French SOF Begin Hunt for AQIM Chief and Hostages

French SOF Begin Hunt for AQIM Chief and Hostages
French special operations forces based out of the recently captured town of Kidal initiated a manhunt to kill or capture the Algerian-born Mokhtar Belmokhtar, commander of the al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb for the Mali and Algerian region.

The semi-arid Sahel region

Also part of this operation is the search and recovery of the seven French hostages throughout the Sahel region of Northern Mali. Six of the hostages are held by AQIM while the seventh is held by an allied Islamist group, the MUJAO (Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa). Belmokhtar is also the commander of the newly formed Those Who Sign with Blood Brigade that recently attacked the natural gas facility in Eastern Algeria.

French intelligence believes that Belmokhtar is hiding out in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountain range in the extreme Northeast of Mali near the Algerian border- a massif that extends over 250,000 square kilometers. Intelligence and surveillance aircraft are being provided by the United States and internal sources are already stating that Britain’s Special Air Service (SAS) and the lesser known Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR) are also part of the French-led special operations task force.

With the major population centers already retaken by the French and Malian troops, most of the conventional forces could begin flying out of the country in the next week. French commandos, specifically from the 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment (1er RPIMa) will most likely take lead in all anti-AQIM high value target operations with the entire allied special operations task force stationed out of the forward operating base in Kidal.

Mokhtar Belmokhtar is truly a "jack of all trades". His abilities to bounce from terrorism to kidnapping to smuggling to arms/weapons dealings is deep. His affiliations are vast (AQ,GIA,AQIM,GSPC to The Masked Brigade, etc.) show his networking skills and give us a taste of how close these groups initially create and associate with each other. He has a knack as an entrapaneur and has been an excellent fundraiser for the jihad cause. I assume the numbers are over 20 million US dollars. For a 40 year old man, he has aged, yet is a strong fighter and adaptable. This hunt will be interesting. UBL was much more of an Icon than many people admit. When figureheads such as Mokhtar name their sons after UBL, we see a fifedom of sorts.

@JHR Mokhtar is not a true believer - he won't hold out as long as he thinks.

@Iassen Donov That is an interesting statement. He has fought alongside many battles, for many decades, for several jihad causes. He aspired to be a jihadi from childhood and has been so active in many different scenerios. If you care to enlighten me, I'd like to hear more on why he is not a true believer. Your statement "he won't hold out as long as he thinks"- ditto on that one. Now he is a public HVT, things will get rougher for him. Perhaps The Masked Brigade varies from the One Jihad/One Fight (Quran) Ideology, or perhaps Masked Brigade is a diversionary off shoot. (Like Earth First was the radical Arm to the Sierra Club) type of deal. These groups model tactics after many of our own advocacy and propaganda styles in some ways- they dig using american tactics that work-0then slamming us as pigs. I Would like to hear more, should you care to share or are able to. Either way, Thank YOU.

@lecoug  @Iassen Donov I believe he has been a smuggler, and a good one, but ONLY to fuel funds and materials for the Jihadi cause. He is a fierce and lethal kidnapper, having successfully kidnapped for ransom in 8-10 different countries-netting millions of ransom monies for the jihadi cause. He is a shrewd businessman, yet his style is reflective and his demeanor reminds me somewhat of UBL, especially in the way he speaks. Naming his son after UBL and joining the fierce battles because of the murder of UBL's mentor, tells me he is much more devouted to "the cause" than to the titile of a smuggler. His methodolgy in the various crime activities is only done to further his jihadi cause. He is considered a loyal, undaunted and devout fundamentalist. When AQIM splintered, he left due to the divergence from "the cause". He has faught in many bloody battles, he has aided in the attempt (succession?) of overthrowing a government for "the cause". The French call him "The Untouchable". He is deliberate and skillfull in his movements.

As of laste last night, meeting were being held as to whether the U.S, will put Mokhtar Belmokhtar on the U.S. List. We do nit put smugglers on "The Kill List"; WE put fierce fighting Jihadi Terrorists on this list. Just my opinion....

