Spc. Devin James Kuhn, 24, was killed after a shot was heard on Camp Rilea in Oregon. He was on the way to the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria when he succumbed to his wounds. Right now, officials say that the shot was due to training, though the facts are still coming in and the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have officially released his name, which means the family has been notified.
It is important to realize in times like these, everything heard from “someone who knows someone who was there” or comparable, distant sources, are all conjecture. As usual, the investigation will be kept under wraps until it can be determined one way or the other what exactly happened. This is done in order to conduct a full and thorough investigation, to honor Spc. Kuhn and to show respect to his family. Rumors have done substantial damage in the past in terms of the families of those killed.
The Oregon National Guard often uses Camp Rilea for training events, and it is also used by the Ranger Regiment, Special Forces and other groups.
Spc. Kuhn was assigned to A Co., 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment out of Joint Base Lewis–McChord, WA. He is survived by his wife and parents and he was from Philadelphia. He had earned the National Defense Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, the Expert and Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab and passed RASP (Ranger Assessment and Selection Program), among other accomplishments. According to Fox 12 in Oregon, he had deployed to Afghanistan once in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
Training in the 75th Ranger Regiment is inherently dangerous, and deaths in training are not unheard of. Several have died from training jumps, among other causes. Again, the investigation is ongoing and SOFREP will keep you apprised of any developments as they come.
