The Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) announced yesterday that its counterterrorism forces, alongside U.S. commandos, conducted a major direct-action raid against ISIS that led to the death of key military commander Salman Abu Shabib al-Jebouri (also known as Abu Saif) and two of his aides. The raid occurred south of Mosul, in the town of Hammam al-Alil—a mere 42 miles from the Kurdish capital of Erbil, where U.S. and Kurdish special operators launched their assault.
Al-Jebouri, a member of the ISIS military council, had operational responsibility for southern Mosul and the Makhmour region in Iraq.
Although identified as “U.S. Special Forces” by the KRSC, the operation undoubtedly was undertaken by the Delta Force-led JSOC Expeditionary Targeting Force. The ETF’s 200-person special operations task force is reportedly comprised of a full Delta squadron, and is supported by numerous JSOC/intelligence community assets.