For many years, Mokhtar Belmokhtar has been underestimated. I be,ieve that is changing.

@JHR  @Iassen Donov i agree with Iassen - he's a smuggler first and a jihadi second.  Whilst i have no doubt he shares Jihadi beliefs actual Islamic/Sharia law is not compatible with his day job - smuggling.  Instability in that area makes smuggling easier.  He's a shrewd operator and is using the situation to his advantage. thats my take on him / the situation in anyhow

Looks like the French are making progress:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-21348335

But, if the 'rebels' get into those mountains hold up, it's going to be a daunting task to pull them out. No word on the whereabouts of 'one-eye' either. It will be interesting to see if the French can meet the 'end of March' timeline, because that's not too far off.

The name of the SOF Task Force in the Sahel is GFS Sabre (Groupement de Forces Spéciales). It is said to be the biggest GFS that the French Army has ever put together. For reference, the GFS Arès that opperated in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2006 numbered about 200 soldiers, sailors and aviators.

The 3rd Coy of the 1st RPIMa being the one specialized in desert patrols, I'm assuming it has the lead in the overall effort (just a guess...). However Navy Commandos have been seen on TV, and the AF SF unit (CPA10) is likely to be providing at least some JTACs. Another unit that is there but will probably never be seen is the Army SR regiment, the 13th RDP.

Let's not forget that the only casualty so far was an Army aviation pilot from the SOF helicopter regiment (4th RHFS).

Sidenote: the fact that the Somali rescue operation was led by the DGSE's special ops branch might(!) be explained (among other things) by the historically high level of employement of the French Army SOF in the Sahel region.

Once again, thanks for the article!

Another great article, Iassen.  You are keeping us abreast of the current news as well as educating to the max.  I can see we would not be finding out all the details in the MSM that's for sure.  Coupled with your last French Paratroopers article, this one meats out the subject.  They are way further north now in a very short time.  Still amazing the French will be pulling out so early but, at least I know why, thanks to you.

OndroRajkovic
OndroRajkovic 5pts like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Txazz One of the reasons why the French are pulling out so early is that there is EU military training mission scheduled for Mali in March or April. I expect that apart from France, the UK, Italy, Germany, maybe Spain and/or Portugal plus few other countries will send their military instructors to Mali. A lot of them have experience from OMLT/MTT missions in Afghanistan and Iraq and that could prove handy.

Plus, there is one another thing - French army has multiple bases in the area and they're not shy to use them. If that doesn't work, the 11th Para Brigade is based only some 3100 km away and as we already know, the French aren't shy about using their airborne units.

We've been talking among ourselves about topo maps for Mali.  Goggle earth is "OK" but a nice topo gives a better feel.  But I must say pictures of the localities are even better.  I've taken to doing image searches for various Malian cities and villages and you would be surprised at what you can find.

It's not a country, or a government, or a series of either, it's an ideal and an ideal is the most complex enemy you will face. Until the folks up in Washington realize that and starting thinking about ways to smother the 'ideal' on the many fronts where it can breed, then we will be doomed to see the actions happening in Mali all over again, just in a different country ad infinitum.

@Txazz Indeed, if you don't learn from your mistakes, you are bound to repeat them. Admitting there is a problem is the first step to finding a solution. But there is too much narcissism in Washington for that to happen.

People, organizations and governments all over the world are watching as we shrink back from taking the lead, or at least backing up our allies. Just like in the jungle, this will be seen as a sure sign of weakness, further endangering our citizens and interests, both here and abroad

@AUNITEDPEOPLE This paragraph says it all-from the Pentagon!!!

The French defense establishment had the grace to be embarrassed by their government's choices in 2003. The Obama Pentagon has not expressed similar embarrassment, either with regard to Mali or generally. It is from the Pentagon that the demand for reimbursement emanated. Nor is the fault confined to political civilians. Gen. Martin Dempsey has said the United States did not want to be complicit in any Israeli strike on Iran. If I were in Tehran, I would interpret that to mean we would deny Israel assistance. Denying France assistance now will reinforce the perception -- both among allies and enemies -- that U.S. allies are on their own.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
