Israeli Special Operations Units: Part One

When people think about the IDF special operation units, usually two names come to mind:

  • The First Gays In Special Operations Units

Sayeret Matkal and Shayetet 13

Sayeret Matkal

The Chief reconnaissance unit, is primarily known for the daring rescue in Entebbe in 1976 and the assassination of a leading Palentinean terrorist in Tunis. Similar to the US Army 1st SFOD-D (Delta), their specialty is deep reconnaissance and counter terrorism outside the borders of Israel.

Shayetet 13

These are the highly specialized naval commando unit, similar to the US Navy SEALs. Shayetet 13′s missions include sea-borne counter-terrorism, sabotage, recon and hostage rescue. Their missions remain for the most part classified but they took part on every major conflict Israel was part of, and some very successful operations deep inside Hizballah controlled Lebanon during the 1st and 2nd Lebanon wars.

While these two units are the most famous, there are a number of other units in the IDF that are equally good and perform a variety of highly specialized tasks.

Sayeret Maglan

Sareyet Maglan is a highly classified long range reconnaissance unit that is trained in missiles warfare, or rather the search and destroy of enemy rockets, rocket launchers and other ordnance. They might, on occasion, act as laser target designators for the Air Force. There is a rumor circulating in Israel, that Sayeret Maglan was among the very few IDF units that covertly participated in the search for Iraqi Scuds during Desert Storm in 1991.
> > The unit, founded in 1986, became known only in 2006, during the 2nd Lebanon war, where successfully hunted and destroyed Hizballah’s rokets and bunkers.

SOFREP_IDF_SOF

Shaldag

Shaldag (Special Air-Ground Designating Team) is one of the Israeli Air Force special operations unit. Similar to the US Air Force Combat Controllers, Shaldag is tasked with targeting enemy structures, vehicles and other resources for assault by Israeli jets or helicopters, preparing the ground for possible airfields, special reconnaissance and sabotage. One of the rumored missions this unit took part of was the 2007 IDF strike of the the Syrian nuclear reactor. This included an infil deep into hostile Syria and covert communications.
Shaldag was founded in 1974 by a Sayeret Matkal veteran. The unit operated as a Sayeret Matkal reserve company and it was eventually transferred to the IAF.

Duvdevan

SOFREP_idf-duvdevan1

Also known as the “mistarabim”, Duvdevan conducts undercover kill or capture operations against terrorists in the west bank. Duvdevan operators look like arabs, speak the local dialect fluently, drive modified civilian vehicles and generally are extremely hard to spot as being soldiers. They spend years training to blend in, close quarters combat, counter-terrorism tactics and highly specialized hand to hand combat.

In part two we’ll see other special operation units, such as Egos (the guerilla and anti-guerrilla warfare unit), 669 (the Israeli Air Force PJs), and others.

Cool article ... it made remind of the movie with Jason Borune :)Anyway the arab and muslim country environment is so complex, a little like also the north african and the Italian environment that I guess these special operation forces are an asset for today counter terrorism operation by the U.S. (which is totally targeted as muslim World). I don't know why they don't mind their business, but I guess they do by selling tech to Israel and making their industries prosper through war ... it has always been like that since the conquest of North America ... There's no fault ... it's the european man, it's many greedy human nature problem.

I found very cool these SOF groups and I regret that the talks has been and are political some how but I guess it's cool to see so many people share views and opinions, open minded, narrow, hard or soft they are with others from other parts of the World.

I was expecting the presence of "Mossad" explanation in the article but I haven't seen it.It's cool to find this also because is very well known the bond between U.S. and Israel and it cannot be uncovered the part of the U.S. is run by the decisions of "external" stakeholders who are guess what ? coming from middle east ...

I hope to find more also about French Special forces (since they are totally plunged into the North african issues since probably an hundred years and in many more geografic zones) I hope to see a other muslim countries account over their sof or an operation.About the "Brotherhood of warriors" book that was mentioned in one of the comments below here, I would like to read an account or analysis about the DEZENGOFF MALL  plan\attack that seems to be really connected to the article we all read above about Israel SOF.

