Inspired by all the creepy shits out there that try to intimidate people of all shapes and sizes, including a lot of my female friends..

So I get asked self defense tips all the time by woman friends of mine.  While a firearm has its place in the home, it has serious lifestyle restrictions, especially if you live in California or travel frequently.  Plus, most indoor ranges are operated by scum bags with egos that would rival a Navy SEAL.  That, and most of the clerks look like those two creeps manning the pawn shop counter (the gimp scene) in the movie Pulp Fiction.

Training is important, too!  If you want to use a firearm, you better train with it. Most women I know are afraid to go to most of these ranges unaccompanied to practice shooting.  It’s just plain uninviting to women, and most beginners; Period.  I personally don’t like going myself for a lot of the same reasons.  I’d open my own “women/new shooter” friendly fucking range if it weren’t so damn expensive (ventilation units are in excess of $250k…ventilation people!!).  That, and I’d make it a cool place. I’ve talked this over with my friend and famous Fashion Stylist Sally Lyndley over many a glass of wine in Manhattan.

On the training note:  You don’t just train to use a gun on the range, then check the box with an “I’m good-to-go in a pinch”.  Just operating a firearm safely doesn’t cut it.  You need to train like you fight.  That means scenario based high stress training, and if you don’t know what that is, then you’re not prepared to defend yourself with a firearm.

Ladies, you need to train until you are taking down creeps as effortlessly as you shop for clothing.  How do you do this? You end up spending a whole lot of money.  Because good, practical instruction on self defense with a hand gun takes good instruction. Not too many out there can give it, and there are plenty of posers taking advantage. So be warned! You wouldn’t believe the Spec Ops Douche Bags (SODBs we call them) roaming the bar and indoor ranges these days.  My friend and former SEAL Teammate Don Shipley busts these phonies daily; His video is below.
‘

‘
So be careful who the hell you trust when training, because most are douche bags.  Send them to me or Don or SOFREP.com for verification.

The serious problem that exists for women today:  According to RAINN, 1 in 6 women stand the chance of being sexually assaulted and around 15% of college girls stand the chance of some DB sexually assaulting them!

Douche bags and creeps are running a muck out there ladies, and you can’t always go running to your Navy SEAL boyfriend to bail you out.

An intelligent dip shit with a little motivation can ruin your day, night, or even life.

What to do?

Well…. I have a secret I’ll let you in on.

There’s a non-lethal tool (not a gun or knife), long used by Navy SEALs.  It will fit in your purse, can be checked through airport security, and is also pretty useful and stylish all by itself.   It will blind an assailant and break his fucking nose if necessary. Pretty nice if you ask me.

What is it?  A Surefire tactical flashlight, that’s what. And you will not find it at Barney’s anytime soon.

SOFREP_WOMENS_SELFDEFENSE_FLASH_LIGHT

It comes equipped with a 200 lumens high power LED bulb that lasts for 1.9 hours and (BONUS) it has a rapist DNA sampler on the tip (what I call the spikey end of the light).  In most cases, the light blinds your opponent so bad that he’s screwed, and you’re high tailing it out of there.  We normally use this in the SEAL Teams to blind bad guys during  hostage rescue room entries. While they’re figuring out what happened to their sight, we are giving them a lead Excedrin headache.

I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s one of the best damn self defense tools in the world for men and women.  I carry one all the time and will blind you if you piss me off.

Ladies, you will use it everyday and become very comfortable with it.  Just remember to go easy when you’re practicing jabbing your boyfriend with it, this thing is dangerous and will break skin.

So go buy a Surefire light ladies (click on the image).  You’ll have it for the rest of your life, and it’s a more sophisticated way of handling things.  The best is that you don’t have to dirty up your Rick Owens boots fending off the creep parade.

Maybe Surefire will hire Sally to design a ladies model, it would be money well spent!

Check SOFREP.com for our monthly column on ladies self defense, by guys who know.

Fenix makes some very nice lights as well. I'm very fond of my PD32 (315 lumens when needed).

I have to say, if the guys here at SOFREP follow through, this site will be one of my favorites. I have no doubt you fine gentlemen will continue in your service to the citizens of our nation, in this new role. Honestly, my experience working in the photolab, doing TAD assignments at Little Creek, Norfolk, Oceana, Rota, Sigonella, and many other stations has taught me that at least the SEAL community has a culture of education and sharing. I'm sure of the other branches as well. So I would expect nothing less.

