Female Spy or Not: Travel Safety For All Women

Travel Safety For All Women
For decades, women have become increasingly more important instruments of collection, targeting, and even well-crafted assassination missions. These highly trained and skilled woman are part of every countries most elite teams.

The Mossad utilized females in the Dubai Assassination of a Hamas Leader. The Russians put one of their best, Anna Chapman, here in the US to spy and collect through “sexpionage” – more to follow on her in a separate article (you will love it, she was a freak!).

Over the years some great lessons learned have evolved that have allowed them to get in and out of hostile environments undetected. With these lessons learned, I have sifted and collected the pertinent personal security points that relate to women traveling alone.

Below scrapes the surface to what woman should and shouldn’t do to blend in, decrease exposure, and ultimately elude any potential threats. Pass the word!

Personal Security Tips for Women

  • Limit the amount of information shared about your travel plans – before and during the trip.
  • Use covered luggage ID tags and remove upon arrival.
  • Dress and behave conservatively, as appropriate for the local culture.
  • Observe local customs as much as possible and try to learn unintended implications of your personal behavior, mannerisms and dress.  For example, smiling, making eye contact or touching males can be misunderstood in some cultures.
  • Keep alert for anyone who seems to be following you or takes special interest in you.
  • Vary your daily routine. Never take the same route to or from your hotel and vary the times of your comings and goings. This will make it more difficult for someone to target you for an assault or kidnapping.
  • Carry your handbag on the side away from the street to avoid grab-and-run attacks.
  • Stay at reputable hotels and avoid rooms by elevators, hallways or terraces.
  • Choose a room above the ground floor but not higher than the seventh floor for fire safety purposes.
  • You are at your most vulnerable arriving and departing from your hotel.  Don’t linger in the public space around the hotel, the parking lot or indoor garage.
  • Use a door alarm, carry a whistle and keep a self-defense weapon near your bed (a fishing weight wrapped in a handkerchief makes a great weapon).
  • Consider carrying pepper spray or spray deodorant.
  • Carry a high lumens flashlight. Brandon recommends the Surefire P2X Fury Dual Output LED.

Tips to Prevent Sexual Assault

  • Wear clothing that is hard to remove. Avoid tight-fitting clothing and make-up.
  • Consider wearing a wedding or similar ring, even if you aren’t married.
  • Remember, assaults can also be at the hands of acquaintances, so choose fixers, interpreters and drivers carefully.
  • Avoid wearing anything that could be grabbed – jewelry, ponytail, etc.
  • In case of a sexual assault attempt, yell loudly and smash or break items.  Tell the attacker you’re pregnant or have AIDS.
  • Urinating or soiling yourself in the event of an impending attack may be a deterrent.
  • Carry a condom…it may prevent you from getting AIDS if you can’t fend off the attacker.

Women, please add to these with your personal experiences, and send this article to anyone who could benefit. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up!

Thasnk you. A few of these would not have occured to me. I  want to ask you: Do you feel in your experience that is is not a good idea for a women to travel alone anywhere? I lived in NYC alone for many years but that is entirely different. I am talking about Italy, Miami etc?

Wasp spray for self defense is a bad idea. It is a myth! Stick with the Pepper Spray. Wasp spray is unproven and has never been tested on humans. Wasp Spray will NOT work on those who cannot feel pain i.e. drugs or alcohol. Pepper Spray is an inflammatory which will cause the eyes to slam shut no matter the situation. That’s why over 40,000 law enforcement agencies carry it nationwide and even the smallest canisters will fire 10 ft while the larger canisters will fire 25 to 30 ft. This link explains it well: http://www.14news.com/story/18110708/wasp-spray-not-just-being-used-on-insects

Pepper spray or Oleoresin Capsicum (OC Spray) can deter potential threats, however, this too can have little effect on some people depending on many factors including their sobriety.  As a law enforcement officer, I have been exposed to OC spray and have seen suspects exposed to it.  In most cases, it effects the officers using the spray more than the suspect.  In a lot of cases the suspect feels no effect.  Mose officers I know choose not to even carry OC spray as it is generally considered to be less-than effective....  It can be a good tool, although no one should put all of their faith in any product or device.  The will to survive and violence of action mindset is the best bet when dealing with the wolf...  Stay safe.

First things first, I'm nobody special.

Secondly, you seriously underestimate yourself. A difficult or unfulfilled childhood may be the greatest obstacle for you to personally overcome. If I were to guess your greatest fault, it is that you are overly self critical to a degree that undermines your self confidence. Give yourself a break. You have a sharp mind, quick wits, and a situational awareness that is very rare. You have much to offer, but you won't realize that until you accept yourself. Once you make peace with and accept yourself, you might view the world and your place in it in a much better light.