Best  regards

@a_wiardy It's a called a Mitznefet. It helps break the shape of the human body. Sort of like the head cover of a ghillie suit.

@Angryman I've seen pictures of WWI British Snipers with much the same head gear.  There is a sight named "AllWorldwars" that has an interesting library and media available that features some of these items.

Wow! Cool article! I didn't know countries like Israel had such elite SOF units. I've always had the impression that Middle Eastern countries had generally weak militaries, but again that was living off of assumption influenced  by the media.

@ScottGuinn Some of the best SOF units come from (organized) middle east countries.  Jordan is one that comes to mind when it comes to getting shit done.

Just to clear things up, when I say SOF units in middle east countries they are more about subterfuge and counter intelligence.

ScottGuinn

It's cool to see that these countries have a line of defense against terror threats, especially since they're more vulnerable to the attacks due to their location. Thanks for the reply and insight!

A good book to read is Brotherhood of Warriors by Aaron Cohen.

Gengiskhan6
Gengiskhan6 5pts

@ericfine50  Very clear are the reviews about that book over amazon. There is only one third of the book that should be read. If I can I always check what the people that give 1 2 and 3 stars have to say before being seriously intentioned to buy a book. I guess they aren't envyous or crazy. So really there must be a part of the book which is deeply interesting but the rest really doesn't ... it's normal, it's not a cultural book. If people who have a culture and want to learn from everything they do and read get to read this book it's not a strange fact that they wont appreciate it. Often military books have parts that are really interesting. Other things are really blunt and often very orthodox or non orthodox but anyway really extremist ways to see life that people with a culture don't find useful because they were there a long time ago and now they see things with a much wider way.

Regarding the book I wish there was a way to get the 1/3 of it without buying the whole book.

It is said in the reviews that The warrior elite and choosen soldier are very good instead. Those are "blockbuster" that I really still want to read and have to read.

In my humble opinion as a member of the IDF that is a terrible book with a skewed perspective and you will be better served actually talking to a member of the IDF or reading a more mature piece such as http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Soldier-Israels-Greatest-Commando/dp/0871136376/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1331724170&sr=8-6

@JMattHicks Maglan were one of the most useful SOF units of the Israeli military in the '06 war in Lebanon. They did most of the heavy lifting in wiping out Hezbollah's ability to hit Tel Aviv.

So uh, wtf happened on the "freedom" flotilla? I certainly hope whoever went full retard and planned that mission got fired.

Gengiskhan6
Gengiskhan6 5pts

@Jawbone In those cases I guess there are intel coming, the SOF not even get an idea of what they are doing and they are so brain washed over the "enemy" that they think they have the most nasty and vicious terrorists in front of them when they have just alternative thinkers and people who really have a culture and know what they are doing buy supporting the rights of oppressed humans by all means and objectively speaking. The problem is that war is a business it has been denatureted completely. It's not anymore ...(problably has never been fully) a way to solve things but it's like soccer it's not anymore a sport because of the business undergoing under it today. The same far war it's not a practice to solve problems but a business. Who is doing it is not interested in solving a damn thing.

It's well known that the community (which are undeveloped and living in ancient ways people) of Haredis is growing in Israel and all around the world. The problem is that they are uneducated and economically speaking that is a problem for the future of Israel it seems. The politics in israel are totally run from a ultra orthodox and military war mongers guys. I mean ... have you ever critically analized what kind of news press comes out from the mouth of ministryis in Israel ? From the women to the men ? I mean it's really harsh and another world statements! It's like when Berlusconi said that Obama is cool because he's "tanned". I mean this might be a peaceful claim but it's totally crazy, and can provoke issues, israeli prime ministers and co. claims are very hard, they think that keeping under fire barrage the population is a good idea, they think lives are expendables ... these are clear (***racist***) statements by israelian personnel first members of the govt. Check them out and use your (our) often sleeping sense of critical analysis and opinion ... Stay awake! We are talking (like in the U.S. and more then them) of a totally young (less then 60 born) and new statehood that is making a lot of errors of course...