Jessbvg, I sent my wife and daughters up to Sig Sauer Academy in Epping, NH. They have Handgun 101, 102, 103, and 104 classes -- and if you want non-coed they have some that are just for women (my wife did that for the first couple and decided that she was really okay with coed). I know others will post good recommendations, too, but my experience up at SSA has been nothing but first class (and there is a barbeque place about 5 minutes away that will make you feel like you're home!)

They don't care what brand you shoot, by the way, and they have loaners you can use if you want. If you decide to give them a try, and decide to bring your own, I strongly recommend that you do NOT fly into Boston Logan but into Manchester NH (which is a great regional airport located in a gun friendly state).

Of course, many people rave about Gunsight, but I haven't had the chance to go out there yet (my wife and I will do their "week long" training someday, I hear it's great).

Hope that helps!

*very excited about weekly posts*

I certainly feel the before mentioned pain of awful sales people at gunshops. (If in doubt, please note I am a female and I live in Alabama. "Gosh, suga, why would a pretty thing like you need a gun?" Golly gee, I just don't know but it definitely won't be purchased here.)

So at the risk of starting an online war with this, I feel the need to make a statement: If I worked at a gunshop where most of the clientele consisted of people with little to no knowledge, appreciate, or respect for guns (much less have a plan of how to use or defend themselves or their families) I'd probably not be so jovial at my job, either :)

On a different note, can anyone recommend an instructor who offers weekend or weeklong self defense courses? (featuring firemarm or above mentioned super flashlight instruction) Not opposed to travel, I believe this is important enough to devote extensive time and effort to. I have recommendations for local gun ranges but I think I'll have to go out of state for actual instruction.

Woke up this morning, it's less than 20 F outside so me and my girls worked on our stretches and calisthenics. I just sat down with my morning coffee, having made breakfast for all of us. My mind has been thinking about this line of posts all night. Brandon, we need the input from you and the other guys here at SOFREP more often than once a month. I've survived many a Shore patrol, and a couple of Bar fights. Generally I have been lucky enough to avoid physical conflict. Even though I have worked out, studied martial arts, received firearm training, and studied basic criminal justice, I just don't have the real world combat experience. My time in the USN as a Photographer allowed me to support many different missions but I experience no direct action. I know there are many others in the same position. We all look forward to your continued help.

I have to remark though, most gun shops and ranges do have a large contingent of Douche Bags. Most of the true professionals are quite unassuming. Lead by example types. A couple of the shops in my area are staffed by these young "Tactical" guru types. Makes it kind of tough if you don't see through the BS.

I almost laughed out loud. I must be a real dinosaur, 'cause I can't see any thing stereotypical in here. Squids are by nature always on the make. Some are more gentlemanly than others, but honestly I see nothing unusual here. I actually see some of Col. Cooper's maxim's in play. Ride, Shoot straight, and tell the truth. Old School, but it has kept me and mine out of harm's way.

That would be awesome if somebody who was cool could open up a shooting range/gun shop. I hate going and buying guns from any shop here in Tennessee, they are all douche bags. They always ask you if you have a carrying permit like they are some kind of authority figure (I know sometimes they are trying to get you to take their class but most of the time they are being a douche). And they are always the end all know it all. The day there is a cool gun shop/range I think I'll faint and I will also travel to were ever you built it to see it for my own eyes. (This article is hilarious. And the video is both awesome and weird. Loved the guy who photo shopped his head on that suit, that was genius. That port bellied bastard was cool too)

I've always compared going to the gun range/shop to the comic book shop, people with no other interests, personalities, who tend to over eat. More SEALs, SF, Marine & AF SOC should open more gun shops.

Great post. My wife works 2nd shift in a very tough neighborhood and although there is security, I have made sure she has several defensive tools at her disposal. The E2DL was the first, and so far the best, tool I have given her for protection. I too like the idea of a more professional shooting range, and one that is certainly female friendly. I took my wife shooting at one of the new Gander ranges and the range master hovered behind us the whole time while I was instructing her. He never offered any additional tips or even showed a hint of personality, just stared. With the incredible growth of women purchasing firearms over the past 12 months, and the expansion of groups like the Women's Tactical Association (WTA), retailers and ranges would be smart to pay more attention to their female customers.

Brandon,

Great post. I was going to mention that the ladies (and the gents too) need to learn how to use a light like this in a high stress situation. Just like using a bunch of keys as a weapon, there are some basic techniques that need to be learned and an attitude that needs to be adopted when moving in potentionally dangerous areas. Fortunately some of the other posters beat me to it and provided some links to useful information.