I'm not a go to church type, but I don't believe the world we are in is just a series of random people and events on a spinning ball as it makes its through the universe. You might find that exploring the spiritual side of life is worthwhile and life changing in a positive way. As they say, there are no atheists in foxholes. It is possible for you to be a "Spiritual Warrior" who explores, struggles, and fights her way to a better understanding of who you are and why you are here. FWIW, I continue to struggle to understand and comprehend my own Christianity. "All will be known In the fullness of time." I'll get off the soap box now, but leave you with this to ponder;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desiderata

Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shams, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

Just another tidbit. The foaming wasp spray makes a great substitute for mace. It'll cause blindness until the you get to the hospital and get an antidote. My wife keeps a can by the .45 on her side of the bed. haha "Babe blind his ass, then shoot him." You get 20' of range out of it and it doesn't draw near as much attention when you aren't using it.

A few things:

* STAY OFF YOUR CELL PHONE!  You need to be aware and watching what is around you, not distracted by the family/work back home.  Let it go to voicemail, it doesn't have to be answered till you are somewhere safe.

* Follow your gut.  Women are often afraid being rude or "witchy"...that twinge of unease you feel just may save your life.

* make sure you can MOVE in your shoes.  Heels are "pretty" but can you get out of a bad situation (this applies even to here in the US...how many women hobbled out of NY after 9-11, simply because they didn't keep "safe" footwear at thier desk)

Excellent point, especially at night in an unfamiliar hotel. KNOW where your room is located and where you need to go to get out via the nearest and alternate emergency exits.

FLASHLIGHT needs to be on your nightstand with your CELL PHONE and with SHOES immediately below on the floor. If you can't evacuate, fill bathtub with water and soak a couple of towels. Put one at the bottom of the door to prevent smoke from filling your room and have another handy to help filter your breathing air if necessary. If wet doesn't work try a dry towel as an air filter.

Go only to places that you personally know of, or are recommended by RELIABLE sources.

Staying closer to your hotel is safer.

Have a map. Know where you are, and where you're going. ***SA (Situational Awareness)***

There have been reports of cab drivers taking passengers to remote places and then demanding more money, and worse.

If at all possible, don't go out alone. Stay with the pack, if you're cut from the herd you're an easier target.

DO NOT leave your drink at the bar unattended. There have been reports of "roofies" (the "date rape" drug) finding their way into drinks.

Clinton, I've been waiting for info in regards women's self defense.  Your points are excellent!  Threat mitigation is equally as important as fighting.  I think we realize that as we get older.  Ever notice there aren't a great deal of OLD bar fighters?  They either out grow it, end up in jail or dead.

I keep telling my wife to pay attention to the things around us, having it written by an authority may get her attention.

@Old PH2 For the life of me, I can not understand or comprehend why my wife fails to dead bolt the exterior doors at night.  Or keep her cell phone plugged in and on the nightstand at night (rather than downstairs on her desk).  I do mean to call out my wife in particular, but, for the life of me I can't understand why most females don't take better inventory of their surroundings and implement even the most basic safeguards.  Perhaps it goes back to cave dweller DNA, where males were the hunters and protectors and the females were the healers and caretakers.

My wife thinks I'm paranoid to have old, no longer used or on a plan cell phones plugged in the AC outlet in various rooms around the house.  Yes, those old, no longer used cell phones are perfectly capable of calling 911.

I always am able to end any discussion with Dr. William Petit and his family.  The fear, torture and brutality Dr. Petit and his family suffered at the hands of two monsters should be enough to provoke every female into a self defense class.

@NMOne  @Tango9  @CJCJ  @Corps  @Old NMOne, you may recall the Lynyrd Skynyrd song with the lyrics "Give Me Three Steps Towards The Door". There was a guy named "Moose" in my unit who was apparently in a honky tonk talking to a gal when her "man" took offense and pulled a gun on him. Moose decided it best to live to fight another day and "Headed For The Door". But the billy bob dude got off a shot and plugged him in the ass before he got there. He never heard the end of the harassment he got for that escapade.

Can I add a female perspective here? Most of the time, people tend to marry our opposites...so, if you are security concious, etc...it stands to reason that she may be the opposite of that.  Secondly, (and while I don't agree with it)...some women are "conditioned" to let others care for them.  Think of all the disney movies where the prince rides in and saves the day.  While there may be movies that have a strong lead (like jolie pictured above), they are outnumbered by women being "saved".  Not going to get into philosophical reasons on that, just pointing out the reality of it. Also, there is considerable influence within the peer group.  Men are "rewarded" for being strong/protective/security and so forth.  For all of the title 9, feminist movement in the US, women are still "penalized"  (informally within other women) for showing an interest in the following: math, science, guns, etc.  Its okay drive a hybrid and do aerobics, but heaven forbid you know how to work on the car or lift weights!  (I learned early on to watch what I said around who I was around.  Fellow cheerleaders- nix the monty python jokes and math talk.  Guy friends?  Don't bother with fashion, etc... its like living in two different worlds, and you don't fit with either)  So your wife doesn't focus on security, because its not important to her peer group- like it is to yours.