Angryman

@Jawbone what would you have done if you were a soldier in the Shayettet, tell the people at the supposedly peaceful flotilla that they were about to be boarded, they did not complied, then when boarded you found that that this peaceful people are in fact not so peaceful and are coming at you with firearms, knives and RPGs? Oh, did I mention that explosives, parts to build bombs, more weapons, rockets and other "friendly" supplies were found on the boat?

yeah, I guess they were wrong in killing those "peaceful" boat people...

Riceball
Riceball 5pts

@Angryman All I know about that op was that the Israeli's pretty much played right into the hands of the PLO(?). Whether or not the people on the boat were truly peaceful or not or were smuggling weapons or not I strongly suspect that the whole was set up in order to make the Israeli's look bad. I think that no matter what they did the Israeli's would have looked bad and eaten crow; do nothing they would have looked bad at home, do what they did and they look bad to the rest of the world. Damned if they did, damned if they didn't.

Gengiskhan6
Gengiskhan6 5pts

@Angryman @Jawbone @OPR @JackMurphyRGR @LCpl X Israel, Europe, U.S. are behaving like the settlers and invaders of the Americas did with the native indians population with the palestinians. It's just the same. It's a shame. Israel is doing everything to unleash violence, undermine peace, (with Israel I mean the government and business stakeholders not the Israelian people which are open to peace talks ...) just see the delegitimation of the Hamas government legally elected and much more. Anyway I don't agree with war mongers or people who see terrorist on every arab like face that's what unfortuntately many people do ... many of these people should have been hired for a part on "Harold and Kumar go to Guantanamo Bay" movie ... those people that think that the world is a big movie itself and that human rights are a joke ...

@Riceball As it usually is. it doesn't matter what Israel does, the Arab world, the Europeans and pretty much everyone else, except the US, will say: Evil Israel!

I wish some of those reporters would actually live in israel for a while. Moreover, I wish they would have lived in israel during the horrendous initial months of 2002 when there was a suicide bomber pretty much every day on buses, cafe, schools, in both Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Then they will understand, maybe...

in any case, it doesn't matter what Israel does, or does not. It is always at fault.

@Angryman Hey I never said that the intent was wrong. I was all for sending that boat to the bottom of the sea, I just thought the execution looked like a 3rd grader was the oic.

Gengiskhan6

@Angryman It's well known the disinformation that goes on like on FOX news the same on (italian) studio aperto (by berlusconi) or on israelian (extreme righted controlled\orthodox extremist country) televisions. Disinformation and "information" is actually one of the duties that the IDF and the military apparatus uses to control wars and decide how they go and how they appear to the world and much more. Those boats are peaceful boats that try to break the naval blockade operated ILLEGALLY by the Israel Govt.

OPR
OPR 5pts

@Angryman  @Jawbone Actually, fast roping onto a boat of "unfriendlies" is fine so long as you have a plan. It's the part about literally fast roping INTO a crowd of "unfriendlies" that's the problem.

@Jawbone  OK, I give you that. Fast roping onto a boat full of unfriendlies is not ideal, but given the circumstances they had no choice. I agree that it was rushed and they should have maybe disperse the crowd before attempting to board, on the other hand these were supposed to be peaceful people...

Maglan and Egoz had a really tough time fighting Hezbollah in '06 in direct operations.

Sayeret Matkal had one officer severely wounded after a joint covert insertion with Shaldag during the 2nd Lebanon war went awry (they stumbled onto a Lebanese checkpoint). But they did another operation together in that war that was very successful.

From what I read about the Egoz Recon Unit is that it's considered to be the Israeli Army's equivalent to the 75th Ranger Regiment. Anybody got info on that?

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