Keep up the good work,

Larry

I'm a Site Supervisor for a national security company, at most of our posts we are unable to carry due to legal restrictions. I started carrying a Surefire 6p back in 2005 and absolutely agree that it is the most versatile tool I own. My wife has a hard time with firearms, being a city girl plus growing up in Iran. She just lacks the confidence despite the years of effort I've put into instruction. But she absolutely excels at Jeet -Kundu and the Surefire fits in beautifully with our hand to hand sparing. Something about these Iranian girls, they want to kick your ass, up close and personal.

I sense a lot of pent up social repression.

I look forward to this continued post, especially since I also have two daughters. Thank you Brandon.

I carry that very model of E2D, and the added benefit is that it has a rapist DNA sampler on the TAIL as well! I love my Surefire (though it took a lot of explaining, including some discussion with an instructor at Sig Sauer Academy, for my wife to let me part with the $$$ to buy one for a "low light" course.

You bring up some excellent points, all valid. I have a wife and three daughters -- they are all getting brothers of my E2D this week.

The bright light, plus the strike edges, make for a great unassuming weapon.

But like the gun, you have to put in plenty of hours into the training.

It's my opinion that the most practical martial art to give you a proper background on how to wield

the Defender, or other impact weapons, as well as point and edge is Eskrima.

I visited Cebu to learn Filipino martial arts a couple of years back. I'm now stationed in the LA area.

Here's a couple of sites to get you primed:

http://hollywoodkettlebells.blogspot.com/2010/05/balintawak-grand-master-nene-gaabucayan.html (find a backyard group, less formal with a friendly atmosphere, there are plenty)

Brandon,

I don't know if the Defender and other similar lights (with strike bezels) are actually listed as contraband with the TSA, but I've heard of these flashlights confiscated by TSA. Just FYI. These guys are the number 1 source of theft in airports so keep a sharp eye out when you go thru their checkpoints.

SteveBryant
SteveBryant 5pts

TSA?????? the trick is to keep the good stuff in your main bag and the bastards don't have the opportunity to steal em...Yes i know....it's SAD but it is what it is...KEEP your stuff hidden the best you can....checked baggage...

Stryker
Stryker 5pts

@SteveBryant

TSA also checks checked baggage. Keep an eye on your most important items when you travel.

It use to be that ramp rats (the people who work baggage thru out the airport) were the ones swiping stuff from your luggage, now since the TSA checks them, it's the TSA that's found stealing.

We can't win.

SteveBryant
SteveBryant 5pts

The trick is to ask em for a receipt for what they have "confiscated"... often they will take these things for their personal use but if you ask for a receipt or a document saying that your possesion has been confiscated the i think you'll find they will be a bit more ermmmmmmmmmmmmmm linent......at the end of the day they aren't above the law and you do have rights! so exploit those rights...

Indeaqua

I have always struggled with the idea of owning a gun, as I feel that proper training and knowledge are important if I am going to have a weapon that actually needs to be registered. I like this it is functional and something people won't think of off top. Thank you for the info, you're my new fav!

SteveBryant
SteveBryant 5pts

To own a gun whether registered or not is NOT is not important...what's important is the Teaching of the Do's and Don'ts...the respect and value of life as taught to me by my Dad and my brothers back at an early age...It provides the foundation that one needs to know as far as what's acceptable and what is not... ANYTHING can be registered by qualifications but qualifications can NEVER teach you the respect and value of life... THOSE come from proper teaching and a pure heart... For those who aren't sure then the best advice is....do a bit of research and buy a SUREFIRE... don't worry about the money cause when it comes to SUREFIRE you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR...besides, these days it's a lot cheaper to buy lithium batteries than it is to buy .45 rounds..... :) I personally prefer the .45's

What I tell many of my HOT lady friends, many are Welsh decent, is to become a volunteer police officer in LA, NYC or Chicago (stay away from po-dunk towns). If you're single, professional and hot, stay away from the gun scene and martial arts scene, it's a sausage fest. Volunteer to get the police/legal perspective, for connections and for the training, it's all FREE. Have a legit day job, and do this as a hobby. The learning curve is going to be steep, but hang in there for the FREE training.

I agree totally.... I have one of the older versions, the 150 lumen model, and it by far is the best one I've had... the low beam offers excellent runtime, but even the full beam, for what you get and the amount of runtime you have it for is at the very least IMPRESSIVE! Folks laugh at this little thing until they get the receiving end of the beam in their eyes... From my job to tactical uses to you wouldn't believe it...but even medical uses that a maglight won't even attempt... The E2D LED is the way to go... Hell....it may be small but nothing to laugh at... dynamite comes in small packages!!!

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
