In a statement on its website the USGS confirmed that a sonic boom took place near Hammonton in southern New Jersey at 1:24:05 p.m. ET.

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that a sonic boom occurred over New Jersey Thursday.
In a statement on its website the USGS confirmed that a sonic boom took place near Hammonton in southern New Jersey at 1:24:05 p.m. ET.
A sonic boom is the result of changes in air pressure that happen when an object, such as a supersonic jet, breaks the sound barrier.
Numerous social media users asked whether New Jersey was experiencing an earthquake Thursday, according to NJ.com. There were also reports of shaking from New Jersey to New York.
“Not an earthquake but a sonic boom in New Jersey,” tweeted USGS.
