnel who flew to Benghazi to rescue the people at the Annex.

There is little point in waiting for the State Department investigation results unless the CIA joins in the wash.

@LauraKinCA @Contagio The spokesperson states the CSG was avoided because there was no need, the cabinet members and most senior officials handled it. In my experience, the senior most people don't know the nitty gritty about how to effectively and efficiently execute. Thus asnthe article mentions, FBI is sent without operators to act as security. Which brings in that FLEET was also not sent. The top officials thought they could handle it themselves, and created a cluster foxtrot in the process.

 @Contagio

 CBS article you posted first - a couple things jumped out. What did you think:

"The response process was isolated at the most senior level," says an official referring to top officials in the executive branch. "My fellow counterterrorism professionals and I (were) not consulted."

"The official says a protocol set forth in a classified presidential directive calls for the Counterterrorism Security Group (CSG) to be convened in the event of a possible terrorist attack. According to a public military document, the directive was designed to "synchronize the efforts of all the government agencies that have a role to play in the Global War on Terrorism."

So we have a dedicated cross-trained, cross-community group that is supposed to get the red phone call at the first sign of a terrorist attack to coordinate efforts. Why weren't they consulted and why was the response restricted to the higher officials if as BHO told CBS in that tv interview (that those seconds were edited out) that it was a terrorist attack?