Finally, there is normalcy basis.  Enough said about that.

Didn't mean to ramble, just that sometimes I feel like I need to "interpret" women for my guy friends...

 @momengineer

I think it’s a generational thing as well.   In my generation (and probably the next one), women were told not to fight back – particularly if we were being raped.  We were warned repeatedly that we could get hurt if we tried to fight the attacker and girls and not to make the attacker mad.  We were discouraged from tough-and-tumble play.  It’s as if we were raised to be victims.   My Dad had a different view of it – that I would get hurt either way, so don’t make it easy for the attacker.  He taught me not to fear the momentary pain from a hit and to use it to my advantage.  He taught me where to most effectively hit back.  He taught me to deal with what is instead of what might be.

It’s very different today.  My 9 year-old grand-daughter has already done a ‘stranger danger’ class, where she was taught a completely different mindset – run, fight, scream, hit, bite, gouge; do whatever it takes NOT to be tossed inside a car by a stranger.   And her parents encourage rough-and-tumble play with her brother and friends.   She won’t grow up feeling like a victim just waiting to be pounced on.

@Corps Hornet Driver  @Old PH2 My girlfriend grew up in a small town in the '60's and '70's where locking doors wasn't necessary (as far as her family was concerned) and where nothing bad ever happened. Getting her to change took time. It may be that your wives grew up in similar circumstances. Being married to ex military guys may only reinforce that already present sense of security. I like the old cell phone idea. I read about that a while back and had forgotten it. My doors are always locked. Security sweep is done before I leave and at sundown if I'm home. The additional part of the DNA aspect that "males were the hunters and protectors and the females were the healers and caretakers" is what I call the "nest feathering and nurturing" characteristic which may explain why new nick-nacks, baubles, trinkets, furniture, fabrics and paint continue to show up when the existing stuff in the "nest" is just fine.

    • In the IDF, 'Lonely Soldier' is a term that describes soldiers serving on active duty who have no family is Israel. These are volunteers that came to serve for 3-5 years. They typically go back to their respective countries upon completion. Most commonly, these are people who immigrated to Israel by themselves. I was one of them. While in Israel, I lived in an apartment building where the majority of people were lonely soldiers. It was located on the outer ring of Jerusalem, surrounded by four Arab villages. My roommates were two recon guys (like me) and one who worked in field intel. All of the other inhabitants were soldiers from various units, with most of them serving a combat role. It was a well known thing, especially to the Arabs in the village. Most of the time we wouldn't be there, but when we were on leave, we would come to the apartment for a little R&R. It was rare that the four of us were there at the same time, but once in a blue moon, it did happen. Each village had, as is customary, its own mosque. When the time for prayer came, the loudspeakers would call out to the faithful. It was OK, we were used to it. However, over the weekend they would make it a point to play the call to prayer very, and I mean VERY, loud. They knew soldiers would be in the building trying to get some sleep - recovering from several weeks in the field. This always annoyed me but there was nothing I could do. On this particular weekend, after an intense seven weeks of non-stop ops, all I wanted was to go to the apartment, sleep, eat, sleep some more and then sleep again. That weekend the four of us were at the apartment and we were all equally tired. We arrived Thursday night and after a small dinner and some beers, we went to sleep. At 0400 we all jumped.... The freaking loudspeakers at all four mosques began their call to prayer at full blast. Fuck.... We spent the remainder of the day trying to rest and every time we would fall asleep, again... The call for prayers, full blast! Over lunch, we all looked at each other and knew this had to stop. We came up with a plan. I know it wasn't nice, but at that point we couldn't care less about political correctness. Here's what we did. After some recon that night, we noticed that the call to prayer wasn't performed by an Imam or some other person with a microphone. It was a tape recorder that used a tape. We figured the four of us, experts in stealthy infils, could sneak in and steal those tapes. However, while we were planning the different infil routes for each village, we all smiled and did something better. We recorded Metallica's 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' on repeat on all four tapes and then waited till midnight. At midnight, each one of us - armed with a Metallica tape - headed to a different village. All dressed in black, we were careful not to be seen. We entered into the buildings and exchanged the tapes. We rallied back to the exfil point, a crossroad not far from the last village and headed back to our apartment. And then we waited... At 0350 we went to the roof with some coffee, opened some field chairs and waited for the show to begin. At 0400 sharp the first "call" came alive, full volume: Make his fight On the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside ... Take a look To the sky Just before you die It's the last time he will Followed by the next, then the 3rd and 4th joined in. Full volume Metallica! Soon after, we heard sirens headed to the villages. I don't know what happened after that, but we had our own private concert, right there. No kidding, there I was... Metallica call to prayer
